Astros really showing their age

Seems like a lot of their problems are self inflicted. They have better younger options to close, but Dusty keeps marching out Pressly. Same with continuing to play Maldonado over Diaz.

Agree, I think it has to change now, Neris, Abreu much better options

yea and I don't get Diaz losing all this playing time - although Maldonado homered to day Diaz is a far superior hitter

If Oakland takes 1/3 from Seattle that’s probably the best we can hope for, but at least the Rangers and Astros lost.

Yeah still a very good night for the standings even being an offday

Wheeler handled the Braves last night

The NL Cy Young choice will be a tough one. Might be the most diffusely split vote in a long time.

I think if I'm voting I'd go Strider. His ERA is lagging some of the others by a bit, but likely leads the NL in wins and Ks, and his xFIP and xERA are both the best of all candidates.

It may help that Wheeler's ERA is only 0.10 points ahead of Strider (3.63 v. 3.73). Even Gallen is only at 3.50. I can't see it going to Steele, but he's the only contender with an ERA under 3. I wonder what the highest ERA of a Cy Young winner is. I have to think 3.73 would be near the top?

Snell is the ERA leader and he has way more Ks than Steele

Yeah - I only looked at the Top 5 leaders in WAR. I didn't think Snell was in the conversation. Still - there are only 3 SPers with an ERA under 3.31 in the NL this year.

I'm sure he'd love nothing more than one more shot in the post season and the Reds are close...

Gotta wonder if the Reds will bring Votto back on a 1 year deal. I have to think he's a great influence on that young team.

Seemed to want to come back, but also seemed unsure if he'd be able to. I don't think he'll play anywhere else. You'd have to think they'd be interested in having him as a pinch-hitter and 2-3 times a week starter at 1B/DH. The Pujols role last year in St. Louis.

Anyone else not realize that William Contreras is having a 5-win season? Oakland hilariously flipped him and elite setup and Joel Payamps for Esteury Ruiz. The Sean Murphy trade would have actually been alright if they didn't trade the man piece to Milwaukee for a 4th OF.

I have read the articles and can't find any actual quotes directly pointing towards Manny, but there's posts on dodgers reddit saying they are vindicated for letting him walk and the same implication on the padres reddit in another lengthy thread. Im sure its not as bad as his younger days but just turns out he is now lazy and doesn't want to show a good example for the younger players.

Is Reddit reliable information? Seems not....

Machado will likely require surgery on his ailing right elbow, and he could undergo the procedure before the campaign comes to a close, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Reading between the lines, I think he would go elsewhere if another team offers him a starting job. He specifically said the most important thing to him is playing.

I think he'll be back there, or on another contender next season, the fit is there in Cincy though.

I actually noticed this yesterday and was going to post about it. Oakland actually would have looked brilliant if they kept Contreras, who now makes a 1/16 of what Murphy makes and is under control until 2027. While Murphy is still a stud, this wasn't exactly a great trade for AA, especially when it seems pretty obvious that Contreras was a legit hitter. Looks like his defense has improved immensely.

Murphy has been bit of a weird fit. They have d'Arnaud, so he's only going to catch 100 games. That would be fine if they were getting his bat in the lineup on most of his off days, but they prefer Ozuna in the DH slot. Trading for Murphy and then not maximizing his value was an odd choice. I'm guessing Snitker didn't deploy him how AA wanted him to, and AA hasn't wanted to rock the boat.

Agreed, he sits far too often. The Brewers cleaned up in that trade.
