connorp Old-Timey Member Posted February 1, 2023 Posted February 1, 2023 Right…. This is baseball It just speaks to the challenges. People are like “baseball doesn’t market Mike Trout” etc but there really isn’t much of an appetite for it
glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 1, 2023 Posted February 1, 2023 He probably signed like a 12 year deal worth the same amount as 1yr for the average NBA player Ohtani might be an exception: The 28-year-old Japanese phenom is becoming a lightning rod for brands — both in the United States and in his native Japan. * In 2022, Ohtani reportedly made $20M off the field before taxes and agents’ fees, tripling his endorsement numbers from 2021 and serving as the highest mark in MLB in at least a decade, per Forbes. * He was on the covers of GQ, Sports Illustrated, and Time, as well as the video game “MLB: The Show” in the span of six months. * He had 17 different brand endorsements in 2022 — the most ever tracked by SponsorUnited. He also attracted 22 Japanese brands to advertise at Angels Stadium, the most of any MLB ballpark. Once he becomes a free agent and signs a $500m+ contract (assuming he stays healthy), his brand value is only going to grow, especially since it appears he's either going to be Steve Cohen's next piece of art or a Dodger, and those two competing with each other is only going to drive his price up. The only other NBA star with New Balance is Kawhi (I think), and while Kawhi is a big star in the NBA, he's not the household name that other NBA stars are (LeBron, Curry, KD, etc). Wouldn't shock me if Ohtani's deal with NB is close to Kawhi's, but I don't think the numbers are out yet.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted February 1, 2023 Posted February 1, 2023 Ohtani is the BTS of baseball (Korean boy band, not BJMB poster). His innocence, looks and charm will attract all the ladies. But he doesn't have the effeminate part of BTS (Korean band nor BJMB poster) which will still keep all the old school baseball fans on board. Finally, add in the odd, slightly OCD behaviour he has around baseball and training and that will attract all the young stat nerds and other weirdos that gravitate towards baseball. Ohtani is basically like Trevor Bauer except not ugly, not creepy (to our knowledge) and doesn't know enough English words to say something that will offend someone. Basically Ohtani is the perfect sponsorship icon and spokesman for the MLB. That's why he is getting this deal.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted February 1, 2023 Posted February 1, 2023 A lot of his money come from back home though I’d assume. It’s like Yao Ming. Guy was actually overall a disappointment due to injuries but one of the richest players from off the court stuff. Still is
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted February 3, 2023 Posted February 3, 2023 Come on, man. Really? I think it should be folded lol So you feel women don't deserve to play sports?
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted February 3, 2023 Posted February 3, 2023 So you feel women don't deserve to play sports? I, for one, am shocked by that unsurprising stance!
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted February 3, 2023 Posted February 3, 2023 Come on, man. Really? I think it should be folded lol Sexist much?
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted February 3, 2023 Posted February 3, 2023 Sexist much? It’s subsidized. I usually I take issue with with subsidized stuff I’m not one to take issue with what people want. If the Pro Curling circuit makes money, more power to it. I won’t be watching

Laika Community Moderator Posted February 3, 2023 Posted February 3, 2023 too much for Zack but happy for him Royals paying a lot for a mascot to pitch some innings haha inb4 "I'd take him over Kikuchi" yeah we know we all f***ing would, shut the f*** up

If he repeats he earns every bit. Gibson got 10M, and Greinke > Gibson

The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted February 3, 2023 Posted February 3, 2023 Yeah it's fine 1 war projection and being paid for that much production I think he out performs that. He’s better IRL than fantasy. He seems to have learned how to pitch while throwing 89.
Captain_Obvious Verified Member Posted February 4, 2023 Posted February 4, 2023 What did the Orioles get out of promoting Rutschman in May? I cannot find a single non-tangible benefit and a couple of major negative outcomes: 1- Lose 1 year of Rutschman control 2- Go down a few slots in the draft If non-competitive teams believe their prospects have a good shot at being Rookie of the Year, then they should add them to opening day roster or wait until July at the earliest to promote them. Promoting good prospects between April and June when the team is not competitive is just counter-productive.

He was on the opening day roster if not hurt so they just put him on the team when healthy

connorp Old-Timey Member Posted February 4, 2023 Posted February 4, 2023 Wasn't he injured? Yeah and I’m not looking, but I don’t think he was setting the minors on fire. So it was a rehab more than anything
Captain_Obvious Verified Member Posted February 4, 2023 Posted February 4, 2023 Wasn't he injured? I don't think that matters. You do not get the high draft pick if he is not on opening day roster yet you still lose the year of control if he finishes top 2 in RotY. Noncompetitive teams are better off waiting until July or later to promote good prospects if said prospects start the year in the minors. It is in the team's interest to minimize their players' chances of winning RotY in this scenario.

Hopefully for the sake of baseball and it’s fans, last years sss continues to be the case, and teams get away from that philosophy
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted February 4, 2023 Posted February 4, 2023 Hopefully for the sake of baseball and it’s fans, last years sss continues to be the case, and teams get away from that philosophy It's not so much a "philosophy" as it is a "calculated business decision" (for the non-stupid teams anyway...)
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted February 4, 2023 Posted February 4, 2023 It's not so much a "philosophy" as it is a "calculated business decision" (for the non-stupid teams anyway...) Yet teams started to get away from it. Clearly. Could’ve been something discussed that’s not spelled out in the CBA. So why not root for that instead of getting joy from knowing how smart you are, and how stupid teams are.
