Laika Community Moderator Posted January 6, 2023 Posted January 6, 2023 But in many cases, the roster spot is available for a few weeks and then he's packing his bag to move somewhere else for another few weeks or months. Why can't they give teams the ability to give him compensation to avoid that BS and stay with that organization, full well knowing he's a fringe guy who may go back and fourth between AAA and the majors as needed? You can do that sort of it just works differently Like you can try to send them down and it’s up to the player to accept or refuse the assignment I don’t know the exact mechanics but the player basically gets a choice, in context. I think that’s good. A guy like Diaz would likely not even sign a two way deal because he wants to play in the big leagues Very few fringe guys are at the stage of their career where they would admit they are a AAAA player. Only the oldest veterans like Casey Lawrence for example

If someone is making $700K (or whatever the league minimum is) and you're going to give them $2M extra that year to accept assignments to the minors when needed - wouldn't players consider that? Wouldn't that be f***ing ideal for Mitch White?

Wouldn't that be f***ing ideal for Mitch White? No, it would be really stupid. He's trying to establish himself as a major league starting pitcher. The upshot of accomplishing that is tens of millions of dollars. I don't think most MLB teams have spare millions to do this anyway. They run pretty tight on their budgets. Sure, the huge market teams would do it.

I sure think the Jays would love to give White a million or two to have the ability to option White to AAA whenever they want this year without losing him. I guess in White's case he's still chasing the dream of being the next Ross Stripling, but at some point they come to the realization that they are legit AAAA players and jumping from team to team must blow goats.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted January 6, 2023 Author Posted January 6, 2023 Anyone lese thinknig thelonger it takes the Dodgers to annoucen anything related to Bauer, the more likely they might actually keep him?

Deadline for decision is today, probably late afternoon pacific time zone. I am sure they are working the phones on a trade and this will continue right up to the decision deadline. If no taker, they release him.

I bet it’s no big deal for most after the shock of the first couple events Most of them make a permanent home in Florida or Texas or Arizona anyway and they live out of a rental or hotel all season It’s not like going between say Buffalo and Toronto all year is much more fun
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted January 6, 2023 Posted January 6, 2023 For the AAAA bubble guys, it's kinda like a gig economy. A relatively high paying one, though. Not like those Uber drivers.

One of the major newpapers down there did a poll, got nearly 20,000 fan reponses and it was 51% to 49% in favour of the Dodgers keeping him. I wouldnt have expected so many people to actually do a poll like that let alone turn out in Bauers favour.l

There's so much wrong with your statement I'm not sure where to begin. Of the 12+ million people in the greater LA area, putting up an online poll for anyone to answer is pretty much the definition of random

Yes, i agree with that general idea, but when youre polling about a specific sport and a player with a certain team.... why would i care about people's opinions that probably dont even follow baseball? Like, lets say for example I was the Dodgers and wanted to get a feel for the general feeling around LA baseball fans about Bauer, I wouldnt care if I mailed a survery out to a specific % of every demographic, I would only care about the baseball fan demographic.
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 6, 2023 Posted January 6, 2023 PLease elaborate Trevor Bauers hot agent probably paid a warehouse of Chinese preteens to spam the poll

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2023 Posted January 7, 2023 PLease elaborate They can’t compute that people don’t actually care about high level wokeness
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2023 Author Posted January 7, 2023 Trevor Bauers hot agent probably paid a warehouse of Chinese preteens to spam the poll Paid? Highly unlikely for Chinese preteens. That would take them away from the Nike factory.

Ray Verified Member Posted January 7, 2023 Posted January 7, 2023 Bauer will probably end up getting signed partway through the season (unfortunately), but there’s no team that’s going to touch him right now.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 7, 2023 Posted January 7, 2023 Bauer will probably end up getting signed partway through the season (unfortunately), but there’s no team that’s going to touch him right now. Dodgers probably offered to pay bulk of his salary to trade him with no takers
BTS Community Moderator Posted January 7, 2023 Posted January 7, 2023 So no team was even willing to give the Dodgers even 1-2M of relief. This doesn’t bode well for him finding a job this season.
Ray Verified Member Posted January 7, 2023 Posted January 7, 2023 So no team was even willing to give the Dodgers even 1-2M of relief. This doesn’t bode well for him finding a job this season. Dodgers could’ve eaten his entire salary minus the league min, and yet no team thought of giving up a PTBNL or a Rk-league nothing prospect for him just to guarantee they get him. Like yeah they could get him in Free Agency technically, but the pro-Bauer argument hinges on the fact that his talent level is worth the publicity headache and league min, so why risk him courting other offers if he’s capable of giving you top of the rotation production? Doesn’t bode well.
