jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2022 Posted October 12, 2022 Yeah just off the top of my head, he had a rough end to the season. Same with Mayza. Unfortunately seems most of our bullpen was struggling towards the end and ultimately that’s what sunk us. Just try to add another arm or two and hope the bullpen is better next year. And we desperately need innings from the back end of the rotation to keep the BP fresh. All those Mitch White starts in the last couple weeks might have f***ed us At the end of the day, both Bass and Pop weren't really significant improvements down the stretch this season. At the trade deadline, you want your acquisitions to make a difference and both Bass & Pop didn't really have much of an impact. I still like the deal however and think long term Pop is definitely a nice guy to have around. Even Bass is great value on a 3M team option for 2023. I don't want him used as an 8th inning guy though. Mayza wasn't really that solid when you look at the advanced stats. Easy to upgrade over him. The Jays need another lefty like Brett Cecil or Scott Downs. Matt Moore IMO would be a perfect fit and a nice upgrade over Mayza. Either way Mayza is still an okay piece to keep around if he finds his 2021 form in 2023. It's important for the Jays starters to pitch deeper into games next year to keep the bullpen fresh. Gausman, Manoah and Berrios should be fine. Lets hope some arms at the back end of the rotation can provide some solid innings unlike White and Kikuchi. Even as much as I loved Strip, you can never rely on him going three times through an order. Always was given a quick hook.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2022 Posted October 12, 2022 Pearson best utilized in a swingman role. Primarly out of the bullpen, but not closing the book on him as an SP. Stripling was swingman at start of 2022, became one of the best SP. This is the ideal outcome for Pearson.

Send him to the bullpen and stop thinking about using him as a starter. Can’t rely on the dude to stay healthy
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2022 Posted October 12, 2022 I remember his fastball getting at 100+ mph but was pretty flat without much movement. Brandon League? He had a f***ton of movement on his fastball. It was a super sinker, but never induced the swing and miss you would have expected.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2022 Posted October 12, 2022 Agree with everything you said. Gausman, Manoah, and Berrios are locked in the rotation for sure. I prefer having Kikuchi and White stretched out and keep them around for depth purposes if someone goes down with an injury. Same with Tiedemann. There are a lot of decent solid mid-rotation starters available via free agency, and like you said could probably be acquired on a one-year deal. As well, could always acquire a SP by trading Jansen. Though for sure, I think the Blue Jays need to acquire two starters. As for the bullpen, I've been saying this most of the season, they need one more elite late inning bullpen arm to pair with Romano. Some lotto tickets like Shelby Miller wouldn't hurt as well and I would move Pearson to the BP full time. This is like the 5th time you've mentioned Shelby Miller in the past couple of days. Is he your brother or something? He threw 4 innings this year (yes with great results), but he hasn't pitched well (or much) since 2015 man. These are the types of lottery tickets that could pay off and I'm all for bringing him in as a non-roster invite to spring training, but there's no way you give that man a guaranteed contract...
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2022 Posted October 12, 2022 Yeah right now with just Manoah, Gausman and Berrios set in the rotation we really need two starting pitchers. I think White and Kikuchi should stretch out in spring training but ultimately start in the bullpen and then can move to SP roles if needed. Lucky for the Jays there is a ton of older pitchers who will be looking at short term deals this offseason. We could also look to acquire one by trading Jansen. As for the bullpen I think we really only need one decent late inning guy and then some lotto tickets. The more I think of it, the more I like the idea of Moreno for Thomas + one of Arizona's young, ready starters. Fills 2 needs, while we remain stacked at C with Jano/Kirk.

Haha. As a former Shelby Miller owner in fantasy baseball, he still holds a special place in my heart. Though on a serious note, he definitely is a lottery ticket that could pay off in a huge way. Bring him on a minor league deal with an opportunity to opt out if he doesn't make the MLB roster after ST.

The Iceman Verified Member Posted October 21, 2022 Posted October 21, 2022 Shelby Miller LOL. Fire the GM that signs him expecting MLB calibre innings at 32 years old. 10.69 8.59 9.24 6.43 His last 4 season era, although he is trending better I guess.

I know its a very small sample size, but he was pretty impressive out of the pen during his short stint with the Giants in September. 18.00 K/9, 0.40 FIP, 1.67 xFIP and 0.4 WAR in 7 innings. Included a 7 strikeout performance in 2.2 innings. Worth a minor league deal.

I think he'll probably get a guaranteed contract somewhere though.

I don’t like to put longtime/active posters on ignore, because I believe its good to have discourse and generally everyone here is pretty intelligent or at least more intelligent than the usual sports forum people in reddit and such. But you’re such an insufferable f***ing douchebag that you’re going on ignore. Idk what happened with you, like you do have good baseball knowledge you’re just choosing to be a contrarian and pick fights with people for trying to be a little bit positive or optimistic. Kindly go f*** yourself and enjoy your sad miserable life.
BTS Community Moderator Posted August 15, 2023 Author Posted August 15, 2023 It's weird seeing Stangstag get mad. Next up Gsnarls is going to start throwing haymakers.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 15, 2023 Posted August 15, 2023 No. I wouldn't fire Atkins.

Don't get all pissy because I called your bluff!
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2023 Posted August 15, 2023 Silvio's unhinged, lmao. I've never been unhinged all these years Jay, you know that. But not going to let whiny posters like Brownie19 or Stangstag get away with their BS!

He gets triggered easily when you offer constructive criticism of this team. He needs to realize things aren't all sunshine and rainbows when it comes to Atkins and the front office!
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2023 Posted August 15, 2023 The guy is coming off a 92 win season?????? I thought we had a consensus on this board that the playoffs are random. Has Reddit users taken over this forum these days? Hahaha... gold. After this post, Hurl wins.

You're always looking for any post I make to quote one certain part of it and paint me as someone who 100% hates Atkins and this FO, if I just make one criticism. You really need help because it's like you're out 24/7 scanning this message board looking to defend Atkins and this FO. Like I said, I'm done arguing back and forth with you about Atkins and this front office. You can't even offer any criticism without you getting triggered. This front office has done a tremendous job at fielding a competitive team year in and out (which I've said numerous times), though THUS FAR the team hasn't taken it to the next level. Let's see how 2023 goes if they make the Postseason and in 2024/2025 and then my judgement can change.
