Vlad two years ago had a hole in his swing up and in. He was far and couldn't turn on it and he'd ground them like 80% of the time.

 

Now he has a huge hole down and away and the league just pounds it continuously. He can't lay off that spot often enough and he doesn't make contact enough either. Hmmm

 

He is chasing more then he did last year. I thought he walked more then strike out in the minor? He is more of a free swinger this year I think or I am imagining it.

There's no in-between with this guy. He's either really good, or really bad. Basically what the Mariner fans said he was..lol. I think it's more mental than anything with him. It is what it is. He's fine for a 5th starter, but we overpaid for him.

So after looking into Vlad's swing % and pitch% by zones...looks like he missed a greater % of down and away pitches last season 68% vs 57% this year and there is a 5% pitch increase to that zone this year.

 

I think its an approach thing. Stop swinging at the pitches and then take the walk like the last month

Yeah he looked f***ing awful in his final AB today, swung at 2 pitches down and away out of the zone by like 6 inches. Gotta spit on that garbage

He’ll adjust. Recently teams have really been pounding him with breaking balls away and he will start to lay off them completely. I think he just sometimes gets stuck in “I need to be the one to get the hit” and tries to hit everything.
