Yeah it would be a safe bet for him to extend while he's hot and healthy. Getting hurt again could cost him.

That’s just it. Definitely depends on his appetite for testing FA but if he likes Toronto it might be doable

As Danny's mom, I can confidently say that the Blue Jays wasted their opportunity to extend my son at a reasonable rate two years ago. My son will become filthy rich after this season.

f*** Danny Jansen. I hate that guy. Science has not advanced enough to make glasses thick enough to fix his eyesight.

Weird way for a mother to talk about her son though unless her name is Margaret

this is the default for any pending FA, the team will have to do a pretty good sales job to retain the player, eg. Judge and I believe LeMahieu

How much money did Judge turn down from San Francisco before going back to the Yankees?

You would need to follow my arguments with Terminator from the beginning to get it.

rumored $360M then rumored (falsely) he signed with the Giants

Zaidi kinda pulled a Freidman - taking it way further though and slashing payroll in preparation for big FA spending. Didn't quite work out as planned

Never got not extending this guy, can still be done, still think he'd take 4/40 to stick around in Toronto. Should be offered yesterday, though. Puzzling.

My guess is yesterday's price is not today's price. They really should have extended him a while ago, especially if they were willing to trade Moreno. Hopefully they bring him back even if they have to pay market value. They have nothing in the upper minors as far as catching prospects, and Kirk is a backup at best at this rate. They need him, especially since they will avoid a rebuild like the plague, so might as well keep good players in that case.

Mind boggling to me this FO signed Grichuk to a 5/52 extension in 2019 but we are even having this debate about Jano, especially after they traded Moreno.

Agreed. If they are prepared to let Jansen go, then I'm even more confused about the team's direction than I was before. Once Moreno was traded, a Jansen extension should have happened within 12 months. Either he wants to test free agency, which is possible, or the Jays don't want to commit until he proves he can stay healthy, which I guess would be reasonable, but if you want a "sustainable contender" then you can't be paying market value on the players you extend. At some point you need some below market extensions early to maximize flexibility and value.

This might be a moot point a month from now if the Jays are out of it, as they'd probably trade him at that point, although he'd be a QO candidate if he stays healthy all season (not that extra picks are that appealing with this FO making the picks but still).

Teams that are trying to win don't let go of guys that can catch and hit. Like, never. There pretty much isn't a scenario where Jano shouldn't be re-signed. There's no chance of a scorched earth rebuild, and he should be kept through a retool.

To be fair - they probably expected Kirk to be the catcher of the future when they traded Moreno. At that point, I don't think it was obvious that Jansen was developing into a legit bat that should be DHing in most games he doesn't catch (even though he was great with that bat in 2022). I'm not sure they wanted to give Jansen a 4 year / $60M deal when Kirk was coming off a 129 wRC+, 4.3 WAR all-star season. You wouldn't want to be paying Jansen that to catch 3 days a week.

Is Ownership going to let Atkins make long term decisions that could hamstring the future of the team when he's nearing the end of the plank?

I'm also not sure extending him at his all-time high is such a great idea - but as was mentioned, perhaps he'd jump at the idea, given how injury prone he's been. Let's not forget that big beautiful bastard is made of annealed glass.

Yeah, Jansen since 2021 has a 128 wRC+ and 7.5 WAR in 832 plate appearances (235 games). It's unfortunate he hasn't been able to stay healthy because when he is healthy, he's an excellent player. With Kirk turning into a pumpkin, which the club probably did not anticipate a year ago, maybe they'll be more eager to extend Jansen now. If the team goes south then there's also the trade route, but as mentioned they won't be rebuilding, so it likely makes more sense to work out a long term deal with him. If he has the type of season he's capable of when healthy, then my guess is the AAV is going to be around $15m or so, give or take, but depends on the market. I think the days of him accepting 4/40 or something along those lines have passed.

It’s crazy how he’s far and away the best player on the roster right now.

What a time for him to have a career year.

I've shared before that Jano spent 2 days (on his own time and dime) in Calgary coaching my kid and 6 others in January of 2019. Everyone spent lots of time talking to him - very open and engaging. You will seriously never meet a nicer person. He shared with us the influence Luke Maile had on him for his D.

At that time he was struggling to hit after being having bat first rep as C in the Minors. I remember most of us including myself were ragging on him and it was either SaskJayFan or Brownie19 posted about the need for patience with him. I remember this post because the group think and CW at the time was so opposite. Just goes to show how baseball evolves. Back in '19 I remember speaking to him thinking to myself I just don't know if this guy is gonna stick.

And here we are in 2024....and its awesome to see what he has become. I hope they get a reasonable 3/4 year deal done. He is a good bet and investment.

I remember this story. Very cool. If I remember correctly, he said Luke Maile was much more influential to him than Russ Martin (when we all thought Russ would be this amazing mentor). Catching at the big league level is hard and most catchers are taught to lock down the defensive side first and the bat will catch up. I think that gives some hope that despite his early success, Kirk shouldn't be written off offensively.

Similarly, I do think Gabby Moreno will eventually hit. I think this was said at the time of the trade though - that by the time that happens, it may be past the Jays contention window (and close to when he's approaching free agency). So far, that's held true.
