G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted May 3, 2022 Posted May 3, 2022 Tapia vs Grichuk is probably barely a 1 WAR difference at the end of the season. Its not a big deal The big deal is that Teoscar is out And neither Tapia or Grichuk would be great options extended periods of time
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2022 Posted May 3, 2022 Actually it does. You gonna take a shot at explaining how to someone who probably thinks rbis and pitcher wins are relevant? Good luck bro.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2022 Posted May 3, 2022 GO JAYS GO! Have to PVR... GO LEAFS GO!!! Leafs Won!!!
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2022 Posted May 3, 2022 Holy f*** at all of you, lol. Pathetic.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2022 Posted May 3, 2022 Dan and Joe kind of really good play by play. They're excellent.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2022 Posted May 3, 2022 Well that's strange. I'd love to see an explanation of that one. It's where the ball is hit vs probability.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2022 Posted May 3, 2022 I wasn't, and btw he's hitting .343 with 1 HR at home and .333 with 2 HRs on the road in about the same number of at bats home/away. Not to mention everyone keeps talking about how he K's so much mile high air wouldn't help that issue.. Small samples, man. Meaningless.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2022 Posted May 3, 2022 Holy f***, everyone needs to relax. The season is 24 games old combined with the toughest schedule and key injuries and we're still 15-9. Come back at the end of May and start talking.

I think the Kirk and Bo slumps and mediocre offense, combined with deadball which it makes it look even worse is just playing with people's minds. Kind of.. What if these guys aren't as good as we thought? Yeah, come back at end of May and worry if the trends are longer.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2022 Posted May 3, 2022 Dan and Joe called the game last night? What a terrible night for me to miss the game. I've always thought they'd make a great team.

RBIs are probably one of most relevant things in baseball amigo. If Jays hit better with RISP there would be a big swing in the W-L record. But since that kind of thing isn’t quantifiable in a WAR formula, it’s just dumb. Just because it’s not a “skill” doesn’t mean it’s not one of the most important things in the game. So if you have a hot bat that’s coming through, you can’t ignore that impact simply because there’s no real way to quantify the difference it makes

Someone with a lot of RsBI had a lot of other people on his team who did a thing.

Protection is very important. Why not 2 birds with one stone? Get an RBI guy protector. I would trade for Jose Abreu -- he is worth about 3 WAR using the so-called advanced stats, but when you factor in the importance of RBIs and protection he would be 10 WAR. Here is how it works. Vladdy is returning to 2020 Vladdy, a 3 WAR .270 hitter... however as people have pointed out Vladdy doesn't have protection. Thus they don't pitch to him and he hits .270 .340 .500. However if he had protection they would pitch to him... thus he would hit .320 .420 .600. Now, think of it. With Abreu behind him, Vladdy's War probably doubles (he is being pitched to), they are so scared of Abreu, they will pitch to Vladdy, increasing his on base percentage so he's on base for Abreu, and Abreau would get 140 rbis. Valddy - goes form 3 WAR to 6 WAR with Abreu because they pitch to him and increase his on base Abreu - has Vladdy on base and gets 140 rbis RBIs are very important and add 3 more extra wins.

connorp Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2022 Posted May 3, 2022 Mock all you want but basic logic is that if you replace a sub .600 OPS bat with a .900+ one in a key lineup spot, you’ll have more RBIs, which is turn changes the course of games

You can’t use WAR to quantity the impact of putting a black hole in a run producing spot vs a .900 OPS bat. Grichuk trade sucked when the ink dried. Yes, even if RG was on a massive heater with us right now, we know at some point he’d go through a longer stretch of being a black hole. In a perfect world you could hide him on the bench as much as possible when that happens. But he also could be huge in this short term with these close losses. Tapia/Zimmer is just always a black hole. They can run into a big hit some random day just like Cavan Smallgio could, but doesn’t change fact they’re a DFA candidate every day of the season. But good thing we saved $5m so Rogers P&L gets a small boost

WAR doesnt need to quantify what it means to have a stuggling hitter where a .900 OPS hitter should be. That's not what it's for. If you want to attack something, you should probably have a basic idea of what that thing is. Otherwise you just look foolish.

I’m not the one dropping Grichuk/Tapia WAR numbers like it’s the be-all-end-all of the debate. I respect what WAR is and what’s it’s purpose is, but I’m aware of it’s limitations in applications. Not convinced most people can say the same
