Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 11, 2022 Posted April 11, 2022 This is a legitimate concern. The bench right now, assuming Espinal is starting at 2B, is two OF's who can't hit, a backup catcher who can't catch or hit, and then Biggio who is versatile but only really playable at 2B. Bench depth is fairly easy to get at the deadline, so I'm not really stressing that, but Charlie with Tapia, Collins, and Zimmer at his disposal is terrifying. lol
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted April 11, 2022 Posted April 11, 2022 I was going to say a WTF to Collins, until I saw this thread. The offensive downgrade from Jansen or Biggio to Collins isn't THAT much, and there is at least good reason to keep them out. You want to give Jansen the full day off after the heavy workload he took with 10,000 pitchers this weekend and Biggio off the bench gives you some options later in the game as opposed to have him in the DH spot. What you guys are really whining about is Collins being on the team in the first place. Which isn't on Montoyo. He's working with what he's got.
InsideThePark Verified Member Posted April 11, 2022 Posted April 11, 2022 Legitimately there should be a 10 man rotation, which Biggio playing some corner OF, and 1B, and Espinal playing some SS/3B when guys need half days off to DH. Then Tapia, Zimmer, or Collins should be starting like 1 game per week combined, mostly Zimmer when Springer needs to DH. I can forgive them for putting Tapia in there once, and Collins in there just to get them action early but this shouldn't be a recurring thing where Tapia/Zimmer starts half the games and Collins 1 quarter. They're bench players for a reason. We have a clearly significantly better top 10 players. 1 extra to rotate is good. Putting another clearly inferior player in there is now sitting 2 much better players. Guys don't need that kind of time off.
InsideThePark Verified Member Posted April 11, 2022 Posted April 11, 2022 and most of my whining has been for nothing If Jansen isn't an option for tonight, and Collins still DH's then the argument they need Collins on the roster to DH Kirk goes out the window though

Collins being in over Biggio, when we've just seen Tapia start twice in the OF... is. That's far from optimal. It's doubly dumb now that we know Jansen has mild soreness. Now, you're left with a lower floor lineup and your backup catcher at DH. If Kirk get's beaned, youre left with losing the DH spot, or putting in a guy you didn't want to be in there due to soreness. THe obvious counter there is, maybe it's not a big deal and jansen would be fine to come in if Kirk get's hurt. Well, maybe, but as your catcher, if you're hurt enough they dont want you starting, they obviously wouldnt want you coming in in case of injury to the other catcher either. This is exactly the scenario whereyour 3rd catcher should be sitting out as a backup and not starting at DH.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted April 11, 2022 Posted April 11, 2022 True, gotta think Montoyo would at least DH Jansen since he's smashing the ball right now. The whole Collins trade was a head-scratcher in the first place. I could see the FO wanting him to have play time Why do you say that? Just because we already have Moreno has catching depth at AAA?
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted April 11, 2022 Posted April 11, 2022 Of course, all this bitching we are doing about Collins means 100% he's going to have a JP Arencibia debut kind of night
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted April 11, 2022 Posted April 11, 2022 Way too much bitching about Collins playing over Biggio. There’s barely a downgrade there. When Panik was DH and batting 6th, now that was worth bitching about.

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted April 11, 2022 Posted April 11, 2022 Collins? Really? This s*** drives me nuts. Is Biggio hurt again or something? We have to try to get him going before we give him another day off. A parade of s***** LHH's isnt going to help us.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 11, 2022 Posted April 11, 2022 I have 0 ill feelings towards Montoyo at this point. I'm perfectly fine with him as the manager and I actually think he's pretty wholesome and a nice personality to keep around the team. I am 100% certain that these lineup and roster decisions are being mandated by Shatkins. I'm sure I'll still get annoyed by Montoyo's micro-decisions like when he pulls a guy early or how often he leaves them in too long but that's the case with every manager in the league. That being said, I no longer believe he's behind calls like which relievers to use in certain situations and which guys to start in the lineup. There's no way he's doing this stuff on his own against the wishes of the FO and they're still keeping him around. The only way it makes sense is if they're making those calls themselves. Collins? Really? This s*** drives me nuts. Is Biggio hurt again or something? We have to try to get him going before we give him another day off. A parade of s***** LHH's isnt going to help us. I feel this is it.
slips96 Verified Member Posted April 11, 2022 Posted April 11, 2022 I think the lineup is a few things with Collins getting the nod. 1.) Trying to get everyone some AB's early in the year. 2.) Message to Biggio that he better get his s*** together sooner rather than later.

TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted April 11, 2022 Author Posted April 11, 2022 Who the f*** is Tyler Heineman? Also lol at Josh Palacios catching the most random of strays.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted April 11, 2022 Author Posted April 11, 2022 This team has an obsession with having three active catchers. Just for a 10-day Danny Jansen DL stint, they gave up Palacios, lmao. Despite having Collins and Kirk already on the roster and Moreno conceivably coming up eventually.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 11, 2022 Posted April 11, 2022 Jansen's on the IL... explains the line-up sorta.

Yeah this seems really stupid unless they don't think Collins can catch at all...otherwise just start Biggio and have Collins as the backup catcher - keep Palacios
bzapple Verified Member Posted April 11, 2022 Posted April 11, 2022 Definitely seems like the FO doesn't see Collins as a catcher at all, more of Greg Bird type of lefty power bat. He rates pretty horribly on defense but for whatever reason they're interested in his bat. I doubt we see him start any games at catcher.
DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted April 11, 2022 Posted April 11, 2022 Need the starters to get it going.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted April 11, 2022 Posted April 11, 2022 The decision to trade McGuire is really hurting now. I really don’t think Kirk can catch Everyday and the guy we got isn’t exactly known for his glove.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted April 11, 2022 Posted April 11, 2022 Collins will be ok. Calm down boys
