Zack Collins is the DH tonight.

Honestly, if the Jays only had Conforto available for road games, the team would probably still be better off. Tapia, Collins, and Zimmer are going to get way too many AB's even when everyone is healthy.

Jansen has been hitting the tits out the ball would have preferred if they continued to ride the hot stick. I get the short porch and Collins a Lefty thing. But him on this roster is confusing to begin with.

Are we really serious with this s***?? Holy f***.

Biggio and Jansen are better DH options. That isn't even taking into account the fact that they could give someone a rest day at DH and have upgraded defense elsewhere (Bichette DH, Espy at SS... or Zimmer CF, Springer RF, Teo DH)

Really hope this DH shuffling doesnt get out of hand. Already seen Tapia get more starts than he should get over 3 weeks and now Collins in there. Kirk and Jansen should both be in the lineup every day with one as the DH, expecially with a 3rd catcher around to be the emergency fill in if the starter gets hurt and you dont want to lose the DH spot.

I would move Chapman up a slot or two also, though that's not much more than hair splitting. He's just too good to be in 7th behind Gurriel and Kirk.

Yet Montoyo lovers will defend him no matter what.

Yeah they could have put Hernandez or Gurriel at DH and used Biggio in the OF. Or had Jansen catch and Kirk DH.

Not putting out your best lineup when everyone is healthy against a division rival is ridiculous.

Don't mind Tapia starting once in a while to give the OF some rest, but Collins at DH is a f***ing joke this early on.

I have 0 ill feelings towards Montoyo at this point. I'm perfectly fine with him as the manager and I actually think he's pretty wholesome and a nice personality to keep around the team.

I am 100% certain that these lineup and roster decisions are being mandated by Shatkins.

I'm sure I'll still get annoyed by Montoyo's micro-decisions like when he pulls a guy early or how often he leaves them in too long but that's the case with every manager in the league. That being said, I no longer believe he's behind calls like which relievers to use in certain situations and which guys to start in the lineup. There's no way he's doing this stuff on his own against the wishes of the FO and they're still keeping him around. The only way it makes sense is if they're making those calls themselves.

This is the concern with the expanded roster. You give Charlie extra players he will make sure he plays them. He still manages this team like AAA roster getting everyone at-bats.

I’m shocked Collins is rostered. And I honestly thought Tapia was gone when we got Zimmer to be the 4th OF. Like just eat that money. He was just sent to offset Grichuk money. Hopefully some quality depth will be added before the deadline. Or prospects will push their way into Major League roles.

even Biggio as a DH would be preferable. Dude still projects to be league average. The floor of the lineup drops so much with guys like Collins, Tapia etc getting starts over Biggio.

True, gotta think Montoyo would at least DH Jansen since he's smashing the ball right now. The whole Collins trade was a head-scratcher in the first place. I could see the FO wanting him to have play time

This is a legitimate concern. The bench right now, assuming Espinal is starting at 2B, is two OF's who can't hit, a backup catcher who can't catch or hit, and then Biggio who is versatile but only really playable at 2B. Bench depth is fairly easy to get at the deadline, so I'm not really stressing that, but Charlie with Tapia, Collins, and Zimmer at his disposal is terrifying.

Collins DHing today would make decent sense if we hadnt just sat through 2 games of Tapia getting starts in the OF.

Like, with what a normal person would do with this lineup, 1 game out of 4 with Collins as a DH is at least defensible. It's not defensible when your better hitters are getting the same amount of starts as the scrubs. Biggio not playing today (barring an injury we don't know about) makes no sense.

The FO deserves 100% of the credit when they do good things and they deserve 100% of the blame when they do stupid s***. They brought in Collins, a guy who is clearly a defective bat, and decided to roster him at the major league level instead of trying to develop him at AAA. Even when they brought in Zimmer, they sent Katoh down instead of Collins. That tells you they want to play him. You don't go out of your way to roster three catchers if you don't want that third guy getting play.

Stuff like this is retroactively cleansing the hate I had for Montoyo over things like playing Joe Panik too much. I don't believe there's a chance in hell he was playing Panik against the FO's wishes. I think the FO had him played as long as they could until they realized he was a pumpkin and then they traded him away. Hopefully they're right about whatever they see in guys like Collins, Tapia and Zimmer because, from a distance, that looks like a f***ton of bad plate appearances to give to projects in an all-in contention year before you get to the Joe Panik point of cutting them loose.

The bench is fine-ish if it's used properly. Neither Tapia (nor Zimmer had he been here) should be starting 2 games out of the 1st 3 in the OF. They should be the pinch runners you put in late in games when you need to gamble, then done for the day. There's almost no scenario on this team where putting them in to pinch hit for any other hitter makes sense, even though they hit left handed.

I just looked up some stats and Tapia has received twice the plate appearances of Biggio at this point. Biggio is seemingly part of a strict platoon but Tapia gets starts in the outfield and plays the entire game. Just more examples of Charlie being Charlie I guess.

I figured they might want to get Collins into a game early, and might have done so by giving Vladdy a DH day and starting Collins at first. But after 2 days of Tapia, and Jansen now only getting 2 of the first 4 games after hitting 2 HR and being the best hitter is starting to get to me.Only 158 game of this s*** left I guess.

1 day of Tapia, 1 day of Collins I could get behind just to get them action early. But both Kirk and Jansen need to be playing 3 out of every 4 days. Tapia/Zimmer/Collins when they get in there also need to be hitting 9th

I'd also like to see Collins play before committing to s*** on the guy. Maybe they like what they saw in practice or maybe htey think he already worked out some of his issues over the offseason.

Like I said when they made the trade, the raw tools are incredibly promising. His exit velocities are significantly better than even Anabolic Espinal so far. And his minors numbers were always top-notch.

He's an adjustment away from being a really good hitter.
