Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2022 Posted March 12, 2022 Someone tell me how to think about this?
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2022 Posted March 12, 2022 I would say this would be a great minor league signing. A bit of a head scratcher to grant a 28 yo with three cups of coffee at the MLB level under his belt an MLB deal. They must really like his stuff. MiLB numbers show high K and high BB rates.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2022 Author Posted March 12, 2022 I agree that my first reaction to this was "I'm really surprised this isn't a minor league signing." I have no idea why you would commit a major league roster spot to a guy like Vasquez this early in the market. I guess you could still release him if he sucks in camp.
43211234 Verified Member Posted March 12, 2022 Posted March 12, 2022 lol I trust the front office so I'm fine with this. A microcosm of modern front offices: - 6 career innings - ERA over 8 in those innings - throws 90% sliders - turning 29 this year Gets a major league contract.
King Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2022 Posted March 12, 2022 There's no reason to be mad about this. If he suck we just DFA him. An optionable reliever with a good K/BB ratio will be useful.
Ray Verified Member Posted March 12, 2022 Posted March 12, 2022 We also get a couple extra roster spots for April (I think 28?) If he’s good, keep him. If he’s trash, you can easily release him. Minor league peripherals are really intriguing.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2022 Posted March 12, 2022 I can honestly say I have never heard of this person.
Cbert Verified Member Posted March 12, 2022 Posted March 12, 2022 With no Rule 5 draft this year, does it matter if guys are signed to MLB or minor league contracts? Would this guy just be currently pushing someone off the 40man that we were initially worried about losing to Rule 5?
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2022 Posted March 12, 2022 Second coming of prime Brett Cecil? I would love that surprise.

Would this guy just be currently pushing someone off the 40man that we were initially worried about losing to Rule 5? Anyone who is removed from the 40 man has to pass through waivers, so they could be lost regardless of the rule 5. The rule 5 being cancelled just means we wouldn't have to add people to protect them, but we had already added the ones we wanted to protect, since we had no way of knowing it would be cancelled. It's just good for the Jays in this particular situation, since there were two (at least) unprotected guys who almost certainly would have been taken, and who have some potential upside still.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2022 Posted March 12, 2022 All they do is look at the metrics of his stuff and maybe biomechanics. I don't even think some teams look at peripherals anymore. As an added bonus he has dynamite peripherals as a minor league reliever. Not that old, looks like 2019 he had an injury, 2020 was wiped out because of Covid, so just trying to re-establish himself in 2021.

Forgot about the waivers part. Thanks!
The Iceman Verified Member Posted March 13, 2022 Posted March 13, 2022 Still has a minor league option so nothing to not like here.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted March 13, 2022 Posted March 13, 2022 Still has a minor league option so nothing to not like here. As long as the $ value is reasonable yes Has that been announced yet?
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted March 13, 2022 Posted March 13, 2022 As long as the $ value is reasonable yes Has that been announced yet? I can't imagine he's expensive, the Dodgers non-tendered him in November and he hadn't even hit arbitration yet...
Ray Verified Member Posted March 13, 2022 Posted March 13, 2022 As long as the $ value is reasonable yes Has that been announced yet? I'm pretty sure he's just going to be making league min. The "major league" deal portion of it just means that he's guaranteed a 40-man roster spot to open the season (unless he's released or DFA'd).

He would be arb-elligible this season, so maybe he was looking for a bit more than min, but I can't imagine much more, given his track record wouldn't get him that much of a boost in arbitration.
Arjun Nimmala Vancouver Canadians - A+ SS It's been slow going at the start of the season for Nimmala, but on Sunday, he was 3-for-5 with his 3rd home run and 3 RBI. Explore Arjun Nimmala News >
