Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2022 Posted June 30, 2022 I dunno. If they are more or less the same in value to date, isn't J. Rod just the more exciting player for fans to watch? He's more of an All Star in that sense. Superstar prospect, more homers and steals, doing exciting things. I get it... From a marketing, fan, sex appeal standpoint JRod wins out... Just from a do what's right by your players point of view. You have a guy who has been carrying the Team on his shoulders all season, and a lot last season and even in the brief time he played with them after the trade from San Diego vs. a guy who has been doing it for a month. I get it though... The All-Star game is an entertainment event within an entertainment business... Just sucks to be a really outstanding high performing employee consistently and get overshadowed for a proffessional award by the new guy who has had a good month...
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2022 Posted June 30, 2022 LOL Francona grabbed a batting helmet to celebrate with Naylor LMAO that reminds of when the Jays dugout used a giant foam finger for high fives from Brett Lawrie for celebrations on the bench.

Solaxys Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2022 Posted June 30, 2022 Jesus H 32M AAV, slightly less than Trout; Soto going to be locked in until 36. Wonder how this will affect Judge's ask since he wants to be the highest paid position player lol.
RustyTrombone Verified Member Posted June 30, 2022 Posted June 30, 2022 Imagine if Soto was actually having a good year too. His camp would probably have asked for like 475M

They were saying Soto is going to get $400M+ and that Ohtani is comparable to Soto with the stick. Then they suggested Ohtani is as good as Gerrit Cole on the mound and were wondering if he would get $500-$600M. I don't know what the right answer is, but it's fun to consider.

But who would pay that contract for a 30 yr old player other than the Angels and Mets (can Mets even afford it with their current contracts)? Maybe they do like 150M for 3y and then reeval, but a 10y contract is some high risk signing at his age for that kind of money.

The team might say Soto is only 23 and Ohtani is 27... So a 10 year contract.... One is over at 33 the other at 37... Just saying what the team trying to save money might use as counter to a comparison... Even though as you mentioned with the pitching aspect not really apples to apples..

Sounds like a biased radio station. He’s probably in the tier just under Soto, and the tier under Cole(when he signed his contract). But I do agree on the 500-600 mil contract part. 10 year deal at 500, is 25/yr for his hitting and 25/yr for his pitching. It’ll be a fun offseason, teams have never had to bid on a player like this before.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted July 1, 2022 Posted July 1, 2022 An important question: how long can Ohtani be a two-way player for and perform at a solid-elite level for both? Does he give up pitching half way through his contract lets say if he suffers a major injury and just focusing on being a DH? As a front office, you would want to make sure if you're handing Ohtani a $500 million contract that he hits and pitches for majority of that contract. If he isn't pitching like an ace or No. 2-3 starter in his later years, that contract could be a disaster.
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 1, 2022 Posted July 1, 2022 I wonder if they could do large bonuses based on IP or PA Then if he has to give up pitching because of injury at least a chunk of the contract wouldn't be paid

Laika Community Moderator Posted July 1, 2022 Posted July 1, 2022 Been raised before in relation to other players. Apparently this would be verboten with MLBPA On what basis? We have seen playing time bonuses before
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted July 1, 2022 Posted July 1, 2022 On what basis? We have seen playing time bonuses before As long as the salary adjustment is not tied to injury. An IP or AB trigger would have to be prorated (reduced) based on IL time. I'm going by a recollection of a prior discussion on here.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted July 1, 2022 Posted July 1, 2022 On what basis? We have seen playing time bonuses before Give your head a shake. These union guys know what they’re doing and there’s a difference between bonus structure and a non-guaranteed contract in disguise

Major League Baseball's Basic Agreement prohibits incentives from being awarded based on statistical achievement. Thus, playing time is the near-universal means by which players receive incentives. Pitchers with incentive-laden contracts typically trigger the incentives based on number of innings pitched, number of games started, number of relief appearances, number of games finished, etc. Hitters will most commonly trigger incentives based on plate appearances. Some contracts also contain roster bonuses, which reward a player simply for staying on the active roster for a certain number of days. In the 2011 wave of collective bargaining agreement negotiations, milestone bonuses were prohibited by the league, meaning that players can no longer receive contractual bonuses for reaching plateaus such as their 3,000th hit, 500th home run, 200th win, etc. So would Ohtani take $30M guaranteed with playing time bonuses that can bump it to $60M over $50M guaranteed, say?

Again, dude. The MLBPA doesn’t want to go down that road. Of saying yes we’ll sign you to this 10/300m deal but we’ll put in a playing time cause. They aren’t going to allow contracts to penetrate any grey zone. It’s going to be bonuses for guys on smaller deals and such
