connorp Old-Timey Member Posted June 28, 2022 Posted June 28, 2022 Flipped em the double barrels Umm.. pretty classless but that’s not worthy of much else than a fine. Happens in sports regularly. I was thinking when Grant said it was double digit worthy, he had done more than that towards a fan

Emotions were high and the M’s were right in the whole ordeal.
Laika Community Moderator Posted June 28, 2022 Posted June 28, 2022 That's a shitload of suspensions handed out. So it appears Nevin started a shitball reliever with instructions to hit J-Rod as payback for a high and in pitch to Trout the night before. Missed J-Rod, hit Winker instead. Nevin gets 10 games. Support the coach getting a lot of games But the complicit player should get just as many It does not stand to reason that one pitcher instigated this thing on the field and some Ms got more games...
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted June 28, 2022 Posted June 28, 2022 Goldy has a 199 wRC+ . Another big season he is putting together quietly. Makes me think of that brilliantly managed game by Charlie when he maneuvered Borucki vs Goldy, which ended with a walk off GS. I think about that game and the lack of sunglasses game sometimes and hope I'm not having to do that on Oct. 2nd. We end the season with 6 against BoSox/NYY.
Laika Community Moderator Posted June 28, 2022 Posted June 28, 2022 Goldschmidt's season is putting him firmly on the HoF track Pretty cool because around the time he went from ARI to STL it looked like decline was setting in. Like his K rate was up in 2018 then his production was down in 2019.

He's going to need to age gracefully, but if he can, he has a shot at the HOF. Being in St. Louis now will help. For me, he's right up there with Votto and Freeman.

Goldy has been one of the most underrated superstars in baseball the past decade. He's having a masterful season that isn't getting talked about as much as it should.

You could even make the argument Goldy has been better than Votto and Freeman. Goldy has been pretty much durable throughout his career and I think now he's found a comfort level with the Cardinals. Barring any devastating injury or drastic dropoff, Goldy should still produce in his age 35-40 seasons.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted June 28, 2022 Posted June 28, 2022 Flipped em the double barrels Is this really that disrespectful these days? If you're yelling and swearing at an athlete and they flip you the bird, do you stop and say "OMG, I can't believe he just did that really disrespectful thing - what a bad person". You have to be pushing 70 if you still get offended when someone flips you the bird don't you? I understand that's not a great thing for kids - but I guarantee you that people in the lower bowl could hear all kinds of cursing and swearing during the fight and the fight itself is all just as bad IMO as the double bird.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted June 28, 2022 Posted June 28, 2022 That suspension to Winker had nothing to do with the middle fingers and everything to do with going at their bench and tossing an ump aside in getting there, it might've tacked on an extra game for it, but that was all about the melee. lol

I doubt it had much impact. He was definitely in there throwing a ton of actual punches during the fight. Jomboy just did a long, good breakdown of it. Seems pretty clear that Phil Nevin sent the reliver in to throw at people because he's a little bitch. I've said this multiple times, if you don't like something they did to you or one of your players, then confront them and punch them in the face yourself. Sending a shitbag reliver in to start the game and throw at Julio's head is f***ing ********. Such a pussy move. This is one of those unwritten rule things that needs to phased out of baseball. I'm glad Winker didn't just go to first and then tell his pitcher to throw at one of their batters to 'get back at them'. That's nonsense.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted June 28, 2022 Posted June 28, 2022 Kenley back to the IL with an irregular heartbeat. Awful news for him and the Braves. Hope he's OK soon.

I have serious doubts that MLB sees it this way. I think he gets 3 games like the pitcher if he doesn't interact with the fans in that manner. Players have to be more professional than the fans. I'm struggling to even think of a recent example where a player had a worse interaction with fans. It's not much different than the actions that instigated the Boston shoe brawl or the malice at the palace.

You think that's worse than Myles Straw jumping up on the fence to engage in a shouting match with a fan? Did Straw even get a fine or suspension for that? https://www.chron.com/sports/astros/article/Myles-Straw-Yankees-fans-yelled-hit-me-get-mad-17127122.php and...how the f*** are you comparing flipping the bird to some fans as you walk off to Mike Mulbury (and sever other players) climbing up into the stands and beating a fan with his own shoe? You're suggesting that flipping the bird to someone is what instigated those players actions and thus we should really punish any player who flips the bird because it could lead to a similar situation? I don't buy that. I see flipping the bird to someone as a pretty harmless and childish act. I agree players are held to a higher standard, but I also don't think fans should be allowed to scream and swear and do whatever they want to players either - kick those f***ing ****s out of the stadium. I'm not suggesting that MLB encourage it, but I just don't see it as really offensive in today's world.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted June 28, 2022 Posted June 28, 2022 Didn't Jansen have this issue in the past? Yes he has. I think he had an operation on it in 2018.

You or I might’ve done the same thing in that situation with tensions running high and some tough guy yelling at you. Not sure all the reasons here for discipline. Sure it can happen. human beings. do the crime take the time. MLB is always going to crack down on negative interaction with fans like that by players 100% of the time. Even if its egged on by the fan. Why? Because they are fans/customers. Its a slippery slope for players they don't want to see ever get out of hand. As an aside, as a Bruins fan I remember Mike Milbury climbing through the stands in his skates and hockey gear pounding fans who threw something at them lol. Its not a good look for the brand.

Draymond Green- I remember that one bc I liked the quote of his after “I heard them cheering (at being flipped off) because they thought I’d get fined. I make $25m so I’ll be just fine”.. drop the mic lol
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted June 28, 2022 Posted June 28, 2022 Those were stories, sure there was lesser guys that did it too just this last season

Not sure what you guys saw, but the Angels feed showed him cursing and swearing and flipping birds multiple times to numerous people not just once he was out of control and in my mind it was a disgrace. I dont care how many games he got Im just saying it was bad.

connorp Old-Timey Member Posted June 28, 2022 Posted June 28, 2022 Well that’s definitely different than flipping them off walking back to the dugout. Yeah I was just commenting on someone saying they flipped the bird. That’d be a fine I assume. Getting into a verbal altercation with fans might be worth a game or two suspension. I think the bulk was clearly escalating a huge brawl by plowing into the other team after tossing the ump aside

I dont care how many games he got Im just saying it was bad. This is the only clip I've seen and it's a pretty standard double bird as he walks into the dugout. I don't think anyone went home with their feeling hurt that Winker flipped them off that day and he's already apologized. I think disgrace is too strong. What is really sad is that little girl who went to see Votto play (when he got tossed in the 1st inning) was at this game. She came to watch Winker and Suarez play and of course both got tossed out of the game after this brawl. All because Phil Nevin was butt hurt and decided to play old skoool baseball and purposely hit players and start a brawl. That's the disgrace.
