I mean its still a lot of money but seems light for the quality of player. He definitely left a lot of money on the table. It’s nice to have players like this in your organization but obviously the PA probably hates this.

If nothing else we don’t have to hear about rumours of him being traded here for atleast a couple years. Will check back at his age 34 season.

Cody Bellinger wraps up spring training:

139/162/139, 18K, 1BB in 36 AB

I'm sure he's just working out the kinks.

According to baseball reference, the average quality of pitchers he faced was 7.1/10, or AA level.

I'm not convinced J-ram ages well. He would have been 31 when hitting the market.

Ramirez provides positive value in all aspects of baseball (power, on-base, defence, baserunning). He would have to lose skills everywhere simultaneously like Jason Heyward to truly lose his value. Even then, the AAV is so reasonable, they would probably break even.

He would literally have to turn into Kendrys Morales (and relatively soon) to lose on this deal. Cleveland absolutely cleaned up here.

To be fair, I'm sure his agent said, don't take that deal, don't take that deal! A crazy injury can happen at any time and he had 2 years before free agency. You have to present the offers. It's entirely possible Ramirez liked Cleveland and 124 million dollars is still 124 million dollars. It's kind of refreshing to see an elite athlete not force his way out of a small market and take a home town discount.

He's already got the "insurance against a crazy injury" contract. This isn't a dude who would otherwise be making league min or something, he's set for the life of his grandchildren if he snapped his spine in half tomorrow. So I don't think the "what if a freak injury happens?!" concerns should come in to play here...

His first contract was somehow even worse. 6/36 from 2017-22 with a 2023 club option.

So, he will finish his age 34 or 35 season with $186 million in career earnings. How much money has he left on the table as a 3-time 6+ fWAR player? 300+ million?

As this shows, organizational culture and keeping your players happy is unbelievably valuable. The potential upside is hundreds of millions of dollars as you point out.

Anthopoulos became a master at this. Guys like Ricciardi cost us colossal dollar value and potential HOF lifers simply by being heavy handed.

I appreciate that the baseball gods saw fit to give us another Chris Davis so soon after we lost him.

And the JRam dream is officially over. Surprised he took a discount to stay with a team not on a cusp of the world series.

Why is it over?

Wow he really wanted to stay with the Indians. I'm sure they will try and trade him in a year or 2.

He has a full NTC, 10-5 rights this offseason, and reportedly signed this deal against his agent's advice because he wanted to stay in Cleveland. It's over.

It's officially over for the next season or two for the reasons stated by others already. Sucks because he'd be the perfect fit but I'm also happy that we didn't overpay for him either. Hope Biggio can have a good bounce back year.

or he wanted the financial security, and is not averse to a trade to the right team

i'm sure shatkins has or will check in

So Camden Yards now has a 90 degree walk in left centre field.

I wonder what precipitated this change... the fact that their shittiest hitters are right handed and dont hit homers anyway, and they have 3 lefties in the rotation so... lets move the RF fence back so it doesnt hurt us but might hurt others?

Orioles talked about this a number of months ago. If I recall it has to do with attracting FA pitchers to sign with them. No pitcher wanted to pitch in that hitter friendly band box.

Why couldn't they smooth out that corner though.

I hear you on that, but that's leaving at least 75M on the table. Egregious, Cleveland are slime.

How are they slime for being poor? It’s not like they forced him to sign the contract at gunpoint. He could have gone somewhere else for a lot more money, but for whatever reason he’s Cleveland’s #1 fan. After he retires the city should hire him to run their tourism industry.

It's Baltimore, they probably only have 1 or 2 engineers and architects in the entire city and probably not on the higher end of skills.

This seems super-dumb. They are moving the fence back 25 feet? Why? It was a hitters park but not extreme. It will be like

"Ryan Mountcastle up to bat... kid hit 33 homers last year, this year 14. 12 on the road. "

Anyone remember Citifield the first 2 or 3 years? What a disaster.

Also while checking the parkfactor I noticed Jays beat Orioles in attendance. Jays 12/15 in attendance despite like a) playing 2 months in A+ park, two months a AAA park, and 2 months in Toronto mostly under dumb-ass restrictions **

(** not political, meant to say 'well thought out safety-first restrictions' just was typing too fast)

If there's one city that doesn't need help with tourism, it's Cleveland...

I can see why JRam wanted to stay!
