Montoyo is lousy, but this middle relief is unmanageable, choke artists up and down, even the guys that are pretty good find a way to choke when the screws get too tight.

He's over-managing. He needs to stop playing the matchups as much with all the frequent pitching changes. He doesn't have the personnel to do it.

For Montoya not to look ahead and assess that his best LHP option in Mayza would be needed in the seventh, which could have been set up if he allows Berrios to pitch the sixth after 88 pitches is inexcusable for a supposed MLB manager. Chuckles also thinks that Hand is a better option over Mayza most likely.

It’s not that Berrios is bad, it’s that the team would’ve been better served either getting someone for scoring more runs, or protecting leads over a guy that goes every 5th day. SPs are usually acquired with the playoffs in mind

Playoffs are still in mind for next season though. Can't always be trading for 2 month rentals

 

That said, Montoyo's bullpen and pitching management in general this year is a complete disaster. He constantly makes poor decisions on when to remove starters, which relievers to bring in when .. .it's like he's just throwing darts at a board and going with whoever's name it lands on.
