BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted May 13, 2021 Posted May 13, 2021 (edited) I don't post new threads often, but when I do its for badass unheralded pen arms that go out and own hitters. Chatwood has been an incredible boost for us given the loss of Yates and Merryweather. 13k/9 and chewing up leverage innings for $3mm/year. Can he maintain this? Who cares...even if he is close to what he has been and can stay healthy he has been a great signing. Edited June 5, 2021 by Laika

He has always had exceptional spin and secondary pitches but the constant attempts to make him a good starter had him focusing on non-reliever traits. He has always seemed like a guy who was one tweak away from being very good. I think this K% is mostly legit. If the league adjusts we might see his BB% double though, so there could be some regression. Quick glance - he is throwing A LOT more cutters this year.

I saw that...almost 50% cutters which is way up usage. Basically what that fangraphs chart showed was what i thought was a slider is a cutter? His V has been consistent since 2017. I cant imagine there wont be some regression, to be expected. He has been lights out. Been such a weird season. I think about those early Merryweather appearances where he dominated NYY. Its like did that happen? Was that a mirage? Then Charlie brings him in for 2 inning stint, and poof he is gone again. Edited May 13, 2021 by BigCecil

The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted May 14, 2021 Posted May 14, 2021 Our bullpen as a whole has the 3rd lowest ERA at 2.87. It's only beat by Cleveland(2.59) and the Padres(2.64).

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted May 14, 2021 Posted May 14, 2021 That explains why AJ Cole was closing a game.

Dooger Verified Member Posted May 16, 2021 Posted May 16, 2021 I completely agree with you, BigCecil. Tyler Chatwood is a stud, and a steal for 3 million per! BTW, in your opinion how much do think the Jays' numerous pitching injuries so far this year are simplydue to bad bad luck, versus the team asking them some of them being asked to throw a bit harder this year than they are physically capable of? I'd rather have seen Yates and Merriweather filling up the zone at 96 instead of tossing 99-100 and lasting just weeks. JMHO.

Pitchers are just especially vulnerable given how unnatural it is to hurl a 90 MPH object. And you’re right that there’s a lot of focus on throwing harder now rather than learning to control pitches, sequencing and execution. There’s a huge mental aspect of pitching that doesn’t get recognized in an era where people focus on spin rates, whiffs, and strikeouts. I love seeing guys that throw low 90s and carve up batters like Ryu and Greinke.

I'd add Kershaw and Yarbrough to that list. Kershaw lost 2-3 MPH off his FB but he is still effective, although i see his V has ticked back up in 21 so far. Chatwood did his job for again last night fighting some s*** show umping performance.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted May 31, 2021 Author Posted May 31, 2021 Bump. He has got mechanics and between the ears issues going on. Low leverage until he gets back on track. And if Charlie would have taken him out like he should have yesterday, no room for Chatwood to pitch another fit over it. Just Pitch better. Our pen is too thin.

Unfortunately, THIS is probably the true Chatwood. We were lucky to squeeze some good use out of him early on but now he’s back to his career norms

We were lucky to squeeze some good use out of him early on but now he’s back to his career norms I don't think so. His stuff plays out of pen. He is using his cutter a ton more. Good movement on his FB and 95-97 V is consistent for him. I think he will be a high leverage guy for us again...once he finds the plate lol.

That’s a whole .5 worse than Robbie Ray. His stuff plays yes, but only when he can establish that he can throw strikes. This is probably the true Chatwood.

Could live with 4.7 BB/9 with his stuff....Dolis is actually 5.5/9 BB to contrast. We cant live with a 100% BB rate like the last couple outings lol. Chatwood's career BB numbers makes Charlie's decision to leave him in, even when a blind man could see he lost the zone, even more egregious. Edited June 1, 2021 by BigCecil

Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted June 2, 2021 Posted June 2, 2021 What a flop he has been! I mean, he's had 2 bad outings. He may continue to have bad outings, but he hasn't been bad, on balance, this year.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted June 5, 2021 Posted June 5, 2021 Jesus Christ what the f*** happened to Chatwood?

saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted June 5, 2021 Posted June 5, 2021 Chatwood has made 20 appearances. He gave up 0 runs in 16. 1 run in a game we won earlier in the season and he's be shelled in 3 of his last 4 outings. His struggles tonight were perfectly timed. They didn't cost us anything. He still has a dynamic fastball with late movement. Pete and Chatwood have to put in the work and get back in the strike zone. We really have no choice. We're so thin in the pen. Hopefully he can figure it out soon.
