Laika Community Moderator Posted March 14, 2021 Posted March 14, 2021 Gameday is mislabeling SWR pitches by the way. Some of these curve labels are actually changeups. There was a cutter labelled as a slider. The change looks good The slider is getting called a curve too. So it's all over the place
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 14, 2021 Posted March 14, 2021 SWR is going to have to get by on plus pitchability or some kind of weaponized off speed stuff because his fastball is very average. I don't see him as a high upside arm, perhaps more of a potential 4th or 5th SP like Kay and Hatch. lol.... Laika Longenhagen with us today.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 14, 2021 Posted March 14, 2021 SWR looked pretty good to me, he's still just 20 years old.

Looks to be a strike throwing machine with a full bag of pitches. Plus command elevates the bag of mostly average stuff. But the change and curve both have some nice characteristics visually at least. If he can add some Velo somehow, look out.

See, now that's what I saw. We should still see his velo tick up, as well.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted March 14, 2021 Posted March 14, 2021 SWR is 20, he should have a couple of ticks yet to come on the FB. Agree with Spank
Laika Community Moderator Posted March 14, 2021 Posted March 14, 2021 Age alone doesn't portend to Velo increase though. He looks pretty built already
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted March 14, 2021 Posted March 14, 2021 Age alone doesn't portend to Velo increase though. He looks pretty built already Agreed but it's more probable he gets the velo increase than not.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 14, 2021 Posted March 14, 2021 Age alone doesn't portend to Velo increase though. He looks pretty built already Well, reports say he sat 2 mph better in the past and touched 97, it's there, hopefully.
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted March 14, 2021 Posted March 14, 2021 Agreed but it's more probable he gets the velo increase than not. Yeah and it was reported he was up to 97 mph in the off-site last season. He's possibly still ramping up and it's more of a matter of sitting mid-90s instead of low 90s. It's definitely possible.
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted March 14, 2021 Posted March 14, 2021 Well, reports say he sat 2 mph better in the past and touched 97, it's there, hopefully. This. Good timing lol.

Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 14, 2021 Posted March 14, 2021 Kloff, yes. Been waiting to see this kid.

Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 14, 2021 Posted March 14, 2021 Hopefully they put out a good starting unit to make it fun to watch. They'll have a few regulars and pitching. Most of the squad won't take the bus ride.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted March 14, 2021 Posted March 14, 2021 Kloff showing a fastball with heavy sink, big curve, I think a slider on the K, and now a show-me changeup to the lefty.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 14, 2021 Posted March 14, 2021 Nicely done, got a bit lucky. Stuff looks good.

Hard to judge much from that outing but that's definitely a fastball with run and sink. Ten years ago that would be a good thing but not sure these days. 93-94.8 is good. Could see him sitting like 95 later this year maybe.

Laika Community Moderator Posted March 14, 2021 Posted March 14, 2021 Groshans has looked pretty immature at the plate all spring. Guess hitter so far.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted March 14, 2021 Posted March 14, 2021 Groshans has looked pretty immature at the plate all spring. Guess hitter so far. Do you mean Martin, since Groshans didn't hit that inning?
Laika Community Moderator Posted March 14, 2021 Posted March 14, 2021 Do you mean Martin, since Groshans didn't hit that inning? No, Groshans. Just a stray thought I didn't post while Groshans was up
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 14, 2021 Posted March 14, 2021 Groshans has looked pretty immature at the plate all spring. Guess hitter so far. I noticed the same, some really ugly swings, he needs a lot more time.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted March 14, 2021 Posted March 14, 2021 No, Groshans. Just a stray thought I didn't post while Groshans was up It's pretty clear the lost time has affected his development, at least his current readiness. Too young and raw to have that much time not playing competitive baseball.
43211234 Verified Member Posted March 14, 2021 Posted March 14, 2021 Do you mean Martin, since Groshans didn't hit that inning? Martin had a nice, patient walk. Groshans' earlier AB he was late on the fastball again and had a bad check-swing whiff on a breaking ball way outside.

There broadcast guys mentioned the same thing about him guessing.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted March 14, 2021 Posted March 14, 2021 Van Eyck's stuff isn't bad, fastball at 93-95 (sitting 94) which has yet to be squared up, and the curve has alright movement although not sure if due to his lack of command it's not tunneling at all.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 14, 2021 Posted March 14, 2021 Yeah, he's struggling bigly with command, expected as he's graded with below average command, right now.
