He's a perfectly good #4 or #5 starter with the upside to be more. I like it. Hopefully we'll see that 37.8% home run rate drop down to where it should be.

Thing is our entire rotation is full of 4/5 guys with the exception of Ryu. I am going to guess Mets will be eating most of the salary here so they can stay below the luxury tax line when they acquire Bauer. We also free up our 40 man so it could be a win win all around.

Matz has good stuff, I'm sure some of our internal metrics see some upside in him.

Find a way to suppress those HRs and he's a solid mid rotation guy.

So virtually nothing.

Maybe Matz ends up being a decent reliever

He's too expensive...waste of resources. I didn't get the chatwood signing. I get this one even less.

Translation - none of these players are worth anything.

Hopefully s***** prospects.

I don't think Matz is worth much. Some upside, sure.

Lol at calling Sean Reid Foley a prospect.

garbage move....5.2 mil for Matz. We could have had Archer for less than that.

As Laika points out - easier said than done to attract someone like Archer on a pillow contract when you play in the AL East. They must see something in Matz.

We'll probably need the extra starters anyway. I think it's highly likely there will be a bunch of postponed games or even series early in the season, and that means a lot of double headers late. This is a good year to have depth imo.

A healthy Jays rotation looks something like:

Ryu

Pearson

Ray

Matz

Stripling/Roark

It's not an ideal playoff group, but we've seen teams like Oakland and TB win with similar or worse starting groups. Everyone but Ryu goes twice through then turn it over to what actually looks like a decent bullpen. There's a lot of variance there with Pearson having huge upside and Matz/Ray/Stripling looking like average (or better) starters pretty recently.

We saw something in Roark, Garcia and Anderson. We have trouble identifying pitching..lol. Sure we got Ryu, but everyone knew he was good, he just came with injury risk. I would have rather signed Paxton than getting cute with Matz and Chatwood.

I still think they add one solid SP. Ideally Matz isn't handed a spot and is competing with Roark and Stripling in spring.

So right now the rotation is:

Ryu

Ray

Pearson

Matz

Stripling

But I suspect a few more moves this week. A trade and another FA signing. Hendriks and Walker.

If we don't add another starter and Ryu gets hurt for any length of time our rotation is hot garbage.

Hendricks would be fantastic and really round out the pitching staff.

Very doubtful Pearson, even if he’s good, is starting come playoff time (if they make it at least)

Ya I was just mentioning we had a bunch of 4/5 starters but this could still be a great move if the Mets are eating some of the 5.2M salary. We had to make room on the 40 man roster anyways so might as well get a guy who could be a 4/5 starter or go to the Pen.

The Blue Jays are taking on almost al of Steven Matz’s $5.2 million salary, per source.

And with Walker, Jays could run with a 6 man rotation which may be wise given the limited innings last year.

Matz and Chatwood don't prevent us from signing Paxton or Odorizzi or even Bauer....

I think based on the fact that Walker actually wants to come back, that he might be the last piece. I'm okay with it if the price is right.

I'd like one more arm, was sort of expecting Odorizzi and Walker, but Matz and Walker might be it. Walker is saying all the right things about wanting to use data etc, which makes me hopeful that he can actually have some value.

Great trade for the Mets. Let's them free up 5m that will go to Bauer. I thought Shatkins would be looking to get a #2 not a #5 that the team has like plenty of.

Ok now I don't like it as much if this means we offer less for Paxton/Odorizzi/Walker. If we get one of those guys then hard to be upset at this in any way. Just more competition between Roark/Stripling/Matz.

Yeah if the Jays add another SP it will either be a trade or re-signing Walker. I don't think they are getting Paxton or Odorizzi, but who knows.

I don't mind Walker. We really need Ray to be good this year. I think Ray can bounce back. Fingers crossed.

This trade with the mets is very bad. Giving up way to much for a pitcher with a losing record.

ERA over 4.40. And two or the three pitchers are in the jays top 30. With last years trades for the jays at

the dead line giving up more top prospects. Never have agreed with giving up prospects for players

for two or three months. VERY STUPID.

I mean, I'm hopeful they view Matz as a pen guy and they wanted another lefty which would make sense. If they have him slotted in as a rotation guy, I'm baffled.

Quoting ERA and W-L..man of a mission

Yeah, very little value going out. I'm fine with this I guess.

Matz might have a bit more upside than most of the free agent pitchers.

On one hand, I want to say that I would prefer to just cut two guys from the 40 and sign a free agent pitcher for $8M or whatever... but signing a solid SP to a pillow contract in the AL East is easier said than done. It's not where SP go to build value, obviously.

I trust the organization so much that I assume they have an idea of how to fix Matz.

My feelings exactly.
