max silver Old-Timey Member Posted August 18, 2021 Posted August 18, 2021 We had that guy in Tellez, but he started slow when we needed him to be hot, then had to sit when we brought Springer back (too early) and had to DH him and then we shipped him away because the bullpen sucked. Sometime it just works out that way. I still find myself wishing that the club would have given Vladdy Jr. a chance to play third base in the spring to see how he looked there. After the weightloss with the way he's moving on the field now he likely could have played close to if not better than average at third base. Having Rowdy at first base and Vladdy at third base likely would have strengthened the club a great deal compared to having Biggio play out of position at third.

Definitely could have made a big difference. But who knows if Vlad puts up the numbers he has while struggling defensively at 3B
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted August 18, 2021 Posted August 18, 2021 Too bad Jays didn't cash in on Semien and Ray. Remember the Blues trading Stastny at the deadline when they were just outside the playoffs. They won the Cup the next season.

Remember the Blues trading Stastny at the deadline when they were just outside the playoffs. They won the Cup the next season. Up until the most recent Springer injury I thought the club had a very strong chance to work their way into a wildcard slot. Trading away top talent for a contending ballclub likely would have really pissed off guys that you want to retain as members of your future core. Unfortunately without Springer and the continued tirefire of a bullpen their chances have essentially faded away, but I don't think there was really any way to predict that Springer would have suffered a freak injury and ended up missing most if not all of the rest of the regular season.

It’s still a calculated risk that has to be factored in. Could be Bo or Ryu going down on whoever. You make a move like the Berrios trade and you definitely have to take the heat on the deal, or deal that you should’ve made in hindsight. Jays had to jump a handful of equal-type teams. There’s reasoning on both sides but you’re the hero or zero depending on how the dice roll

Remember the Blues trading Stastny at the deadline when they were just outside the playoffs. They won the Cup the next season. My first thought when the White Sox traded Madrigal was whether the Jays could have gotten him for Semien (Sox need help at 2B). Maybe they preferred Kimbrel for the pen, but deals where the Jays sent Semien/Ray for players that could help in 2022 and/or beyond (like Madrigal, or PCA from the Mets, etc) while still making moves like the Berrios one that also showed they were looking to acquire vet assets for 2022 as well would have been the better strategy. Of course, as we know, the team lets optics get in the way of baseball decisions, so even if they wanted to sell high they probably couldn't for a number of reasons (returning home, optics of selling right before that, etc).
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted August 18, 2021 Posted August 18, 2021 As annoyed as I am with how this season has gone, I can move past not making the playoffs this season. Next year will be a make or break year for this front office as they've had ample time to put thing together. How we handle this offseason will be crucial.
jerb Verified Member Posted August 18, 2021 Posted August 18, 2021 Shi Davidi @ShiDavidi It’s a Grade 1 knee sprain for George Springer, with no timeline yet, Blue Jays say. Typically that degree of sprain involves stretching of/mild damage to a ligament but it’s still holding the joint relatively stable. Rob Longley @longleysunsport #Bluejays staff in D.C. feel the injury to Springer is "week to week." Considered less severe than the one which sidelined Bichette four weeks last year. Team will monitor healing process and proceed accordingly.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted August 18, 2021 Posted August 18, 2021 Given the accuracy of injury updates from the club I take this to mean that Springer is done for the season. Day to day with this club means several weeks, where week to week typically indicates several months.
RobinThicc Verified Member Posted August 18, 2021 Posted August 18, 2021 Week to week aka done for the year.

But it didn't have to begin and end there with Rowdy.

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted August 18, 2021 Posted August 18, 2021 Listening to Mets pod with Darryl Strawberry fuming at Rojas for not using "one of the best pitchers on the planet" in a situation. That pitcher is Aaron f***ing Loup. Guy has a 1.78 FIP and 1.6 fWAR. Lights out. Seems so strange to hear. He has to be one of the most cursed at Jays reliever I can remember.
jerb Verified Member Posted August 18, 2021 Posted August 18, 2021 Kaitlyn McGrath @kaitlyncmcgrath #BlueJays injury updates per Montoyo: - Stripling has been shut down from throwing for 10-14 days after the oblique injury. - Hatch will stay stretched out for now as depth - Jansen (hamstring) should be in rehab games by next week Kaitlyn McGrath @kaitlyncmcgrath - Still no timetable on Springer but obviously team is relieved some it’s mild sprain - It sounds like Biggio won’t return to the club until he gets going offensively in Triple A. Position players can be on rehab assignments for 20 days but he can stay down longer if optioned
