G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 20, 2021 Posted April 20, 2021 (edited) I know it is a small sample size, but Steven Matz has looked really, really good. Better than his decent years in 2018-2019. It sounds like the Jays pitching staff knew they could fix him a little when the brought him over, so maybe it would not be too huge a surprise if he continued to succeed. He can't continue the amazing success of the early 2021 campaign, but if his regressions means a solid #3 or #4 starter going forward do you think an extension may be a great idea? Or, if he continues to be stellar, he may earn a QO. But at 29-years old and with his talent, I would not be hesitant to offer him something now. All Star break add 2 years for 24-30M total and I love it Edited April 20, 2021 by G-Snarls

Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted April 20, 2021 Posted April 20, 2021 Their top 4 hitters line up probably slightly below ours, and I'd say we have the deeper lineup in general. Both rotations have huge question marks, and could swing the advantage to either team. Who are our top 4 hitters? Springer, Vlad, Bo, Biggio ? Not sure if Gurriel or Hernandez is projected better then Biggio was Those 4 line up to Martinez, Devers, Bogaerts and Verdugo without checking I would bet Boston's guys are projected better. Am I wrong?

Am I wrong? By RoS projections (Springer's has somehow dropped by 10 points from pre-season despite him just being out a month?) Vlad 131 wRC+ > JD Martinez 121 wRC+: would take the over on JDM but Vlad can also surpass his Bo 110 wRC+ < Bogaerts 116 wRC+: would easily take the over on both guys, Bogaerts seems to consistently outperform his xwOBA significantly so maybe this is why the projections don't buy into him Springer 118 <= Devers 119 wRC+: Springer's pre-season projections were 128 wRC+, what gives? Biggio 100 wRC+ < Verdugo 107 wRC+: for what it's worth Rowdy, Semien and Kirk all project better than Biggio around roughly 104 wRc+ each It's pretty much tied, Boston might have a slight lead with Springer's projections down a significant amount inexplicably.

It really depends which projections you use I guess. Looks like you're using FGDC? They have Teoscar at 99wRC+. His last 4 seasons were 143(2020), 102, 107, 134. ZipsROS: Vlad 126 > Bogarts 122 Bo 118 = Devers 118 Teoscar 111 < JD 117 Semien 108 = Verdugo 109 Springer N/A: Career average is 134. YTY= 146(2020), 157, 119, 140, 126, 133
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted April 20, 2021 Posted April 20, 2021 Also what are the chances Kansas City and Boston are stealing signs? Perez, who people tell me is a pile of crap, creams 2 pitches, VGJ style, at the exact key moment... like he knew what was coming. OK. Depleted bullpen, Zeuch... but on the other side it was Salvadore Perez, who they tell me is garbage too... Boston - they tell me Boston is bad. Cora comes back. Boston is a hitting like it's 1999 or 2005 or 2018. I'm thinking of the steroid era... the first few guys get caught... it has to be over right? Of course A-Rod/Melky and some others get caught a few years later. Why would this sign stealing thing be different? I don't know about sign stealing... but I wouldn't be surprised to see Salvy Perez get caught for steroids. It just seems to fit.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2021 Posted April 21, 2021 I like Biggio back as the leadoff hitter. Going back to seeing a lot of pitches might get him going again. He was great there all last season. Semien moving down badly needed to happen.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 22, 2021 Posted April 22, 2021 Then what? It'll be Palacios, Espinal or Davis, man. Ug, too many outfielders I suppose
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 22, 2021 Posted April 22, 2021 Ug, too many outfielders I suppose Exactly and I find it highly likely that Tellez has plenty of leash, it's April and we're talking SSS, Rowdy was atrocious out of the gate but he's been much better lately, check his recent splits a few days ago I went back a week on him and he had a wRC+ of 163 I believe. Give it time, the same thing happens when Teo's back, they'll move another OF'er back to the alternate site. No way we see him moved out for any of those bats. Same goes for the people thinking they'll switch up the D, that's not happening either, I'm assuming the Jays are married to this team the way their positioned as the FULL day 1 projected roster. *golf claps for the guys whom stepped up on the bench, literally all of them* It's a process.

BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted April 22, 2021 Posted April 22, 2021 (edited) The DH production is a problem, but it’s more urgent to fix the defense. There’s no way the Jays are making the postseason when every batted ball to the left side is an adventure. Biggio at 3B is an experiment that needs to end soon. TBF it’s not just him, bobbles at SS and poor routes at LF. It’s just a bad combo. Edited April 22, 2021 by BlueRocky

He's one of many guys who look like crap out there. He's been having better at bats recently. Who of our guys are eligible to come back for the Tampa series? Teo too right?

The lineup sets up pretty nicely with Biggio on the bench if rowdy can figure it out. Springer CF Vlad 3B Bo SS Teo DH Rowdy 1B Randall RF Lourdes LF Semien 2B Kirk C Biggio UT
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted April 22, 2021 Posted April 22, 2021 I think the best answer is Semien at 3rd, Cavan at 2nd. Keep Vlad at 1st and if he keeps sucking he DH's. If you keep Rowdy at DH you can cycle guys through the DH spot and move Rowdy to the bench when someone needs to get off their feet.

Last I heard (which wasn't that recently) was that Teo was still experiencing symptoms, so no guarantee that he'll be back when eligible.

Latest News Apr 17, 1:22 PM EDT EDT Hernandez (illness) is no longer experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun reports. Analysis Hernandez tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday and was symptomatic for several days. Although he'll miss at least 10 days due to the league's health and safety protocols, Hernandez will be eligible to return as soon as April 23 against the Rays if he can test negative before then.

Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted April 22, 2021 Posted April 22, 2021 An ace reliever? He has a negative FIP for his MLB career. He also has a career 27.0 K/9, so he's probably going to be the ace of the staff soon. Also, he's been a starter in the minors, so he's likely starting depth in case every other one of our pitchers goes down...
