Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2021 Posted January 21, 2021 Why won't we sign Tommy La Stella to play 3rd instead? 2 year $14M with a club option maybe? He gives you about 90-95% of Brantley's bat, is a big time contact hitter from the left side and plays a position of need. 2 years younger and won't cost near as much. TLS needs a platoon buddy, but I still think he's a good fit. If we wanted to give Vlad Jr. a handful of games at third, he would fit in nicely with La Stella, playing 3rd against lefties.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2021 Posted January 21, 2021 Vlad should be nowhere 3rd man. Nothing has shown he has a chance to be even average there. We should be worried if he can even play 1B at a major league level.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2021 Posted January 21, 2021 I can’t be upset when that gif is used against me. Fair play.
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 21, 2021 Posted January 21, 2021 Hahaha... yesterday you said the Jays weren't signing Springer, c'mon man! dusted

Nice thing about Tommy is that there is ostensibly some defensive flexibility since he has played 3B, 2B and 1B The bad thing about Tommy is that he's a below average defender at 3B and 2B who showed serious signs of age in 2020 (sprint speed dipped to 19th percentile + terrible BsR) The uncertain thing about Tommy is the offense. Elite contact hitter who seems to have figured out how to put enough baseballs over the fence recently, but he doesn't hit the ball hard at all. It's a weird offensive profile for someone without much defensive value There's a chance he is a viable 3B with an above average stick. There's also a chance he's a bad infielder and a slapdick hitter.

connorp Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2021 Posted January 21, 2021 Pretty lukewarm text on Didi. Doesn’t seem like much to get excited on. I’m sure he’d be willing to play 3b if need be but if he wants to play SS, sure teams will be there to give him same money...likely Philly

Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2021 Posted January 21, 2021 Doom and gloom ..... imagine how shocked I am Just living up to your profile picture I love the potential with Vladdy as a hitter but the fielding side is different issue. I am just trying to be realistic based on what I've seen thus far. He already had questions about the defense coming up and now we know why.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2021 Posted January 21, 2021 Are we married to Bichette staying @ SS? Don’t know the inner workings but if your star player wants to play there, I’d imagine you’d want to try to accommodate that unless you clearly thought you could make team better there (Lindor say). I mean you want to run your team to win but you also have to think about signing these guys (Vlad, Bo) into FA years if you can at some point
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2021 Posted January 21, 2021 Wonder what led to the deal breaking apart so fast. My guess would be the other trade didn't happen and this got leaked too early so everything broke apart. BLAME HAZEL!!!

Bo has played 75 games at SS and already showed he can improve there. Unless we get a franchise changer like a Lindor, it should be his position for at least one 162 game season. By 2022, we should know exactly where all our young guys can play. That is the year I expect this team to really take off.

His bat really isn't anything special, his expected stats the last few seasons don't paint a very pretty picture. He's more than likely to have a league average bat. That's an improvement on what's available in house for sure, but there should be better targets available to go after first.

You'd think that any SS can play all over the infield at an above average clip but it is risky to invest into him. Would much rather go harder at Turner as a stop gap solution or trade for Bryant. The time to go for a SS will be next offseason.

That's an improvement on what's available in house for sure, but there should be better targets available to go after first. His expected stats have always been like this, this is just who he is. He thrives on pulling the ball and putting it in the air often while basically never striking out. That works if your home ballpark is Yankee Stadium, Citizens Bank, and the Rogers Centre. It's not like his EV being low is a recent development, he's always hit like this. Sign me up for league average hitting with average to above defense at 3B and 2B with the ability to play at SS when necessary. We've had a black hole at one of our infield positions for the last two seasons, adding an "average" player like Didi is already a massive improvement, I'm certainly not scoffing at the 2.5 WAR that he projects at a reasonable price just because he's not a superstar. How exactly are you guys expecting us to address the infield situation?
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2021 Posted January 21, 2021 I could warm up to Didi if Turner isn't an option.

To clarify I meant there was nothing exciting about the tweet, meaning Jay interest came off as lukewarm. I think he’d be a great target. Basically been a 4 WAR player 3 of the last 4 seasons and the one he wasn’t was a serious injury year. Not sure how many position guys you’re getting for 2/28 or whatever for that. I think Steamers projection is conservative on his bat. The injury year jades that I think. That said, as mentioned I’m not sure it’s worth telling Bo he’s moving. I’m sure Bo would but doesn’t mean he’d want to. I won’t presume to know what the situation there is
Ryu In My House Verified Member Posted January 21, 2021 Posted January 21, 2021 I could warm up to Didi if Turner isn't an option. Turner would be a prime candidate for an overpay 1-2 year contract. Just to fill 3B until players like maybe Groshans or Martin are ready to step in.

Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 Brantley was 'close' to joining Jays before re-signing with Astros https://www.thescore.com/mlb/news/2099919 This does hurt lol.. He would have put our lineup over the top but that can still happen so let's see.

Houston has lost a lot of talent the last couple of years, and don’t seem willing to spend to keep up. You have to wonder how Verlander will pitch after his TJ surgery, they lost Cole and Springer, and will likely lose Correa next year. All the talk for years were about how tanking would lead to sustainable winning, but the Cubs and perhaps the Astros don’t seem to be living up to that, if they aren’t willing to spend. Dodgers and Yankees have sustainable teams, but they also aren’t afraid to pay for them. Hope the Jays are willing to pony up in 4-5 years once Bo and Vladdy start getting expensive.

Seems like Houston upped their offer at the end to ensure they wouldn't lose Springer and Brantley to us within 48 hours. We probably had a 3 year offer but at a lower AAV (3/40?).
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 Yeah I think the stuff about winning with Houston is just puffery. I want he took the highest AAV and is just betting that he'll still be able to get a deal two years from now

Same reason why Springer won't say the same thing lol.
