All good until the playoffs then you're facing a Cole, Sherzer, Strasburg, deGrom, Bieber, Snell, Buehler, Kershaw, etc. almost every game. It's awfully nice to have a heavy 1-2 punch at the top of the rotation in the post season so you have a chance to win a low scoring game...

Well this is true.

Generally good pitchers come available for trade right up to the deadline. Until then, maybe Pearson is delivering SP2 quality innings (limited innings admittedly), or SWR is elevated and delivers like Guzman in 1991.

Options for an SP2 do not end when the season starts. Having said that, I doubt Brantley is the last domino.

Mark Feinsand

@Feinsand

Per source, the deal between the Blue Jays and Michael Brantley is not done. The Blue Jays remain very interested and in the mix - along with other clubs - but there has not been an agreement between the two sides.

Blue Jays official refutes my earlier tweet on source re: 3 yr deal. “The team remains interested in Michael Brantley but there is no deal currently in place.”

In itself those (Brantley and Springer) are 2 very good acquisitions. However, I hope this will not end up with Gurriel Jr being shipped out for a pitcher. You just don't replace a very good young player with an older one going into the final years of his carreer. Let Grichuck be the bait, add one-sided Tellez and a prospect in order to bring the starter or the solid 3rd baseman we need. Brantley won't be able to play the artificial Rogers Center surface every day, he'll end up sonner or later at DH, and we already have 3 potential DH (Vlad, Tellez, Kirk). I expect a significant trade for a 3rd baseman and a starter before long simply because Atkins can't let the Jays go into spring training with 5 regular outfielders, no 3rd baseman and 2 holes in the starting rotation. If no trades are coming, will Gurriel play 3rd? What will become with Hernandez? Things are just getting interesting.

this is kinda weird considering rosenthal said there was an agreement an hour ago

Hazel wasn't the only one to report it though, practically everyone important confirmed it (Ken, Passan, Heyman, Sherman). So either they all blindly followed Hazel or they heard the same thing. Either way, hope this gets done.

Ken doesn't blindly follow anyone for anything. Not Hazel f***ing Mae. I don't think he would report on this without having heard something himself.

Ken Rosenthal

@Ken_Rosenthal

Now hearing same as @Feinsand and @JeffPassan: No agreement yet between Blue Jays and Brantley. Two sides remain in discussions. Apologies for being among those who reported deal prematurely.

Guess that it's just the physical that isn't done yet.

If a deal was in place they would just say "there is an agreement pending a physical". Looks like someone got bad info and they're the same source for all of these people.

Even MLB had an article up on it. Maybe there was a last minute dispute in the language on the deal or something, and they're just rewriting it.

Where's that f***ing Gray 'Darvish' dude?

Atkins is probably being an Alpha Boss - forcing Brantley to accept the 3rd year as a club option for the right to play on this amazing beisbol team.

They always put “(source)” next to the titles at least
