Nah. I’m only half-defending. I’m just saying for instance if Stroman was accused of the more common typical DV incident, people would be like “oh, should’ve seen this coming, the guy is a Grade A douche bag”…

 

Is that really fair judging on Twitter activity and public comments? Prob not but it’s the reality

Umm because it's 1983, and chasing/creating records also mean something to fans and franchises?

 

I don't get this comment. Are you going to mock the leading "science" of centuries past of alchemy and using leeches as a medical cure as well?

 

Pete Rose has a perfectly valid point. Striking out sucks. The Jays managed to hit bombs while striking out the least this year. Gallo should be better.

He's suggesting that if he were so s***** at one component of baseball that he would consider killing himself. I'm suggesting he was s***** at several components of baseball by 1983 (and was one of the worst defensive players in baseball for several years). I wonder if he considered killing himself then...I wonder if he even considered retirement. Did he consider killing himself after being charged with 2 counts of tax evasion, or after spending time in jail? How about after he went broke due to his gambling addiction?

 

I think it's a bit much for Pete Rose to go throwing stones at a quality major league ball player (or anyone for that matter). He's a well above average hitter coming off a 3.5 WAR season. What's the threshold for strikeouts where one wouldn't consider killing themselves? Is it 184? If Pete Rose was Mike Trout - would he consider killing himself then?

 

I'm too young to remember, but why did the Phillies continue to play him full time? Were they so s***** that it didn't matter and they wanted him to break the hits record? I always suspected that Rose was self centered and was chasing the record himself, but I could be wrong.

Too young to remember as well, but stats-scouting it, looks like he did bounce back after the -1.7 WAR season and posted 2 +0.8 WAR seasons after the bad one, and had a couple of positive WAR seasons before the bad one. So 4 of the 5 years between 40 and 44 he was worth playing.

 

Chasing records but could still help a team as a part time player.

Just seems odd that a 1st baseman who hit 6 home runs over 7 seasons was still a starter at the ML level in the early 1980's.

I was really hoping they'd hang on to Marcus Thames just based on how much the Yankees offense underperformed and how much their fans hated him and wanted him gone.

Digging a bit deeper maybe it was a fiasco that cost the Reds a division title.

The Reds had Eric Davis and Dave Parker. Davis was unquestionably ready by 1984 having torn up aa and aaa. By today's standards he would of been a super prospect. He played 50 games in 84 and 85 but was sent down to the minors for long stints. Struggled a little in 85 but probably would of been a 4 orf 5 WAR player over 150. I don't think he was injured those years.

 

Without Rose, could have moved Parker to 1b (even though he was still a good outfielder) and played Davis full time. Instead Eric Davis missed a couple hundred games even though he was clearly ready.

 

That probably cost Cinci 3 wins a year in 1984 and 85, and it mattered in 85.

He also had a .395 OBP in his second the last season, so it's not like he was useless for multiple straight years at the end.

Also, Carter Hawkins named Cubs new GM. Well sort of...

 

Eleven months after Jed Hoyer was promoted from general manager to Cubs president of baseball operations in the wake of Theo Epstein’s decision to step down, the team has settled on a new general manager. The Cubs announced Friday that they’ve hired Indians assistant general manager Carter Hawkins as the 16th general manager in franchise history. Hoyer will still lead the team’s baseball operations department, but Hawkins will work closely alongside him and serve as the No. 2 executive in the team’s baseball operations hierarchy.

 

“I am thrilled to bring Carter into our organization,” Hoyer said in today’s press release. “He has earned a fantastic reputation as a leader through hard work, open-mindedness, humility and intelligence. I enjoyed getting to know him throughout the interview process, and it quickly became clear that we share the same passion for team building. I look forward to partnering with him to build the next great Cubs team.”

 

Though Hawkins is only 37 years old, he already has 14 years of experience working in Cleveland’s front office, working his way up the ranks from an internship to being the team’s player development director in 2014, and then a promotion to assistant GM in 2016. He’ll now join a Cubs organization that has made no secret of its desire to upgrade its farm system and player development operations.

Certainly a big blow. The guy's dynamite in the PS too. They have good young arms in Valdez, Garcia and Urquidy. f*** the Bosox.

What happened to Matt Barnes? left off Boston's roster. Has he been f***ed since he pitched in like 3 straight games v. the Jays?

 

Yeah, I believe there's something up with his arm, did he s*** the bed following that?
