Trade with them for Arrieta and Kyle Hendricks and then release Arrieta

 

Costs more $$ this year but then you have a reliable cost controlled #2 starter and taking the garbage contract off their hands lessens the trade capital required to get him

 

Edit: nvm. It will only cost them 3M to dump Arrieta at this point. No big deal for them financially

They absolutely love him in Chicago, that would still be a tough sell for the fans. I was at the game when he returned to Wrigley as a member of the Phillies, got a massive ovation.

Hendricks has been good hittin' this year, I'd be very hesitant to give up the necessary haul to acquire him even with Arrieta thrown into the deal. Guys with lower velocity such as Hendricks just have so little margin for error that if anything is off they end up getting lit up.
