Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted May 12, 2021 Posted May 12, 2021 Tsutsugo has never shown an ability to hit major league pitching so I wouldn't really consider it a bounceback if he eventually figures it out. Hopefully for his sake Yoshi is willing to accept a minor league assignment to give himself a chance to figure things out against lesser competition. Several of the Korean/Japanese players arrived at the wrong time. Many struggle with the higher velocity in north america. These guys would have dominated back in the '90's when velocity wasn't nearly as high.

That's what I mean, don't be a pedant same difference, he can also just go back home, he's a star over there. We'll see soon, I think he takes a minor league deal with MLB incentives.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted May 12, 2021 Posted May 12, 2021 And theres still people that want pitchers to hit lol So Harvey's line isn't even as good as it looks if some of the strikeouts were like that FFS
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted May 12, 2021 Posted May 12, 2021 So Harvey's line isn't even as good as it looks if some of the strikeouts were like that FFS NL pitchers get free K's all the time, bro.

max silver Old-Timey Member Posted May 12, 2021 Posted May 12, 2021 T. Walker good again 1 hit 0 runs over 5 innings so far Obviously this is with the benefit of hindsight, but it feels like the Jays front office missed a bit of an opportunity to solidify the rotation on the cheap by passing on signing Walker. He signed for relative peanuts all things considered, and was vocal in expressing his desire to stay with the organization. Of course the early results aren't bulletproof, he won't keep up the .226 BABIP forever and xERA is alot higher than actual ERA so far, so it's very possible he's been the beneficiary of good batted ball fortune so far. His stuff seems to have ticked up a fair bit as he's added a tick of velocity and he's striking out batters at a career high clip as well, but with the new deadened ball it's hard to say how much of the new success is new offseason training methods and how much of it is attributable to the new baseball. Atkins is on the record as wanting to provide opportunities for the young starters, with Pearson, Manoah, Hatch and Kay as obvious younger candidates. And they were looking to give Roark a chance to rebound as well, but with the rash of injuries and continued failure of Roark the lack of another starter acquisition has really hammered the bullpen early on.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted May 12, 2021 Posted May 12, 2021 I believe I said this last time someone said "the stupid FO should have signed Walker - f***ing idiots" - He pitched 67 innings over the previous 3 seasons. - In the very few innings he pitched, he was solid, not specular by any means. - His 'stuff' isn't very good (this isn't Danny Salazar, who's stuff is incredible when healthy). - He ended up getting a 3 year deal! He seemingly 'settled' for a 3 year deal with the Mets. For all we know, he was asking the Jays for 4 years, or 3 years at $30M+ I mean there's a chance the Mets somehow outbid themselves or something - but I have to imagine the Jays were rightfully looking for a 1 year deal with a 2nd year option or something like that and thus were nowhere near what Walker valued himself at. He's walking 4 per inning right now - we should revisit this in about 6 weeks and then again in about 18 months to see if we still regret it.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted May 12, 2021 Posted May 12, 2021 Also if it was Ray or Walker or Kluber or Paxton or ... Insert another starter who got a short term deal... and not mutiple guys I was always OK with it being Ray at 8M Roark was already signed on for the season unfortunately and was going to get a rotation spot unless injured. That's the much bigger travesty both because of suckage and the 12M guarantee that they were stuck with. I don't think they were ever going to add multiple SPs via free agency. They probably explored and bailed on the trade market after SD went nuts.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted May 12, 2021 Posted May 12, 2021 Im honestly surprised they dumped Roark so early. I thought for sure he’d get at least a month in the rotation, and im surprised they let him go considering the injuries. Not that I’m complaining. I guess i’d rather throw Kay and Stripling out there instead, at least there’s some upside.

With the large cash outlay spent on position players in the offseason it feels like just a little more spending on the rotation would have made for a far more complete team. Perhaps the budget was basically tapped out, or a little extra room was left for deadline additions, but seeing how little guys like Odorizzi and Walker signed for left me feeling pretty surprised. Even if everything would have broken perfectly the rotation still looked like an obvious area of weakness in an otherwise very well built ballclub. The position player core for the year is very solid other than the need for better infield depth, and the bullpen looked like it had a chance to really lock down the opposition, even after the loss of Yates this was still the case. But the rotation is all that was remaining in building a team which was built to truly compete right away in 2021. Maybe Pearson figures things out with his command and Manoah can help the team sooner rather than later, but neither of those looks to be sure things.

King Old-Timey Member Posted May 13, 2021 Posted May 13, 2021 Is anyone watching the Dodgers/Mariners game? The Mariners were in a close game, and they inexplicably left Will Vest in during the middle innings for way too long. 5 straight Dodgers batters have reached and it's now 5-1 instead of 2-1. I feel like they just threw the game. What is Servais thinking?
