Baseball is such a weird sport. Mendick generated like 4 swinging strikes in one inning throwing a 60 mph fastball.

For a SS/2B/3B infielder, 60 mph is a really weak fastball.. some 14 year olds can blow that outta the water. We’re talking about a grown ass man professional athlete that weighs 195 lbs throwing 60 mph? Are we sure it wasn’t 80.

Edit:

okay he’s not even trying to throw with velo.

I don't even know what you call it when a guy just tosses up up there repeatedly at 60ish without really trying to amp it up.

I'd call it a guy trying to ensure he doesn't throw out his arm on meaningless pitches. I hope he generated some movement on the ball if he got 4 swinging misses for the hitters sake lol.

Maybe Zoinks can be successful after all...

Typical Rays devil magic

In that video, the broadcaster says 'the threshold to do this is 6'. Is there an actual rule on this? or is he making some bad joke or something?

It's amazing to see how little effort it takes him to throw mid 50's. As a U11 coach, I'm fairly sure a lot of my kids are throwing mid 50's with max effort.

"Position players pitching -- Position players are allowed to pitch only if a game goes to extra innings, or if their team is winning or losing by more than six runs. During normal circumstances in a nine-inning game, only the team's 13 designated pitchers -- or two-way players -- are allowed to pitch."

Had no idea that 6 run rule existed

Me neither. Seems dumb, but I guess they are trying to protect the integrity of the viewing experience? Although I love seeing position players come in to pitch.

Neither did I. Apparently is began last season.

Not that it makes much difference. A position player pitching in a 5-run game would probably be very rare regardless of a specific rule disallowing it.

Athletics with the 0-6 start have now won their last 10 games in a row and are sitting at first place in the division.

Truly a wild ride

I knew that wouldn't hold, that team is too good.

I find it kind of shocking based on the product that's on the field (strikeouts galore and few BIP). It would be interesting to see the demographics on the viewership. Is it a younger generation?

LOL all of Manfred's throwing random s*** on the wall actually worked. Or at least that's how the MLB office is going to interpret this data. My guess is that every season that follows some half-assed 60 game pandemic season is going to do quite well.

Are you talking about the MLB.com data above? The one that talks about results over the past 20 years? or am I missing something?

That's interesting.

Excellent now work with the cable networks to provide a solution for people to legally stream teams in their market through MLB.tv

EDIT: also why isn’t MLB network part of the subscription? They should figure out a way to include that

Yes. Though it occurred to me after typing this out that this increase in viewership could just be cannibalizing traditional cable sources.
