So Sugano is taking this down to the wire (5 PM ET) and wants to match or beat the Kikuchi deal.

The Kikuchi deal is:

$10M

$16M

$17M

Then four $16.5M team options that must be exercised together BUT there is also a player option for year 4 at $13M.

So the guarantee was 4/$56M.

Seems like a lot for Sugano mostly considering his age. Kikuchi was 28 in year 1 of this contract, Sugano will be 31.

In terms of NPB performance, Sugano's stats are better than Kikuchi's career stats across the board but Kikuchi had a couple of strong years before coming over including a 2017 where is K rate was way up and his walk rate was way down. There was a narrative of stuff improvement for Kikuchi IIRC and MLB teams may have liked his ability to translate over because of his stuff.

Sugano might also be willing to accept something like 3/$39 from an MLB team and this is all just firm negotiation. We will see!

Passan saying Gimenez would be part of the deal if it happens. Wow. That would be a big domino for this off season.

Hopefully that eases them off Springer..a little at least

Prob will follow the SD footprint though. Bastards

If this happens, I'm already setting myself up for a huge disappointing offseason. Why the f*** can't we have nice things...

Mets close to getting Lindor from Indians, sources confirm to The Athletic. Right-hander Ryan Wolf, Mets’ second-round pick in 2019, is one of players who would go back to Cleveland. Andres Gimenez also in deal, per @JeffPassan.

This breaks my heart. We gave those f***ers Donaldson for free and they cant even try to hook us up with that package...

It's obvious to me that we were able to pay the prospect price, but unable to agree to an extension with Lindor.

Toronto is one of the few teams apparently willing to spend money this offseason. They'll end up doing it.

Lets see how this offseason goes but if we expect to get big name players for bargain prices, we might as well become the Tampa Bay Rays.

Lindor and Carrasco?

No way the Jays front office wasn't trying to obtain the two of them as well...

If this fell through for us because Lindor was demanding a ridiculous extension I have no problem with it.

*spending money only if we get big name players for rock bottom prices. I won't continue to hold my breath...

The upside here is that this probably takes the Mets out of the market for Bauer and Lemahieu. I suspect they probably have the money and desire to add Springer on top of what they have done.

If the Jays couldn't land an extension for Lindor I wouldn't be mad about this. I'll take DJL and some pitching please.

Can’t really get mad at passing on Lindor, there are like 5 all star free agent shortstops next offseason that we can sign for cash without giving up prospects.

Full trade, per sources:

To Mets: Francisco Lindor and Carlos Carrasco.

To Indians: Amed Rosario, Andrés Giménez, Josh Wolf, Isaiah Greene.

Sounds like what's known of the deal so far is Rosario, Gimenez, Wolf, and Greene going to Cleveland.

I would imagine Springer is still a top priority for them, but Lindor is going to require a huge extension and Cano's money comes back on the books in 2022, so curious how much Cohen is going to be comfortable adding to future payroll.

It's all assuming that all those free agents will remain unsigned. Lindor will probably be taken off the list and I'm sure many others will be too prior to then.

Don't pull a Raptors hoping something will be available in the future and plan your current moves around that. Just not a good way of managing.

And we're pretty much dealing with one other buyer in this market, there will be many more buyers next offseason. There will always be an excuse for us to not make the big move.
