The Iceman Verified Member Posted November 30, 2020 Posted November 30, 2020 What is everyone thinking for best way to get value deals this off season? Get ahead of things and aggressively pursue the top targets? Slow play the FA market? Trade from teams looking to cut salary? Target players that get non-tendered?

If you're looking for value, it isn't the first approach on your list.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2020 Posted November 30, 2020 What is everyone thinking for best way to get value deals this off season? Get ahead of things and aggressively pursue the top targets? Slow play the FA market? Trade from teams looking to cut salary? Target players that get non-tendered? I think the Jays are offering what they perceive to be value deals to all major free agents they're interested in and telling them its first come first serve like the Gausman deal. Then for the players they really really like, they've probably told them to circle back if they have a better offer that Toronto can match or beat, assuming they haven't spent elsewhere already. Personally, I think that would be the best approach to free agency since you have no idea who is really interested in you. Only issue with that approach is you could get stuck with a Morales deal early in free agency and then later find out there were better players available for the same money. So let's hope we only commit unless we deem the player to be one of the best availablr at their positions in the market.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2020 Posted November 30, 2020 (edited) If we do this, does that mean Biggio at 3rd? Yuck! Or maybe Biggio would be part of a potential trade because I don't see any position he'd be a Plus defender at other than 2B? Edited November 30, 2020 by Jays24
RobinThicc Verified Member Posted November 30, 2020 Posted November 30, 2020 Brantley and wong would be disappointing, so I expect that to happen lol
The Iceman Verified Member Posted November 30, 2020 Posted November 30, 2020 Wong would be a solid add. A gold glove level 2nd baseman is a nice step to start shoring up the D. He is a nice scrappy ball player that will do what is needed from him to win. Biggio would still play some 2nd, 3rd, OF. His bat and versatility is his strength. As long as he hits he will find lots of ABs. If the Jays are serious about adding a top SS having Wong @ 2nd, and Bichette @ 3rd sure makes things a lot better.
Laika Community Moderator Posted November 30, 2020 Posted November 30, 2020 Really warming up to the idea of Kolten Wong. I know he's not sexy but runs are runs - whether they are prevented or driven in. 2.69 fWAR per 150 games in his career but significantly better recently: 3.44 fWAR per 150 games since the start of 2017 I guess STL platooned him at times so his WAR rate might be an overrepresentation of his talent as a full time starter... but Toronto could and probably would sit him against a lot of LHP too. And he's a mid-market free agent so he would hopefully be a secondary signing. Springer + Wong and the Blue Jays have a top 5 set of position players, maybe top 3. Player(s) - rounded FG WAR projection C - Jansen/Kirk - 3.0 1B - Vlad - 3.5 2B - Wong - 2.0 SS - Bo - 4.0 3B - Biggio - 3.0 LF - Gurriel - 2.0 CF - Springer - 4.0 RF - Grichuk - 1.5 DH - Teoscar - 1.5
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2020 Posted November 30, 2020 If Vlad comes into camp in shape do they try to work him back into 3B or has that ship sailed?
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2020 Posted November 30, 2020 If Vlad comes into camp in shape do they try to work him back into 3B or has that ship sailed? He would be a 1B, 3B, DH... probably not many games at 3B, 30 maybe? I'm sure there will be times when Vlad at 3B, Rowdy at 1B, Teoscar at DH will make sense. Vlad being in shape would do more at the plate than in the field, in any event.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2020 Posted November 30, 2020 Biggio is a plus defender at 2B? He was 10th in DRS and 9th in Fangraph's Def rankings last year (for second basemen). Short season but yes, he was very solid defensively at 2nd.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2020 Posted November 30, 2020 Biggio is a plus defender at 2B? Considering hes young and has a chance to grow, i think 2B would be the only position he could be a plus defender at. Obviously the sample size is small and who knows how he improves or regresses down the line.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2020 Posted November 30, 2020 If Vlad comes into camp in shape do they try to work him back into 3B or has that ship sailed? Think he should be our primary 1B and a backup 3B. If in shape, i think he has a better chance there than Biggio imo.

Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2020 Posted November 30, 2020 If they do sign him, I hope it's no longer than 2-3 years. My guess it would be at minimum 5 years for him. That wouldnt be so bad as he'd be expiring when a lot of our core guys would be up for their big extensions.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2020 Posted November 30, 2020 My attempts to get Morosi’s name and rumors banned on this forum will never die. He’s not a legit source.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2020 Posted November 30, 2020 Not believing any of the Springer rumors. Trollosi knows what he’s doing. The Jays have a large online presence. All he has to do is put #bluejays and he’ll get a lot of engagement and possibly radio interviews. Every year people fall for it. We need Shapiro to pull a Steve Cohen and roast him on Twitter.

Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2020 Posted November 30, 2020 What are these opinions based on? Watching him throw from 3B is painful. Its like hes short arming it from there and doesnt trust his arm, either due to ability or confidence. Doesnt take much to see he doesn't fit there at the moment.

I could definitely see the Jays signing Springer. Of all the "impact" free agents available, he seems most likely based on need and likelihood of signing (DJ loves NY, Bauer is unpredictable, and Realmuto makes more sense for the Mets). But Morosi's sources are the voices in his head. I'd wait for someone credible to bring it up.

Toronto's outfield currently consists of Randal Grichuk, Teoscar Hernandez, and Lourdes Gurriel Jr., and one of them would need to be relegated to the bench or possibly traded to make room for Springer's potential addition. There's easily 400-500 AB's available for a 4th OF'er in any given season. You don't just trade one away because 3 oUtFiEiLdErS...

I think a lot of people's logic seems to be sign Springer to be your CF. Then either Gurriel or Teo (probably Gurriel) can be used as a main piece with other prospects for a Lindor trade with an extension. Thats my dream scenario with the lineup anyways lol. CF Springer 3B Bo SS Lindor 1B Vladdy (skinny vlad will belong here we hope) RF Teo 2B Biggio LF Grichuk DH Tellez C Jansen/Kirk By 2022, let Martin take Grichuk's spot and see how Groshans fits in.
