Blue Jays acquire Jonathan Villar for Griffin Conine

Travis Shaw signed a contract with the Blue Jays to be the regular 1st baseman and DH when Tellez would be at first. I believe there's also some other incentives in Shaw contract for some additional money. Now the problem came when Vlad Jr was moved to 1st base and everyone knows that Shaw was originally a 3rd baseman when he first came up with the Red Sox and after in Milwaukee. There's a good reason that Villar hasn't seen any action at 3rd base for 4 years now.

Not specifically mentioned in Shaw, or any player's contract, is the fact that if they suck they will be benched, DFA'd or otherwise not given playing time. It doesn't really need to be written down, most players would understand that.

I'm fine with Shaw against RHP. Might as well see if that EV/hard hit rate can turn into better production with more PA's. Just bat him lower in the lineup. Villar should play 3B against LHP once Bichette is back at SS.

The moment we signed Shaw I was waiting for the other shoe to drop. You know the right handed platoon partner he should have been paired with but never came. A lot of people here were convinced Shaw was going to turn back into the player he was with the Brewers. Outside of his exit velocity numbers hes been pretty awful and in and out of the lineup. Not ready to throw him away. But he should not be hitting third and he should not be facing Lefties ever. And have no problem with Villar playing over him assuming Villar is hitting well.

I'm in the camp of "get your worst hitters fewer at bats". I wouldn't hit him 9th, probably ~7th. What needs to happen is removing Shaw from the 3rd spot, that's just an awful spot for him right now. Villar should be batting before guys like Shaw, Panik, Espinal, and both catchers (depending upon who remains with the team when all the roster moves are complete...) He's got a semi-respectable OBP, just a bit lower than his career average, but he's not a guy who "gets on base" at an impressive clip, so even if you buy the "turn the lineup over" argument, it's not some kind of automatic baserunner for Biggio at the top of the order.

 

I mean, we all know that Chuckles will be batting him leadoff, but we're not talking about what history's greatest monster will do with the lineup, just what should be done.

What’s disappointing is he’s making the same bone headed base running and defensive mistakes as our kids, when he should be leading by example.

 

He looked awful but I’m willing to give him some rope. It can’t be easy to play against your previous team immediately after being traded.

Yeah I joked that he makes me miss Panik, but he’s usually decent despite the stupid mistakes. Hopefully he settles down. Charles needs to bat him lower in the lineup though.

I always wondered how a guy who put up 6 WAR over 2 years, and coming off a career year got DFA'd. Or waived. Or whatever. Especially by a team like Baltimore that didn't have anyone better.

 

Wonder if the bone headed decision is why? Teams must have some internal metric that values Villar less than what fangraphs/baseball reference does.

 

I am giving him some rope as well, but his perceived value is less than his actual value. Its weird.

Every time he sac bunts or does something equally peculiar/irritating like 'lengthening his lineup by putting one of his best players in the 8 hole, guys here come up with new 'derogatory' ways to reference the ass-clown. At the time of the trade we had no timetable on a Bichette return and Joe Panik was penciled in as a starter while hitting under the mendoza line. Dan Vogelbach was our primary pinch hitter. We gave a long shot prospect for a utility infielder who put up 4 WAR last season. If it doesn't work out, whatever, but s***ing on the front office's intentions here is dumb
