EastCoaster Verified Member Posted September 1, 2020 Posted September 1, 2020 Travis Shaw signed a contract with the Blue Jays to be the regular 1st baseman and DH when Tellez would be at first. I believe there's also some other incentives in Shaw contract for some additional money. Now the problem came when Vlad Jr was moved to 1st base and everyone knows that Shaw was originally a 3rd baseman when he first came up with the Red Sox and after in Milwaukee. There's a good reason that Villar hasn't seen any action at 3rd base for 4 years now.

Not specifically mentioned in Shaw, or any player's contract, is the fact that if they suck they will be benched, DFA'd or otherwise not given playing time. It doesn't really need to be written down, most players would understand that.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2020 Posted September 1, 2020 I'm fine with Shaw against RHP. Might as well see if that EV/hard hit rate can turn into better production with more PA's. Just bat him lower in the lineup. Villar should play 3B against LHP once Bichette is back at SS.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2020 Posted September 1, 2020 The moment we signed Shaw I was waiting for the other shoe to drop. You know the right handed platoon partner he should have been paired with but never came. A lot of people here were convinced Shaw was going to turn back into the player he was with the Brewers. Outside of his exit velocity numbers hes been pretty awful and in and out of the lineup. Not ready to throw him away. But he should not be hitting third and he should not be facing Lefties ever. And have no problem with Villar playing over him assuming Villar is hitting well. Shaw’s still under control which is hard to believe because it feels like hes been around forever but he’s likely to get non tendered at this point.
The Iceman Verified Member Posted September 1, 2020 Posted September 1, 2020 Me, too. If he wasn't the son of a former MLB player, I wouldn't give two shits for him. EXACTLY, and if he wasn't the son of Mr Marlin neither would Florida.

Dokken Verified Member Posted September 2, 2020 Posted September 2, 2020 I'm in the camp of "get your worst hitters fewer at bats". I wouldn't hit him 9th, probably ~7th. What needs to happen is removing Shaw from the 3rd spot, that's just an awful spot for him right now. Villar should be batting before guys like Shaw, Panik, Espinal, and both catchers (depending upon who remains with the team when all the roster moves are complete...) He's got a semi-respectable OBP, just a bit lower than his career average, but he's not a guy who "gets on base" at an impressive clip, so even if you buy the "turn the lineup over" argument, it's not some kind of automatic baserunner for Biggio at the top of the order. I mean, we all know that Chuckles will be batting him leadoff, but we're not talking about what history's greatest monster will do with the lineup, just what should be done. LOL. Chuckles Buntoyo right up there with Mao, and Stalin (oh and that Austrian guy)

TheDragon Verified Member Posted September 3, 2020 Posted September 3, 2020 Griffin Conine for Emilio Bonifacio 2.0
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted September 3, 2020 Posted September 3, 2020 Villar is fitting right in with the 2020 Blue Jays and the Montoyo style.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted September 3, 2020 Posted September 3, 2020 What’s disappointing is he’s making the same bone headed base running and defensive mistakes as our kids, when he should be leading by example. He looked awful but I’m willing to give him some rope. It can’t be easy to play against your previous team immediately after being traded.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 3, 2020 Posted September 3, 2020 Yeah I joked that he makes me miss Panik, but he’s usually decent despite the stupid mistakes. Hopefully he settles down. Charles needs to bat him lower in the lineup though.

I always wondered how a guy who put up 6 WAR over 2 years, and coming off a career year got DFA'd. Or waived. Or whatever. Especially by a team like Baltimore that didn't have anyone better. Wonder if the bone headed decision is why? Teams must have some internal metric that values Villar less than what fangraphs/baseball reference does. I am giving him some rope as well, but his perceived value is less than his actual value. Its weird.
Dokken Verified Member Posted September 3, 2020 Posted September 3, 2020 Say what you will about the Great Leap Forward, Mao wouldn't be sac bunting so damn much... comedy gold Let's just hope Chuckie and the boys don't win the WS, or we will be stuck with him for at least one more season ...... oh wait, ........ J/K - they aren't winning this year - I could see them pulling a 1st round upset then going cold and s***ing the bed in the 2nd round.
Ryu In My House Verified Member Posted September 3, 2020 Posted September 3, 2020 Right? Also, who the f*** is Chucky?
Dokken Verified Member Posted September 4, 2020 Posted September 4, 2020 Right? Also, who the f*** is Chucky? Chuckie would be José Carlos Montoyo Díaz (Charlie Montoyo). Chuck is to Charles/Charlie as Bob is to Robert.

Dokken Verified Member Posted September 4, 2020 Posted September 4, 2020 (edited) Okay, I never heard him referred to as Chucky I guess I should hang around the front office more. yeah I think it's just a BJMB THING. Every time he sac bunts or does something equally peculiar/irritating like 'lengthening his lineup by putting one of his best players in the 8 hole, guys here come up with new 'derogatory' ways to reference the ass-clown. Then again, if he wins it all, we will all just declare 4-D chess, with Charlie as the Champ and Canadian hero!! Edited September 5, 2020 by Dokken
TheDragon Verified Member Posted September 13, 2020 Posted September 13, 2020 I know he's supposed to be better than this at least but Villar is the worst infielder I've seen in a Blue Jays uniform since Emilio Bonifacio. Who were the geniuses recommending this dumb trade?
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted September 13, 2020 Posted September 13, 2020 I wanted Andrelton Simmons.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted September 13, 2020 Posted September 13, 2020 I wanted Andrelton Simmons. Apparently he didn’t want us.

Who were the geniuses recommending this dumb trade? At the time of the trade we had no timetable on a Bichette return and Joe Panik was penciled in as a starter while hitting under the mendoza line. Dan Vogelbach was our primary pinch hitter. We gave a long shot prospect for a utility infielder who put up 4 WAR last season. If it doesn't work out, whatever, but s***ing on the front office's intentions here is dumb

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2020 Posted September 14, 2020 Apparently he didn’t want us. Would you in his shoes? He's a current starting SS who would be filling in for an up and coming star. I suppose I'd have moved Bichette to 3B and keep Simmons at SS but it probably wasn't a chance he wanted to take.
