Rowdy is not a Shatkins player. Not sure how much of a factor this is, but Rowdy is only one of a handful of position players we have still from AA era. We just DFA'd Alford who was another one. Guerrero JR + Jansen + Davis are the other guys. Obviously Vladdy is still a cornerstone and I don't see Jansen going anywhere anytime soon, but Rowdy and Davis both probably aren't long for this team.

 

Also Rowdy just isn't that good.

 

I think this move has some upside. I really like that Vogelbach can take walks. Got him for free. Hard to dislike this.

At least with Drury he can play all the infield positions decently, Dozier does nothing to fix the issue of our backup shortstop not being able to put up a positive WRC+. If you were to lose Espinal and Panik has been removed from the roster then who is left to play short? Tejada or Kevin Smith aren't exactly confidence inspiring options either.

Yeah they would need someone with more defensive versatility than Dozier if it meant cutting Panik or Drury. They already have a bad defensive team.

Dozier played short his first year. Panik's first game at short stop was this year. A Dozier for Panik move doesn't change anything. It just gets rid of Panik. If anything, Dozier has more experience playing short at the big league level.

Dozier hasn't played short stop since 2012, and a quick glance at his statcast 2nd base numbers show him to be a well below average defender at second base, so it's hard to imagine him being anything other than terrible defensively at short.

There's no player less exciting in baseball than a fat 1B. People at least expect Vlad to hit like a MVP candidate someday, so you can live with that, but that's the outlier, not the norm. Players like Tellez and Vogelbach are hard to get excited about. If they hit, then great, but they have to hit consistently year to year because they literally provide nothing else.

I think you need to collect a lot of these 26-28ish guys and let them sort it out. Unless you have a super-computer that knows how to choose which guy, but I don't think they have that yet.

Eddie had a .160 average and a .593 OPS after 100 ABs in 2018 and he finished with an .810 OPS for the season and was close to .900 the rest of the way.

 

I'd rather have Eddie than Vogelbach, but we've already made the move. It would cost us a little more money, but there's way more upside.

Dozier isn't a short stop, but either is Panik. He can fill in for a few spot starts. I'd much rather see Dozier at 3rd today than Drury. Dozier is an easy replacement for either Drury or Panik. He's league min and has put up 23 WAR in his career. Even last year he was a league average bat and put up 1.7 WAR. That's a lot better than Panik or Drury IMO.
