saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2020 Posted August 15, 2020 Boston has the most losses in the league. This season is so great. It's crazy tight across the league. When you have teams that you thought would be cellar dwellers with above .500 records what does that mean for the trade deadline in 16 days!

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2020 Posted August 17, 2020 Verdugo just stole 3rd base with 2 outs and the tying run at the plate. He made it, but it seems fundamentals are lacking around baseball right now.

BTS Community Moderator Posted August 17, 2020 Posted August 17, 2020 I wonder how this plays out. Cleveland is a playoff team, and Clev and Plesac are critical pieces. Holding them out isn't productive.

Holding them out isn't productive. Oliver Perez threatened to opt out if they weren't demoted. There were other players of the same mind set. They are critical pieces, but Carrasco just recovered from leukemia last year. That puts him in a higher risk category for Covid. He could have opted out and been paid. Players are balancing the desire to win and the desire to keep their team mate safe. The latter has won out and guys are pissed at Clev and Plesac.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2020 Posted August 17, 2020 Options exist for a reason, Cleveland is fully within their rights to do it punitively or for any other reason. Those two are f***ing ignorant clowns who deserve to be smacked.
Laika Community Moderator Posted August 17, 2020 Posted August 17, 2020 (edited) Tigers announce that Tarik Skubal, Casey Mize, and Isaac Paredes will all debut this week. Wow. None have played in AAA. Could have easily gamed service time on them next year. Edited August 17, 2020 by Laika

Could have easily gamed service time on them next year. On one hand, I wouldn't mind if the Jays did this with Kirk who is probably an upgrade at DH today over anyone the Jays currently have, but the thought of Kirk sitting on the bench 5 days a week so Panik and Tellez can play instead is enough to end that idea for me. On that note, I hope more teams, including the Jays, stop gaming service time going forward. We can discuss the merits of doing it for development, but players getting paid earlier in their career is definitely needed in this sport.

I hate this system and no one seems incentivized to change it, so I hope teams like Detroit, San Diego, KC, NYM start applying social pressure on other teams to stop service time manipulation. People might call them dumb or badly run but I'd be very pleased if their goal is a cultural change.

It was always going to happen at aome point I wonder if Pujols himself is interested in chasing 700 HRs or any other counting stats. He's been cooked since 2016 (which is really sad for such a stud).
glory Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2020 Posted August 17, 2020 Is it time to jjat release Pujols and eat the salary? It was always going to happen at aome point You could have asked this question three years ago and it still would have applied. Angels would rather keep him and lose wins than eat his salary and get an upgrade. I know it’s a s*** ton of money, but still. Gonna have to pay it regardless. Might as well not let it hurt you on the field.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2020 Posted August 17, 2020 The Pujols situation is weird. Got to wonder if there is something in the contract that incentivizes LAA to keep him on the team/field.

The Orioles are still paying Chris Davis $23M/year to put up a 4 wRC+, so I guess some people just don't learn.
Laika Community Moderator Posted August 17, 2020 Posted August 17, 2020 The Pujols situation is weird. Got to wonder if there is something in the contract that incentivizes LAA to keep him on the team/field. It contains a ten year "personal services" option which will pay Pujols $10M to work for the organization after the contract ends (a front office or coaching role). That at least makes it a bit more awkward to cut him. There are milestone considerations too.

It was always going to happen at aome point not until they get some kind of a rotation. He's not really holding them back from winning a world series so might as well wait until the last possible minute to actually upgrade that position
