saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2020 Posted September 12, 2020 Rowdy Tellez gave a lengthy interview on "Loud Outs" this morning that I listened to on Sirius. When asked about the knee he said it's feeling better every day and he's targeting the playoffs. Maybe he isn't done for the season! When asked about Buffalo he said it sux..lol. Had nothing but great things to say about Teoscar and what a happy go lucky person he really is. Some pretty funny bits actually.

Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2020 Posted September 12, 2020 Desperately needed Bo back. Can't wait for when Teo comes back and our lineup actually looks dangerous again.
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2020 Posted September 12, 2020 Haha I didn't even realize they DFA'd McKinney, so pretty much gave us nothing for the Happ deal.

jerb Verified Member Posted September 12, 2020 Posted September 12, 2020 Mike Wilner @Wilnerness590 Charlie Montoyo tells us Teoscar Hernandez is hitting off a tee today, which is fantastic news. Also, Rowdy Tellez is riding a bike, a positive sign for a guy with a strained tendon in his knee. #Bluejays

And we got Hernandez for Liriano, so the universe balances out That was a strike out for sure, but we somehow got Hatch for David Phelps which looks like a home run. That too. And I guess we can say a lot of us are feeling pretty good about the Donaldson trade.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2020 Posted September 12, 2020 Haha I didn't even realize they DFA'd McKinney, so pretty much gave us nothing for the Happ deal. That's not true. Many in the fan base and I'm sure some people in the FO got ulcers from watching Drury. As far as the trades evening out, yes that's the theory behind filling a dartboard with a bunch of random darts. Some will miss, some will hit. The Liriano trade was particularly sweet. That was a trade for today AND tomorrow because the Pirates were being cheap asses. Remember that time when people were far more excited about Reese McGuire? lol

I actually remember think MLB may nix the trade, because you can't trade injured players. I remember Atkins saying Merryweather (the PTBNL) has an arm that would impress. For me, right now, he looks like one of our best pitchers, and has the stuff, composure and pitch mix to continue on. And he hasn't fired a lot of bullets. Hopefully that means he has put all the major injuries behind him and he is ready to contribute for years. Even before Merryweather started contributing I would get super annoyed at fans who complained we got nothing for JD. Beggars cannot be choosers.

I think a lot of people were mad that they didn't trade (or) resign him in 2017. I agree though, he was a mess when the Jays traded him and i'm glad they got something that looks pretty damn good so far.

The previous offseason was pretty clearly the time to trade him. Hindsight helps but I seem to remember it was pretty widely reported that St. Louis offered us Flaherty. I like what I see with Merryweather but Ryu/Flaherty/Pearson looks pretty good.

Slade Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2020 Posted September 14, 2020 I think given a chance McKinney could probably be a decent platoon bat but there's not much else there to like.

43211234 Verified Member Posted September 14, 2020 Posted September 14, 2020 McKinney to the Brewers means every team in the AL passed on him. Even the Orioles decided not to spend a 40-man spot on him! That's actually a bit surprising to me. There is still a chance he might become a 4th or 5th outfielder.

Hindsight helps but I seem to remember it was pretty widely reported that St. Louis offered us Flaherty. I like what I see with Merryweather but Ryu/Flaherty/Pearson looks pretty good. Randal Grichuk was also part of the deal, IIRC correctly. I also thought they should have traded JD in 2017, but I think ownership didn't want that. The Blue Jays wanted to be a big boy, and they still thought they had the roster to get some wins in 2018. Hindsight is 20/20, like you said, but I can understand why he wasn't traded in 2017. If JD was having an MVP type season in 2018, instead of the injury mess that was his season, I will bet we'd have 2-3 more decent players on the roster, or minors, now via a trade. Or nothing. Prospects are always a gamble. We may have something with Merryweather. Whos's to say we would have been better off.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted September 15, 2020 Posted September 15, 2020 Huge series, lets go boys! Getting excited already, going to be a long day at work haha.
Laika Community Moderator Posted September 16, 2020 Posted September 16, 2020 I don't hate him, I'm just capable of separating the actual talent from the name and reputation. He's a back end starter talent at this point and you can't rely on him to eat innings. A horse poop option in disguise. Pass. I know the reply will be something nonsensical like "all of those runs are Fisher's fault!" but hopefully seeing Taijuan Walker fold like a cheap lawn chair and get his depressingly mediocre pitches demolished by the Yankees has convinced a few people that he's not worth investing in after this year. It's just not a good bag of pitches. It works if you're looking for a back-end SP who you'd never want to have start a playoff game.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted September 16, 2020 Posted September 16, 2020 Ross Stripling should be getting playoff starts over Walker if he can ever regain his form.
Laika Community Moderator Posted September 16, 2020 Posted September 16, 2020 Ross Stripling should be getting playoff starts over Walker if he can ever regain his form. With the tight playoff schedule teams won't be able to rely on 3 SP like playoff teams have been able to do in years past. They will need 4, and might even have to use a 5th SP if a series goes long. Toronto really has to use Walker even if Pearson is back. If Pearson is back he might be best utilized as the second guy of a piggyback situation. Looking at the depth, if everyone is healthy... why not... 1 - Ryu 2 - Merryweather + Kay or Hatch? 3 - Ray + Anderson? 4 - Walker + Pearson? 5 - Stripling + Kay or Hatch? Any of the starters and followers could be flipped around or mixed up. Stripling, Walker, Ray, Pearson, and Anderson are all strictly not allowed to face an order for the third time. Moot point with Merryweather who won't be able to throw that many pitches anyway. I don't recall if Shoemaker has any chance of pitching again this year. Roark can sit alone in the stands and smell his own diesel engine farts.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted September 16, 2020 Posted September 16, 2020 Ross Stripling should be getting playoff starts over Walker if he can ever regain his form. None of them besides Ryu should get a playoff start but here we are lol. Pick your poison
