Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2020 Posted August 29, 2020 I must have missed this. I read the Athletic article but didn't see this part. It was an article interviewing Ken Huckabee and talking about Rochester, I think it was on Sportsnet, but I can't find it right now...

Doesn't even like he's even had a really hot streak, more of a steady incline, which I imagine is much more sustainable and better indicator of his skill level.
KevinGregg Verified Member Posted August 29, 2020 Posted August 29, 2020 The last report I read was that both He and Groshans were struggling against the more advanced pitching, so I'm going to go ahead and vote against this. https://theathletic.com/2016158/2020/08/23/with-mix-of-prospects-and-vets-blue-jays-juggle-priorities-at-alternate-site?source=user-shared-article Jordan Groshans, 20, infielder “I’ve seen Jordan make huge progress in his defence and his offence. He’s really, really engaged in his work on both of those. He still gets a little frustrated at times, but that’s expected because he’s so young and he has high expectations for himself, which we like. And, defensively, he’s making great strides. Offensively, he’s facing guys he normally wouldn’t face for another year or two up here, so hitting’s not real easy here right now with the pitching that we have here. He’s still got some growth to do.” Austin Martin, 21, infielder “Austin has been everything that he was built up to be, makeup-wise, work ethic, attitude, everything has been off the books great with him. He’s obviously got a lot to learn on both sides of the ball, but he’s probably a player that’s never really failed in his career up to now, and failure will create change and his willingness to start playing with different things. He’s in that beginning stage right now, but the way he works and the way he goes about his work, there’s a definite big-league maturity to that.”

He missed most of last year now facing more seasoned pitchers.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2020 Posted August 29, 2020 Are we worried that 20-year-old Groshans can't hit Merryweather, Patrick Murphy, and Sean Reid-Foley in the alternate training site? Not even the Red Sox, Rays, or Phillies could square up Merryweather the last two weeks, he's been ridiculous. SRF is a 6 year pro, triple-A arm and FB dialed up to 97 MPH vs Red Sox 3 days ago. Patrick Murphy was 2018 FSL pitcher of the year and throws easy 97-100 MPH with one of the nastiest curveballs in the system. Groshans has not yet played a single game in the FSL (A+).

Yeah. He's still hitting the ball at far too low a launch angle. When he sorts THAT out...

max silver Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2020 Posted August 29, 2020 Where are you getting your data? O-Swing is the same: Career: 35.7% 2020: 34.7% Barrels is up a tick from 2017/2018. We're talking about 13 barrels this year, an extremely small sample and could be he's faced more s***** pitching. The other stuff you mentioned is definitely notable. He may have tweaked something with his swing or approach that's leading to better results but he's still likely getting lucky with the fly balls. Either way, enjoy it while it lasts. My stats are taken from fangraphs and statcast. I don't think comparing a 6 year veteran players career average against his current o-swing is a very reasonable way to compare his current statistics for what it's worth. You seemed to have cherry picked the worst plate discipline numbers for Grichuk of the multiple available metrics to make your case, but by all of pitch f/x, pitch info and statcast Grichuk has set a career best marker. Perhaps a more telling stat is his o-contact percentage, this is a much more sizable increase of up to 15%, that could be behind a lot of his increased success, with less swing and miss/more foul offs etc. Grichuk hasn't lucked his way into his current numbers, he is being rewarded with results consistent with his quality of contact. His .395 woba is consistent with a .391 xwoba. He isn't simply fluking his way into a bunch of wall scraper home runs, he is making consistent hard contact and reaping the just rewards. Check out his statcast page, Grichuk ranks: 78th percentile in hard hit% 81st percentile in xwoba 90th percentile in xba 87th percentile in xslg 89th percentile in barrel %
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2020 Posted August 29, 2020 We should just throw caution to the wind and bring up Martin and see what he can do. Can't think of too many hitting prospects who skipped the minors. Edit: John olerud!

Ryu In My House Verified Member Posted August 30, 2020 Posted August 30, 2020 I would like us to get rid of Shaw, and trade for Evan Longoria. Better defensively, can still hit very well, and of course that veteran presence that is almost totally lacking. I would bat him 3rd.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2020 Posted August 30, 2020 I mean, the difference in the way the virus is contained in the US and the UK is incredibly substantial, to say the least... You're right, the UK has done a lot worse https://www.statista.com/statistics/1104709/coronavirus-deaths-worldwide-per-million-inhabitants/ I know introducing numbers to a socialist is never a winning proposition, but the US has a lot more people than the UK, so comparing total numbers doesn't really work. Just trying to help you out. I'm tired of this narrative that the US is basically hell because that means crowds for sporting events will be pushed back further than warranted. I just needed to correct this gross misinformation.

I just needed to correct this gross misinformation. I know you're banned yet again, but like... This is some brutally bad cherry picked numbers here, and that is the total since the start of the virus, and doesn't reflect that the US is getting worse, while almost every other country is getting better. This is like saying "more people were killed by Nazis than by airplane crashes" and ignoring the fact that the last person killed by a Nazi (I mean the actual German army Nazis here, not the white supremacist jackholes currently roaming around) was 75 years ago. Deaths per day in the US is over 1000 STILL, and 11 in the UK. Come the f***ing f*** on. The US is absolutely not remotely close to prepared to have in person sporting events, and they won't be until they get that number down considerably (and that's not even taking state by state data into consideration, there are multiple states with daily death totals multiple times higher than the UK as a whole...) The US is far, far from ready to handle crowds at sporting events.
