Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2020 Posted July 27, 2020 So Borucki and Font to the bullpen Looks like Font will be a one inning reliever whereas Borucki will be a multi-inning guy.
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 27, 2020 Posted July 27, 2020 It's like Montoyo was hired to ruin Giles' career. f***s him up in 2019 and then f***s him up even harder in 2020. Double tap by Charles Buntoyo.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2020 Posted July 27, 2020 Man our bullpen sucks. Just go to Roster Resource and take a look at it. It's astonishing. https://www.fangraphs.com/roster-resource/depth-charts/blue-jays

I guess Dolis still could be good, it's mostly been control issues for him in his two outings, but Yamaguchi just looks like nothing.

It's astonishing. https://www.fangraphs.com/roster-resource/depth-charts/blue-jays It needs to be addressed in the offseason, in a big way. With Giles either hurt or leaving via FA, the 2021 bullpen needs like 3-4 legit arms.

It's hard to say on these guys right now with no real spring training or tuneup. They'll be working out some kinks live. But yeah Yamaguchi does not pass any eyeball tests that's for sure. The 60 game season really sucks for a young team like us. The development of our young hitters could get stunted a bit but it also doesn't give much time to see what we've got with this plethora of fringe MLB pitchers. Some of them could actually be pretty good. 162 games would let us get better looks and lead to less holes heading into 2021.

The 60 game season kind of sucks because we have like 15 fringe pitchers that could actually be guys for us but it will be hard to sort through them all in this short season.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2020 Posted July 27, 2020 (edited) It’s not beyond repair though. Projected Rotation SP1 - Ryu SP 2 - Pearson SP 3 - Shoemaker SP 4 - Roark SP 5 - Anderson SP 6 depth - Thornton Current BP add Hatch, Kay, Borucki, Font, Murphy, Merryweather, SRF and suddenly there’s some variety. Nobody as reliable as Giles, but this BP can work. Romano hopefully emerges as a reliable high leverage guy. Dolis, Font, Yamaguchi, Cole and Gaviglio should not be given high leverage role by default. None of them have earned it. Edited July 27, 2020 by BlueRocky

BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2020 Posted July 27, 2020 I know what I’m watching on Wednesday.

If Bass and Romano can be serviceable as the CL and SU then there could be enough there to fill out the rest. Say Giles makes it back for the final 30 games and then maybe we aren't so bad after all. On the other hand, I have about 0 confidence in Bass and Romano being serviceable as CL and SU though. Even if they are, figuring out who can stick in the pen and who can't among the other guys will lead to some growing pains at the minimum. I think this bullpen is going to be a huge pain in the ass to watch this year.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2020 Posted July 27, 2020 This is the right attitude. But honestly I don’t think it’s going to be as bad as the players are thinking. Apparently they are putting some pretty significant work in and are basically leasing a local gym a couple blocks away for the Blue Jays to exclusively use for the rest of the season.

Dolis, Font, Yamaguchi, Cole and Gaviglio should not be given high leverage role by default. None of them have earned it. You could make a similar apologetic list for every team in baseball. Realistically, teams need 10+ starters over a normal season so guys like Borucki, Kay, Hatch, and Murphy are not really bullpen considerations. They might be for shorter periods but they will either be in the rotation or in the AAA rotation. Merryweather does not exist. SRF is awful. Font might be okay I guess. Romano is completely unproven. Dolis looks like the old MLB Dolis. Yamaguchi is like the Japanese Gaviglio. Not sure why he was brought in. I'm just not seeing it. I almost think they should throw caution to the wind in 2020 though. f*** these junk ballers like Gaviglio and Yamaguchi and Moran. Let's just set Hector Perez, Murphy, and Joey Murray loose in the pen and see what happens.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2020 Posted July 27, 2020 The bullpen sucks. Nobody should be dreaming on failed starters somehow miraculously turning into reliable relievers. This team has exactly one BP arm that isn’t below average. This is a massive hole going forward for this team.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2020 Posted July 27, 2020 (edited) Jamie Campbell @SNETCampbell #BlueJays plan to start Nate Pearson on Wednesday in Washington, per source. Apparently Buck as on the Jeff Blair show and ripped Campbell for this tweet saying he didn't realize Jamie had any connections in the game. Saying that he's been in the game for a long time and know a lot of people and that he hasn't heard Pearson is starting Wednesday. Perhaps those connected with the Jays forgot Grandpa Buck's home phone number and had to mail him a letter advising of this news. I obviously got this 3rd hand because I mean who the f*** would listen to Jeff Blair at any point - but especially when Buck is the guest. Edited July 27, 2020 by Brownie19
TheDragon Verified Member Posted July 28, 2020 Posted July 28, 2020 Thornton is kind of meh as a 5th starter. Anyone else feel like Hatch would do better?
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2020 Posted July 28, 2020 Thornton is kind of meh as a 5th starter. Anyone else feel like Hatch would do better? I like the Hatch/Kay piggyback as 5th starter.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2020 Posted July 28, 2020 (edited) Thornton is kind of meh as a 5th starter. Anyone else feel like Hatch would do better? I'd support the Hatch + Kay piggyback 5th starter idea and bolster the BP with Thornton as a setup guy. Thornton isn't a bad 5th starter, I'm just not sure how to feel about his stuff vs lineups 3 times per game. His stuff seems to really diminish by the second time through the order and really much so by the 3rd time. He also has a herky-jerky delivery with a tendency to tip pitches and get exposed in long outings. While the high spin-rate stuff and uptick in velo has potential to be lights-out in the BP. Romano is the wild card here. What we need to do is bring up big Murph and Joey Murray.
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 28, 2020 Posted July 28, 2020 Not an abnormal increase for a SP pitching in relief. He would likely not have sat 94 if tasked with going 5+ innings.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2020 Posted July 28, 2020 I like the Hatch/Kay piggyback as 5th starter. Agreed. I'd also be fine with a Thornton/Borucki piggyback as the 4th starter. Ryu, Pearson, Shoe as the 1,2,3 and Roark/Anderson has inning eaters available if/when injuries arrive.

I have been wrong once or twice before though....
