Sportsnet live stream from yesterday

KP is a good dude. Watching some of his old catches...his willingness to sacrifice his body was pretty impressive. Watching him running hard into the brick wall at Wrigley was impressive. A lot of guys would have given up on a ball like that.

Ross Atkins trying to get Bryan Reynolds from Ben Cherington:

I don't know much about Bryan Reynolds, but that seems like a steep ask...

Posted (edited)

Just some context on Bryan Reynolds..

Debuted in 2019, played all 3 outfield positions, most games in LF. 25 years old.

He was the Pirates #9 prospect in 2019 and Giants #5 prospect in 2018.

Had a breakout rookie season posting .314/.377/.503, .880 OPS, 132 wRC+

16 HR, 83 R, 68 RBI, 3 SB in 134 games

121 K / 46 BB

Impressive hit tool with some above average raw power, good glove, borderline plus sprint speeds.

89.5mph avg EV, 112.1 max EV, 7% barrel %, 9.4’ launch angle (line drive hitter). He chases a bit so his walk rates aren't that impressive despite the hit tool, but he could get better as he just debuted last season.

Reynolds was over 3 WAR in 2019, projects to be above average, and is their best projected position player.

I don't see much opportunity to pay a fair rate for him in that context. They can certainly have Robertson + Fisher or Teoscar + an actual prospect but I would not deal Kirk or Manoah.

Kirk is untouchable. I wouldn't trade him for Mike Trout.

If you believe he's truly a 130 wRC+ bat than he's worth a lot given he's under control through 2025. If he's more of a 111 wRC+ bat (like Steamers predicts this year), then that price tag is insane.

The package is steep, but it’s mostly speculation. These type of players aren’t usually available especially at this age and far from arbitration. It would certainly bolster the OF position a fair bit, and he can be an impact guy that matches the core contention window. Giving up Kirk or Manoah means we’re dealing from a position with some depth (C + P). But I’d be pleasantly surprised if Atkins can pull it off.

130 wRC+ sustained projections is probably a bit generous, I’m thinking closer to 120~. But in the AL East his HR numbers certainly has a chance to go way up.

On the Jays' part it was probably just tire kicking. They f***ed up the Chris Archer trade so bad, worth seeing if you could steal them of Austin Meadows again.

In hindsight they did - but didn't most think the Pirates dealt a couple of prospects who lost their luster for Archer who was a stud and under control at very team friendly rate?

Rays obviously struck gold, but still.

Yeah, Kirk and Manoah were the ones that struck me as a pretty big overpay. I only really looked at his stats on FG, so I clearly don't have the whole picture of who he is as a player, but it doesn't seem out of the realm of possibilities that he and Teo could put up similar lines, in similar roles in any given year. So yeah, I might move Teo + for him, but not Teo + 2 guys who are actually probably good + a young guy who might end up being a thing...

Yelich was a better player, under control for a lot longer and IMO this package is about the same, or worth more than what the Brewers gave up to get him.

But I couldn't imagine that the Pirates would give up Reynolds without one of Kirk or Manoah on the table.

Toronto has some good prospect depth though. What about Gabriel Moreno? Delete Manoah and swap Moreno for Kirk and I'm pulling the trigger all day every day.

so you wouldn't trade Kirk for one of the top 5 players of all time...and I thought I liked Kirk. I wouldn't worry. The Angels aren't trading Mike Trout for Kirk.

I wouldn't trade Kirk for a teenage Mickey Mantle

I wouldn't trade Kirk for ANYTHING

Give them McGuire along with a cpl solid prospects. Eventually it will come down to Jansen and McGuire in the next short while anyways.

Obviously the Jays wouldn't get Trout for Kirk, because the Angels would need to offer more than just Mike Trout.

Moreno > Kirk

maybe in a universe where everything that is wrong is right

Tough to trade a guy back to a team like that would be with Reese.

I'd definitely trade McGuire if someone thinks he's going to hit at the ML level and become more than a very solid backup catcher...

Trade him while his bat is still hot

Teoscar Hernandez is practically worthless. You don't get good players by trading worthless players with a small kicker.
