In free agency there are no other options that combine what Yoshi would offer: a position player under 30 years old with upside, no demonstrated MLB failure, team control, at a potentially reasonable rate.

This is as close as you can get in free agency:

Addison Russell - 26, 4.118 service time, big off-the-field warts

Jose Peraza - 26, 3.141 service time

Domingo Santana - 27, 4.024 service time, replacement level two seasons in a row

Maikel Franco - 27, 4.157 service time, replacement level over the last three seasons

Ryon Healy - 28, 3.080 service time, sucks

Greg Bird - 27, 4.053 service time, replacement level career and has had 12 surgeries

Yolmer Sanchez - 28, 4.143 service time, one dimensional player already too expensive through arbitration

Guillermo Heredia - 29, 3.054 service time, replacement level

He also fits the roster (team need) and the timeline. It will be egregious if Yoshi is not a Blue Jay this month.

“Egregious” had to google that one.

nice to experience a FA with a deadline.

I might be able to be convinced of a FA signing deadline for all players (can't play till the AS break if you don't sign by date X kind of thing).

I guess Travis Shaw misses this list because he'll turn 30 next season - but I think that in addition to Yoshi - he'd be a great target. I'd love to see a 1 year $5M deal with a team option for year 2 around the $10M mark. Between Shaw, Vlad and Yoshi, I think there's versatility for them to share time at 3rd, 1st, DH and maybe a little OF (yoshi + shaw only)

Reminds me of the darvish saga. Was legit the most fun I had as a blue jays fan up until that point.

We'll know we don't land him when some random dude from New Hampshire says we are...

Looks like it’s down to 3 teams for Tsutsugo.

Yes, Morosi followed up with a story on Yoshi, CWS/Twins/Tigers and Jays the latter as the front runners.

There was an article on mlb.com that listed us as one of the teams in the mix around the time of the original tweet.

On the bright side, it has been 7-8 years since we have heard a "Jays are a front runner for (insert Japanese player)" rumor only to see him sign elsewhere, so at least that trend lives on.

That has to annoy his Japanese club, considering the transfer fee is based on his salary. $2.4M is the end amount they pay now
