You guys are gonna hate me for saying this, but very few top starting pitchers wanna come here (for a variety of different reasons). The only way they'll come to Toronto is if Rogers outbids other teams by quite a bit, which they rarely do.

And thats the truth

Very insightful. Thanks.

Jays are not looking to sign pitchers at 1 WAR projection.

Steam predicts Roark at 1.6 WAR. I will say he ends up 1.1 WAR. So, in sum, he's tepid garbage and I think some of the kids can do better. Hopefully he's our ace (lol) and can be traded once Pearson is ready.

Our rotation is Anderson, Shoemaker and a bunch of rookie or near rookies and you're complaining that we signed an innings water to protect the young arms?

That's a new level of....never mind.

Kole Calhoun Market Taking Shape

By Jeff Todd | December 11, 2019 at 1:48pm CDT

We’ve yet to hear much of anything this winter regarding Kole Calhoun — a reflection both of the primacy of starting pitching on the market and the devaluation of the long ball around the league. The veteran corner outfielder has waited his turn as teams chase higher-priority targets.

Now, it seems some attention is beginning to turn to Calhoun and other possible targets. MLB.com’s Jon Morosi tweets that the Blue Jays, Reds, Brewers, and Marlins all have some level of interest in the 32-year-old.

Calhoun was paid a $1MM buyout by the Angels when his long-time team decided not to pick up his $14MM option. He popped 33 home runs in 2019 and has long been respected as a hard-nosed grinder with a quality glove, but his nice season wasn’t enough to warrant that level of pay even on a one-year deal.

While Calhoun has at times produced well-above-average offensive numbers, his context-adjusted output wasn’t exceptionally productive in 2019. Over 552 plate appearances, he maintained a .232/.325/.467 batting line, good for a 108 wRC+. That was an improvement on his average-ish 2017 and awful 2018 showings with the bat, but hardly an otherworldly effort. Calhoun walked at a career-best 11.1% rate but also went down on strikes at a personal-worst 25.6% clip.

The initial list of potential pursuers doesn’t seem to portend a bidding war. The Fish are biting this year, but don’t seem likely to go wild. They’re also looking at quite a few other options, as are the Reds. The Blue Jays and Brewers both make sense but don’t seem likely to spend past their internal valuations for a player such as Calhoun. Of course, it’s certainly possible that other clubs are in the picture or could join it depending upon outcomes with other segments of the market.

I don't see how adding a non CF OF with a ~100wRC+ bat is something the Jays should do. I mean, "Non CF OF with ~100wRC+ bat" describes at least 15 guys in our system already... Or, y'know, a couple anyway.

You better. It's coming in hot. Unlike any women you've ever dated.

Hey, you started it, meat. Er, mate.

Is he moving forward? He also has a gun of an arm.

This is a whole new part of, I thought so.

So does Teo, and Kole's wRC+ for the past few years:

2014 124

2015 103

2016 117

2017 97

2018 79

2019 108

I just don't see that as an upgrade over our Grichuk/Teo/Gurriel for our corner OFs. And we're likely going to keep Fisher on the roster all year so that's 4 OFs already and no REAL CF (Teo and Grichuk can both play CF passably, but they're certainly not outstanding...)

Huh. Clever. #mate

Wow, Atkins actually said something with some juice that wasn't completely vapid. Pulled back the curtain as much as they ever do.

#BlueJays are looking at outfielders, but not fringe guys.

Atkins: "We'd be very open to adding in CF as long as it's a significant upgrade."

I don't think now is the time to bench Teo after he posted a 142 wRC+ and a 94 mph exit velocity in the 2nd half. I mean, you held him all this time. He has 4 years of control left. I think you can upgrade the OF if you want and Teo can still DH or rotate through or something.

Yeah unless you are getting a clear upgrade in the OF with many years of control left, might as well stick with Hernandez and hope that his post June/post ASB numbers suggest some time of breakout is possible.

With the extra roster spot I fully expect all of Hernandez, Fisher, and Alford to be on the roster when the season begins. I doubt we will see a OF signing. The real position player upgrade will come at 1B, whichever direction they decide to go there (Yoshi, Shaw, whoever).

I wouldn't mind us signing Billy Hamilton (under the condition that he start pounding the ball into the ground again). We're going to have a lot of balls in play next year. Having a truly elite defender out there would likely be beneficial, even if he sucks at the plate.

Jesus Christ no. I'd almost rather forfeit the DH every game than to witness Billy Hamilton pretend to be an MLB hitter. He's so f***ing bad.

He started hitting a lot more balls in the air, and he doesn't have the power for that. When he first came up, he was killing worms and beating them out. If he can get back to that while keeping his improved walk rate the last few years (plus sitting him versus tough lefties), you might get him to 75 or 80 wRC+. Combined with his defense, that would actually have value. Like I said though, with a non-swing-and-miss staff, that defense may be worth a lot more for us than it would be for other teams.

I feel like it's just better to give his potential playing time to guys like Teoscar or Fisher, rather than run some science experiment on 29/30 year old Billy Hamilton to see if he can slapdick his way to 2 WAR again.

Career wRC+ 67 and it just keeps dropping. It was 50 in 2019. Yuck yuck yuck.

I agree, we have enough young talent in the OF. If the FO signs an impact bat OF then fine. But know, we don't need anyone light hitting.

Porcello signed 1 yr with the Mets. Thankful we didn't sign him. Was worried with some of the rumors and BNS and Davidi constantly mentioning his name with Ryu, like we were equally interested in both...

Hey guys, I dont have the time to sift through these forums all day long like some of you do to see if it was BP'ed already.

In the future, if it has already been posted just flag the post and a mod will remove it

It probably took you longer to reply and quote these 2 posts than it would take to scroll past 100 posts like these.
