z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2019 Posted July 30, 2019 Even if he is exposed if not on the 40-man, its not like this guy would be automatically picked in a rule 5, let alone carried all year by a claiming team
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2019 Posted July 30, 2019 If this guy has to be on the 40 man I'm not sure I like this trade at all. What's up with you lately?
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2019 Posted July 30, 2019 Ultimately this is a likely inconsequential move, but one where I just don't see much point. I assume he'll be a shuttle guy next year. I'd rather nab even a wildcard (worse case) like a Maples or a Wick and try to fix them, because the upside is a very good reliever rather than essentially an org guy.
DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2019 Posted July 30, 2019 Gruber's an idiot, don't mind him. We actually agree on something spank man.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2019 Posted July 30, 2019 He shouldn't be a 40 man guy, this is only his 3rd professional season. Shouldn't need to go on the 40 man until 2021. Yeah, 2021 is when he needs to be added.

Guys like Phelps are being sold for cash ATM, cause he has the extra year we snag a BP arm at worst, for 6 years worth of control? Sign me up!
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2019 Posted July 30, 2019 What's up with you lately? Lol I broke my elbow wrist and f***ed up my knee. It's a fine trade. Phelps sucks. Just not sure this Hatch guy is worth a 40 man spot.

To be fair, the scouting report says he has better 'stuff' than most of the Cubs starting pitching prospects. If we can 'fix' the control issues (ones which he didn't have in College), then there might be something there. If not, he's got a shot in the pen to fall back onto.

Yeah, the 'stuff' report is interesting, but doesn't seem to be reflected in the various scouting grades or stats performance (which is really all we have to go on as fans). I don't really know what to make of that. That one report aside, the issue for me is that we seem to have a bunch of Hatch type guys already. I'd like to see us try and nab a guy who can be a legit bullpen arm (a Maples or Wick, or probably a dozen other guys in their system, have that ability if they can be fixed), rather than likely a bubble guy. Wick kinda reminds me of Mayza, and a guy who probably just needs an extended opportunity to settle in.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2019 Posted July 30, 2019 If he hits 96 as a starter, I'm sure we could find a place for him in the pen at the very least.
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2019 Posted July 30, 2019 From BA Thomas Hatch, RHP Age: 24 Hatch was the Cubs’ third-round selection in 2016 out of Oklahoma, where he found success using mainly a two-seamer and a slider. He worked a four-seamer into his mix in 2018 and was hit hard at Double-A Tennessee, where he’s returned in 2019. His changeup, which was below-average last year, still needs to come along for him to remain a starter. If he moves to the bullpen, he’s likely to fit in somewhere in the middle innings.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2019 Posted July 30, 2019 For Phelps, take what we can get. Some nice elements to dream on, even if the whole package is 'meh' right now. I wonder if the two ptbnl from Tampa are going to be pitchers. Would be 5 and counting injected into the system. We need some arms for sure. Yessir!

AintNoThang Verified Member Posted July 31, 2019 Posted July 31, 2019 Yeah, 2021 is when he needs to be added. It says on Fangraphs he's rule 5 eligible in Dec. '19. Doesn't that mean he has to be added?

Sign me up! Six years of control don't mean nothing when the player involved is AAA fodder. Arms like Phelps are best utilized when involved in a package, you get back better value that way. Go change your underwear or do something useful you dumb f***ing slug. Better yet go give Atkins a rim job moron.

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2019 Posted July 31, 2019 Getting anyone with a high probability of being a major leaguer for Phelps seems like a coup to me. Phelps is as fungible as they get.

WryNGinger Verified Member Posted July 31, 2019 Posted July 31, 2019 So we gave up a guy that doesn't matter short term because we suck for a guy that might be ok long term when we might be better. Pretty much what the Jays are supposed to be doing.
