I disagree with this. We accepted a return that's likely below market value well ahead of the deadline. If we had done this deal at the deadline, I'd be comfortable in saying it was the best deal available and be happy about it. If you're going to jump the market, do it having been blown away with an offer. That most certainly didn't happen here. The only valid reason to take that deal now, is if the Mets would otherwise trade Thor and no longer be interested in Stroman if we had waited (it sounds like they may be going for it this year now). Trading guys early who might otherwise get lost in last minute panic (like Sogard) is smart, but don't do so with your valuable chips before the hand is played.

 

TBF it was a difficult situation - because of the breakdown in relationship Stroman pretty much had to be traded at this deadline or the rest of the season he’d be a massive disruption and may even hurt his value if he did something stupid (maybe even got fined / suspended).

 

Atkins obv really likes the 2 pitchers he got. If he waits a few extra days, sure maybe the Yankees etc get desperate and up their offer, but equally maybe the Mets realise that trading prospects is a stupid idea and/or someone like Cleveland decide to trade a starter or two.

I still think the return is light, and I’m not as willing as some to give Atkins leeway because he hasn’t had a very good track record with us.

 

Unfortunately even if Atkins is right to love Woods Richardson, as an 18 year old pitcher there’s as good a chance he’s a bust as he ends up as a frontline starter. IMO I’d have wanted another player in the deal to mitigate some of that risk.

People still think he was re-signing after this? I think that the Jays have handled this the best they could. This was absolutely the time to trade him as his value is only going to go down as he gets closer to free agency. You could argue that maybe they could have gotten more, but Woody is really good.

Stroman is immature and has a terrible attitude. Just the fact he called himself the glue that held things together is laughable. He couldn't even hold his friendship together with his best friend on the team. Hopefully the Mets keep him, or ship him off somewhere even worse.

Marcus wasn't an issue in the club house. He had a problem with management. Yes, Marcus can be a pain in the ass. The last two stars that left in Donaldson and Marcus both had a problem with management. The problem is there a lot more stars with Alpha personalities like Marcus and Donaldson than guys like Trout who are absolute saints all around.

No one is saying Stroman in the clubhouse was anywhere near what Sogard was. Sogard is pretty much the ideal team mate. Still if you read the article, Stroman did a lot for the young pitchers. He even made amends with Sanchez. Stroman's a twot, but I don't think he was a cancer in the clubhouse.

 

I just think about last year if we had maintained good relations with Donaldson and given the injury we could have got a 4 year 90 mil extension. What would this team look like next year with Stroman, Pearson and Shoemaker at the top of the rotation, with Vlad at first, biggio at second, bichette at short, donaldson at third, Gurriel in the outfield and we'd still have money to add. That team clearly might not be enough to get to the playoffs, but depending on how you spend your money it certainly could have been. You wouldn't have had to sacrifice the future, you'd just be short 3 prospects that you received for Donaldson and Stroman. Now we're hoping all the prospects come together for 2022 or 2023 and hope we can attract free agents or trade for regular major league players. Both paths have risk. I'd rather compete than rebuild.
