Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted March 26, 2020 Posted March 26, 2020 Damn... I'm extremely torn on who I want us to pick at #5 I want the Jays to go off the board to watch people lose their minds, like when Groshans was taken.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted March 26, 2020 Posted March 26, 2020 (edited) I want the Jays to go off the board to watch people lose their minds, like when Groshans was taken. It’s likely to happen. This front office seems to put little value in industry consensus and lean towards guys that they like. They love bats with lots of power and potential solid hit tools, and large dudes that throw gas and high spin-rates. Lots of guys fit those profiles in this draft, they have options. Looks like Christian Yelich to me. Yeah Zac Veen’s bat has been comp’d to both Christian Yelich and Cody Bellinger. Massive 6-5, 200 and only 18 years old, serious pop from his swing and he’s athletic, potential to stay at CF. Not that far of a reach at no. 5. Might be a comparable tier of prospect as Jared Kelenic at draft time. Collazo has an article on Zac Veen here: https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/worth-the-wait-zac-veens-star-turn-was-years-in-the-making/ Edited March 26, 2020 by BlueRocky

Best part of the draft, followed closely by the Red Sox taking one of the more "well-known" names that no other team took.

Nooooooo... it's way too early to start tis annual debate again, we might not have a draft for all we know.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted March 26, 2020 Author Posted March 26, 2020 Nooooooo... it's way too early to start tis annual debate again, we might not have a draft for all we know. Exactly. Cause there are so many other sporting things to talk about.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 26, 2020 Posted March 26, 2020 Exactly. Cause there are so many other sporting things to talk about. I'm talking people starting to bring up the draft and relevance of guys liking Lacy over Hancock for example.... yada yada! I like the chat on players posters like, etc...

They take the guy that is slipping according to baseball America and that means that they are smart.

I like the chat on players posters like, etc... The NCAA and high school seasons are done, though, so these discussions are probably more relevant at this time this year than in years past. I'd normally agree with you that it's pretty much a fruitless endeavour to put too much into the rankings when they're so fluid due to games still being played, but that's no longer the case this season and what we know to this point is all the data we'll get. The only things that are likely to influence changes to the draft lists going forward are a change in industry consensus, team preference rumours, and injuries.

There’s been a lot of talk about Bryce Jarvis since he threw the perfect game last month:

I meant to edit this in, thanks friendo. There's no real reason for these guys to slide much in Mocks aside from their last write up. I just hate when guys both bitch after the draft on who you wanted specifically or guys waiting to shoot that thought process straight in the ass without a preference, per se.

Ray Verified Member Posted March 27, 2020 Posted March 27, 2020 This front office has demonstrated that they're more than competent evaluating amateur players. I wouldn't care if they went way off the board to pick someone at #5. What's the one big miss in their tenure? Logan Warmoth in 2017? Every other draft has seen their top picks stock only rise upward (Pearson, Manoah, Groshans, Kloffenstein). Even the time they took JB Woodman in 2016, they were quick to capitalize any value he had and flipped him for Aledmys Diaz. Their major league scouting department could use some work, but their amateur drafting and international free agent signings have been fantastic.

I would put less credence in the draft selection and more in the high performance development team the Jays have put together.

Drafting Bichette, Pearson, Groshans, Manoah 4 consecutive years seems more than just happenstance. They've been consistent in getting at least one high impact guy in each draft. Groshans especially was a big head scratcher on draft night and they deserve props for taking him so highly. Re: High Performance Dept, I may be wrong, but I recall Shapiro doing an interview in early 2016 and stating how archaic our player development/nutrition/training systems were and how they had to get better. Clearly there's been some overhaul since then, and hopefully we get to see the fruit of that labor soon.

Ray Verified Member Posted March 27, 2020 Posted March 27, 2020 TJ Zoinks as well Zeuch has at least made the majors and still has a small percentile probability to become Doug Fister/Mike Fiers. Actually not a terrible outcome for where he was drafted. Warmoth is more or less a lost cause at this point.

BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted April 3, 2020 Posted April 3, 2020 https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/kyle-glaser-free-for-all-chat-4320/ Jeff (Georgia): With a shortened draft, do you see teams making up for the lost picks with a lot more undrafted free agent signings - either college juniors/seniors or international? How do you see that working - a "free for all" with players trying to use multiple teams as leverage to get as close as they can to the $20K max signing bonus? Kyle Glaser: I suspect there will be a lot of undrafted free agent signings, mostly college seniors whose conferences are saying they won't be giving returning seniors any aid and juniors who know they might get squeezed out of playing time next year. What's going to be most interesting is the teams that have already committed to paying their minor leaguers higher salaries (Giants, Cubs, Blue Jays) will likely have an advantage because if everyone is capped at the same bonus, being able to get more money as a minor leaguer will be a separator in which team you choose.

What's stopping a team from paying higher salaries on a case by case basis? Like for the one or two undrafted guys who you think are worth it, offer just them 5 times the normal salary at each level?
