Middle infielders have to have the majority if not all the responsibility in getting out of the way while making the throw. It was always a skill that went along with the rest of their skill sets. It was always part of the game and was never an issue. The Utley slide was dirty. I agree with the runner having to maintain contact with the bag, but if physical contact occurs while doing so, then that's on the infielder.

Grichuk's slide could have been viewed as a roll block, which is illegal and always was. Just time your slide where you won't overslide the bag but still take out the infielder's legs, but stay down.
