Sure. I understand all that. But how often you see a player in tears when they got traded? I can only remember Wayne Gretzky.

I remember Leandro Barbosa crying when he was at the Phoenix Suns (and they were good) and his teammates told him he'd been traded to the Knicks as an April Fools, haha.

It happens every year, hell Wilmer Flores was crying on the field during a game over a rumour of his trade

Wish Pillar well. He could be quality 4th Outfielder for another few years. Expect him to bounce around a little bit.

I know I need to be more precise: I was surprised that he's so affected that he couldn't contain his emotions during a interview.

He was often frustrating to watch at the plate, but he was always all oyt playing defense, diving, hitting the wall, sacrificing his body & health for our team.

Great guy.

Players get emotional via trade, all the time. Especially guys that leave an organization that's all they've ever known.

All you guys that are saying why did we trade him now and not at the deadline, or why did we trade him because we only have one available OF at this exact moment.

1. I trust Atkins knows the market for Pillar.. There is NO guarantee that there is a match or that Pillar's value is higher at the deadline. To make a trade, you need someone with a need and values your player. If SF went out now and filled their OF need, who says any other team wants him at the deadline. If I am doing the risk vs reward analysis.. I am calculating that there is a hela good chance Pillar's value could decline more between now and July.. (Hi Josh Donaldson). A bird in the hand is better than two is the bush. SF has a need and has some value associated with him. Pull the trigger. Great job FO!

2. We have a s*** load of OF and a log jam. True, not today April 2nd, but we do. When Vlad, and Bo, and Biggio gets here or Pompey is green lighted to play, where do Drury, Gurriel, Teo and Mckinley play with Pillar in the mix. I am not even counting Alford.

3. Concur with many here.. what benefit does another few month in AAA do for Alford.

4. Travis should not even be considered in future plans, I hope they feel same.. There is no space for him, he doesn't fit what we are trying to achieve. When he is off the 60, trade or DFA etc..

5. Look to see Smoak moved prior to the deadline if gets off to a good start. Need to start giving Vlad reps there in between 3b and having Tellez, Mckinley and wanting to DH Teoscar..

EDIT TO ADD:

6. Smoak is not the leader on this team. Giles is the leader.. Watch the Montoyo first win video.. We all know about the other incident with Giles. If we can get value for Smoak, pull the mother fnnn trigger... Smoak is not the veteran/player leadership holding this team together.

Prediction...Alford hatred hits the board by June 1st.

That it isn't already here reflects poorly on the board.

Smoak very well might get moved, but we don't really have a 1B other than him. I'd be okay with re-signing him, depending on the terms, unless we get a 1B (Rowdy might work out with the bat, but I have little faith in him becoming decent defensively...)

Its being questioned why trade Pillar now. Certainly plausible there are issues behind the scenes.

I have inside knowledge that Pillar was actually an agent for the Kremlin, and we can't have those guys on the Jays.

There was no reason th keep pillar on this team, and we got something for him, waiting for the deadline would not have gotten any better a return imo.

If you want a laugh go read the facebook comments, fanbase is clueless.

2015-16 were great years for the club. Not surprising that players who were part of it are getting emotional seeing the last remnants of it being disbanded.

Just makes me hate the Royals more if nothing else. We had no business losing that series. Wasted chance at a ring.

Agreed, Smoak is a re-sign candidate.... give Vlad some protection in the lineup

Don't f***ing remind me. That lost pop up with Goins/Bautista might have cost us that series... Plus I will never forget the ridiculous stroke calls in the ninth on Revere and Navarro.

I think some are over reacting..I don't think anyone HATES Pillar, we just know who he is and there was no point keeping him here any longer...

Exactly, plus those in the keep Pillar crowd lost face

Vlad WILL BE our 1b.. . I think everyone agrees, including Vlad that he would play 3b for a bit, until he got too fat, slow etc and he would move to 1b. Well, gaining like 50 pounds kind of moves up that timeline... If the guy is gaining so much weight at age 19/20... He is screwed when he gets a few years older... 1b!

I don't really understand this move. Alford certainly hasn't forced his way up and we don't really have much in the way of outfield depth, especially centerfield.

We got pretty much nothing in return as well. Seems like a pure salary dump where they just gave Pillar to the first tram that would take his salary.

I disagree.

What do you think his ML value is?? A 30 yr old CF with declining D, a career .297 OBP and a high K rate..

The Jays are finally doing what I was hoping would've started a couple of years ago. I'm liking that they're clearing house.

Not sure if this was intentional or not, but it's delightful nonetheless.
