G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 24, 2019 Posted December 24, 2019 (edited) What a complicated F'n deal: The Excel Sports client will reportedly be guaranteed $10.5MM and secure a player option for the 2021 season in addition to a vesting player option for the 2022 campaign. The contract is said to promise Betances a $7.5MM salary in 2020, and his player option is valued at $6MM with a $3MM buyout. However, he’ll have the opportunity to boost the value of that option and the potential 2022 option as well. Specifically, the value of the 2020 option will escalate by $800K when Betances pitches in his 40th game in 2020. It’ll increase by an additional $1MM upon reaching each of 50, 60 and 70 games. As for the second player option, it would vest if Betances exercises the first player option and then appears in 50 games in 2021 — but only at a $1MM base. If Betances appears in 60 games, that base would jump to $2MM (with a $1MM buyout). It’d further increase to $3MM ($1MM buyout) by appearing in 70 games in 2021. G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 24, 2019 Posted December 24, 2019 Carlos Beltran has multiple incentive-based player contracts to deal with all of a sudden. That can't be pleasant, especially for a first year manager.

Sam Haggardy DFA So that 3rd year is worth a max 3 million and only vests if he plays 50 games. He probably only exercises it if he falls off a cliff performance wise
EMK19 Verified Member Posted December 24, 2019 Posted December 24, 2019 If Diaz, Familia and Betances are all somehow magically able to regain their past forms at the same time, and Lugo continues as he has, then that’d be a killer ‘pen for sure... Big if though.

Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted December 26, 2019 Posted December 26, 2019 Eddie going to CWS. Which I think I like because I have a feeling we're sniffing around the remaining outfield bats and this move possibly eliminates a suitor. Kinda glad that EE is signing elsewhere. I'm really not a fan of DH only guys. Yes, you can stick him at 1B but he's not good there.
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 26, 2019 Posted December 26, 2019 I would have taken Edwin at that price but I understand the team passing. They can probably get a player of similar use for notably less than $12M I mean Calhoun’s deal is a lower AAV and he’s a better player. Theoretically Toronto for $12M in AAV could get a bat and a good reliever or even two decent relievers
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted December 26, 2019 Posted December 26, 2019 I'd love Edwin for that kind of money, he is one of the few guys I think would be worth bringing aboard for his mentoring ability on top of the quality bat. I shudder to think back to the veteran presence garbage waste of roster spots prior Jays teams had employed. Guys like Mark Derosa and Omar Vizquel, guys who were too old and broken down to add any actual value on the field. But with Edwin it would be different, he shares so many similarities with Vladdy Jr. it's crazy. Poor defensive 3rd baseman, eventually had to move to 1st base/DH, high walk rate/low k rate etc. etc. Having Edwin around to mentor the latin players (Teoscar, Gurriel, Vladdy Jr.) as well as the rest of the youngsters would be huge.

I generally agree but I don't think Toronto would care about Vlad being mentored by a guy who, uh, couldn't handle third base. Kind of the opposite of what they would want.

Obviously I'm not advocating that Vladdy Jr. learn how to not play 3rd base from Edwin, but Edwin would likely be a huge resource in helping Vladdy with his pre-game and at bat preparation. I recall Edwin has taught others how to effectively watch film to fully prepare for their at-bats, he would sort of serve as a bit of a player coach in that regard.

Ray Verified Member Posted December 26, 2019 Posted December 26, 2019 Potential White Sox lineup for next season: 1. Nick Madrigal 2. Yoan Moncada 3. Eloy Jimenez 4. Edwin Encarnacion 5. Jose Abreu 6. Yasmani Grandal 7. Luis Robert 8. Tim Anderson 9. Nomar Mazara Mazara isn't that good, but having him in the 9th spot isn't bad.

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2019 Posted December 28, 2019 Damn, that's a great pickup, "IF" he stays healthy. That's something he's never been able to do and his defense makes him almost replacement level. I'm happy to roll with our internal options at that price.

Who even knows what his defense looks like going forward though, he's only one season removed from an absolute monster gold glove level season. There is certainly potential there for at least solid left field play.
