He's already made over 80M in his 7+ year career so far thanks to arbitration and just one free agent year

That's chump change for star MLB players. I'm thinking Josh will get at minimum a 3-4 year deal worth around $20 million or more per season. He's gonna be living like a rock star.

Most "rock stars" haven't made $80M in their careers. That's like, upper echelon (and more pop stars than rock stars in that case...)

1978-93 Brewers look like the logo/colouring/packaging of an old ice cream bar from the 90s (can't remember the name).

It’ll be interesting to see what kind of offers EE gets.

Does the 5M count towards paroll for luxury tax purposes?

Yes, it's in the contract and against payroll. Same for us with Tulo.

You could go to 2012 on from most teams and come up with similar numbers, I don't get the exercise to be fair. Save for MLB allocated money.

It's moreso about the fact that they've been rebuilding for a long time now and don't have much to show for it talent wise. They don't necessarily have that young, cheap, controllable core like the Cubs and Astros had during their World Series runs. Nola is great, Hoskins is meh. Odubel, Nick Williams, Franco, Vince Velasquez, Pivetta, Andrew Knapp all suck. We'll see what happens with Kingery, Hasely, and Eflin, but they're likely not going to be franchise players. The true core of that team are high priced free agents/older acquisitions like Harper, McCutchen, Realmuto (final year of arbitration), Segura (close to $50M left on that contract). They've shoehorned themselves a little financially. They don't even have a great farm system either, so if they want to truly compete, they're going to have to spend even more money going forward.

The Twins started rebuilding around the same time as the Phillies did in 2012. They're sitting pretty with a great young core. Polanco, Rosario, Kepler, Berrios, Buxton, Sano. They've been to the playoffs twice already since then and are in a great financial position going forward. NL East is a harder division for sure, but the Twins are inherently a better built team for the long term.

The Cubs started this heavy rebuild trend. It's interesting that after one WS win they havent had a ton of sucess.

Astros and Twins followed suit and it seems they may have more sustainable success. Astros have already done it. Twins seem on the verge.

Yes it counts as it’s guaranteed money, but I’m not sure if it’s averaged out over the length of the contract for luxury tax purposes (just like a signing bonus) or they take the hit next year.

I see what you're saying now, I thought spects in isolation, they could've traded better, etc, too. Odubel doesn't suck, I'll agree with the rest for the most part.

Letting Edwin go was their only easy way to make room on the payroll to help bolster their starting rotation. Makes sense. They were never going to pick up the option and they knew it from the day they acquired him.

Yeah and they are also freeing up about $35m from free agents. I’m not sure that they’ll offer enough to get Cole (they still have a high payroll and some of those free agents need to be replaced), but wouldn’t be surprised to see them get Strasburg if he opts out.

EE would be a nice fit at DH back here in Toronto. I doubt he costs more than 10-12 million on a 1-year deal. Could be a nice influence on Vladdy Jr and some of the other young hitters as well.

No, he is not enough of an upgrade over Rowdy Tellez.

EE posted a 2.5 WAR this past season. Tellez was at 0.1 WAR. That's a huge upgrade. In terms of cost, EE would be great value on a 1-year deal.

Rebuilding teams don't usually sign 15m+ vets on 1 year deals. EE has little to no trade value, unless he's coming here super cheap.

EE was 1 WAR the year before. Which one do you get?

we're not rebuilding any more. We have been rebuilt. The core is here. It's time to SPEND (not that I would advocate giving more than like 11M to Edwin)

Ok, well EE doesn't move the needle on this team, not even close. Next year is a wash again. I just don't see why the team would do that given they just finished 28 games under .500. If EE was 6 years younger and you were going for multi years ok. Just doesn't make sense if you know there's a slim chance to be competitive next year.

Posted
If you're a .500 team, and you expect breakout seasons from your core, and you are tinkering around with an extra DH, then I could understand. Just makes 0 sense for this club right now. Go for guys with trade value at the deadline at least that you can flip.

Would Edwin come back after the mess when he left?

I have some bad news for you.....

The Athletic wrote an article breaking down each teams needs and Baltimore made me laugh.

____

Baltimore Orioles

2019 finish: 54-108 (.333), 5th place

2019 3rd-order winning pct.: .363

Realistic 2020 objective: Securing another top-five draft pick in 2021

Free Agents: DH Mark Trumbo

Biggest Need: A reason to watch

The Orioles’ front office isn’t trying to win major-league games right now. That’s one reason they’ll be looking to trade their best everyday player from this past season, infielder Jonathan Villar, who is heading into his walk year. Their goal remains acquiring and developing young talent for a team most likely to coalesce in the middle of the coming decade. However, they should make some effort this offseason to acquire a player, or players, who, while unlikely to be part of a winning Orioles team, would at least provide some sort of entertainment or nostalgia value for fans in the region.

Targets: OF Yasiel Puig, OF Adam Jones, LHP Cole Hamels, 2B Jonathan Schoop, OF Hunter Pence, RHP Félix Hernández, C/1B Stephen Vogt

How many more years does Brodie VW get if they miss the playoffs again next year?

That's a tough divison with only one bad team and the Mets have huge holes.

They hired him because he was the only candidate who wanted to go for it rather than rebuild.

MLBTR:

Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman is pursuing an extension but otherwise plans to utilize the opt-out clause in his five-year contract, per MLB Network’s Jon Heyman

Chapman, 32 in February, has two years and $30MM remaining on the five-year, $86MM pact he inked prior to the 2017 season. In the event that an extension isn’t reached, the Yankees will surely issue him a $17.8MM qualifying offer, which he’ll reject in order to head into free agency.

Amazing that some people here believe the Jays to be in this same situation. If we keep "rebuilding" for the next 3-5 years then we will not have Vlad and Bo for any substantial amount of time during the next window. The time is now to move into the next gear
