Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted October 25, 2019 Posted October 25, 2019 I honestly don't expect anything to come of this. This is a CBA issue, the players made the deal if they don't like it they'll need to make better deals. I'm not so sure they even care to because cases like Bryant are extremely rare. Even when Vlad came up he didn't do anything special. Yes, but any agreements / commitments between management and players made subsequent to the CBA takes precedence. Maybe Bryant has evidence the Cubs reneged on such an agreement.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted October 28, 2019 Posted October 28, 2019 About time. I was actually a fan of his at one time. But you can't lose your two biggest trades so badly and not have your job on the line. Pirates fans watching Cole, Glasnow, Meadows and Morton in the playoffs was the last straw. Then there is the whole militarizing your minor league roster.

But you can't lose your two biggest trades so badly and not have your job on the line. Pirates fans watching Cole, Glasnow, Meadows and Morton in the playoffs was the last straw. Then there is the whole militarizing your minor league roster. That FO had a very good run. Coonelly, Huntington, Hurdle, and even pitching coach Ray Searage all helped build the Pirates into an NL combination of the A's and Rays—player development, international signings, resource allocation, and then also pioneers in shifting, pitch design, and sequencing. The three years in a row they made the postseason, they averaged well over 90 wins. They fell off largely because of payroll limitations. MLBTR made an interesting point about the Archer trade... Of course, the very fact that Archer is so affordable could very well be what prompted him to hold such appeal to Huntington and his staff in the first place. Pirates ownership has only thrice green-lighted a payroll north of $90MM, constantly leaving the front office scrambling to find bargains and patch together rosters with rebound candidates and the leftovers of the free-agent market. Without the type of annual payroll constraints they face, perhaps Huntington & Co. wouldn’t have been so drawn to Archer in the first place. There’s no way to know for sure, however, and the end result still speaks loudest of all. Certainly not as bad a FO as the results would suggest. Edited October 30, 2019 by Beans

Certainly not as bad a FO as the results would suggest. As I said I was once a fan. However, no one wanted to play with them. They had zero ability to negotiate a team friendly contract because they treated people terrible. The number of former Pirates who have talked about how much happier they were to be moved says something.

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted October 30, 2019 Posted October 30, 2019 Best logo in pro sports. FTFY f***ing pumped that they are going back to it full time. Gonna get me another hat. Brewers unis are top 3 or 4 for me solely because they have such an awesome logo. E: although, idk. I know the baseball in the old logo is completely wrong but there's something about it I prefer to the double stitching. I also am not a big fan of the switch to navy. Still, it owns the M and wheat stalk.

Ray Verified Member Posted October 31, 2019 Posted October 31, 2019 The Phillies have had a tirefire of a rebuild. Their drafting since their rebuild has started has been absolutely horrendous. 2012: -1.6 WAR from drafted players 2013: 1.8 WAR from drafted players, the bulk of which is from JP Crawford who they traded for Jean Segura. 2014: 23.5 WAR, 19.6 from Nola and the rest from Hoskins. Top heavy draft. Nola is great, but Hoskins future value is limited due to his defense 2015: 1.6 WAR from Scott Kingery. That's it. Drafted Cornelius Randolph with their 10th overall pick who turned out to be a complete bust. 2016: -0.3 WAR total from all draftees, all from Cole Irvin. Wasted a #1 pick on Mickey Moniak who is turning into one of the bigger busts in draft history. 2017: 1.7 WAR from Adam Hasely who looks pretty decent. Spencer Howard can also be good. On top of that, their committed payroll for next season is already $171M and $190M counted towards the luxury tax. They still have big holes at 3B and at least 2 SP's.

You could go to 2012 on from most teams and come up with similar numbers, I don't get the exercise to be fair. Save for MLB allocated money.
