BTS Community Moderator Posted July 19, 2019 Posted July 19, 2019 They ended up giving that $5M to Grichuk this season to front load his deal, so they’re actually not saving anything. Sure they are: they're saving the 5M that they'd be paying Pillar if they had kept him. If the team with like 70M or whatever in salary expenditures had to move 5M out to give Grichuk 5M, we're in real trouble here.

I mean, they took that money and used it on an asset they liked more, so while they didn't "save" it in the sense that it's sitting there waiting to be used, they saved it in the sense that it was available to be used elsewhere and was.

I think it was more about getting as much as you can for a 30 year-old declining CF with no consequence on our future competitive team. As much as a trashfire this OF has been, it's still better to see if literally any of the younger OF we did have at the time could end up breaking out with more major league league playing time. Looks a little bad now, but I don't think many people really complained about the Pillar trade at the time. The saved money might've been an added bonus, but I don't think it was the main incentive.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 19, 2019 Posted July 19, 2019 I still think Pillar was moved to save 5M and not to give those guys a chance to play. We had and continue to have whatever the opposite of an OF logjam is. I'm pretty sure our OF is sub-replacement level for the season. I mean - so what? If our OF had combined for 3 WAR this season...would it matter? The reality is - there's a decent change that Alford, McKinney, Teo, Davis and even Gurriel all useless players. The playing time that's opened up in the OF actually let us find out that Gurriel might be a player.....maybe a really good player. We extended Grichuk, so we knew he was playing everyday. If Pillar was still in CF everyday...would there be enough time to get an extended look at McKinney, Teo and Gurriel in LF? Save $5M and get an extended look at all those guys this year v. paying Pillar $5M to put up 0.5 to 1 WAR in the OF....I'm all for the former.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted July 19, 2019 Posted July 19, 2019 Keep in mind that Jim believes that Pillar is currently a worse player than Alford, McKinney, and Teoscar Hernandez, so his ability to evaluate mediocre OF talent would seem to be highly suspect. never said that.... and if i did it was with caveat(s)
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted July 19, 2019 Posted July 19, 2019 and your thoughts on Grichuk? Entering his prime. Also with a skill set not susceptible to rapid decline.

You're forgetting that we still have an expensive payroll this year because of Tulo and Martin. You are right that it seems unlikely that $5m couldn't have been found with or without Pillar though.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 19, 2019 Posted July 19, 2019 Angels designate Matt Harvey for assignment MLB career over? Or will he get another shot.

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted July 19, 2019 Posted July 19, 2019 Angels designate Matt Harvey for assignment MLB career over? Or will he get another shot. I'm sure an NL team would give him a look. Mistake for him signing with an AL team. Pirates would be a perfect fit IMO.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 20, 2019 Posted July 20, 2019 (edited) You don’t feel like the team would have had ample time to play those guys if Pillar were here? I mean maybe....but hear me out. We keep Pillar and he plays everyday in CF. Grichuk is playing everyday in RF after being extended.....what if Teo actually hit at the start of the year and took some sort of grasp of the LF spot and say Davis (or McKinney, or Alford...someone) stepped up and was playing really well as our 4th OF. Gurriel gets sent down because he can't throw to 1st. He posts a 95 wRC+ in AAA......would he have gotten a shot to play LF in the majors? How awful would that have been? All so Pillar can give us 0.5 to 1 WAR? I mean even right now...we've discovered the Gurriel is probably a player...maybe even a really good player. He's locked into LF and Grichuk's our RFer. If Pillar's here, we wouldn't be getting an extended look at Teo. Now Teo's probably nothing...but he's looked much more comfortable since returning and showing he can play a little CF. Now he's starting to hit a to. I'd rather see what Teo has over the next 50 to 60 games than watch Pillar in CF. Edited July 20, 2019 by Brownie19
BTS Community Moderator Posted July 20, 2019 Posted July 20, 2019 Mike Leake is perfect through 6 on 55 pitches.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted July 20, 2019 Posted July 20, 2019 Mike Leake is perfect through 6 on 55 pitches. It's not a perfect game, but Beede is pitching a beauty too.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted July 20, 2019 Posted July 20, 2019 Tyler Beede is good? for 5 of his last 6 starts, yes
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted July 20, 2019 Posted July 20, 2019 Tyler Beede is good? He had a good game today. 8 innings, 3 hits, 1 walk, 5 k's, 89 pitches. Pulled for a pinch hitter now (stupid NL).
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted July 20, 2019 Posted July 20, 2019 Apparently the Mets and Giants didn't get enough last night.

jaysguy44 Old-Timey Member Posted July 20, 2019 Posted July 20, 2019 Hear that for star lefty Matthew Boyd the Tigers at least in some cases are asking teams for an established young MLB star — not just prospects. Don’t think they get it but know: It’s a sellers market, Boyd has big K/BB rate (6.67, tops in AL) and 3 more years before free agency Someone teach me how to post the tweet properly lol
