I like the new economic climate of MLB. With players not getting outrageous FA deals, it seems like they're more likely to re-up with their own teams, and IMO that's better for everyone, and certainly for the fans. It's not like league average players getting 80M dollar contracts that ran until they were 35 is necessarily the best version of MLB. If the new reality is mega-deals for star players, reasonable short-term deals for good players, and more money to young players (still has to happen), baseball is probably a lot better off.

Yup. I like young players getting guaranteed money at years 0-6 at the expense of 1 or 2 of their free agent years. Seems like a reasonable trade off. Now as you said if they start to pay players better early in their careers, then the good players will still get extensions, and the elite players will still get insane contracts, but the younger developing talent will be better compensated for their early years.

Really the only players that get screwed are the older/replacement level types, but that was going to happen regardless with smarter front offices.

17. Which city would you like to see add an expansion team?

Adding a couple of expansion teams would seem to be a relatively easy fix to the issue of mid tier players worrying about not getting a new contract. It’d create 52+ MLB jobs straight away.

15. City you most enjoy visiting on road trips?

Runners-up: Seattle (18.9%), San Diego (16%), New York (7.1%)

Also receiving multiple votes: Boston, San Francisco, Toronto, Denver, Miami, Los Angeles, Anaheim, Baltimore, Milwaukee, Phoenix, Pittsburgh

In their own words:

On Chicago:

“It’s a good town for restaurants — and with all the day games, you can go out to lots of restaurants.”

On Seattle:

“I can’t even explain why, there’s just something about Seattle that I love.”

On Toronto:

“Most diverse city in the world, over 200 cultures represented and very friendly.”

16. City you least enjoy visiting on road trips?

Top result: Cincinnati (21%)

Runners-up: Oakland (17.2%), New York (12.7%), Cleveland (7.6%), Detroit (7.6%)

Also receiving multiple votes: Tampa Bay, Milwaukee, San Francisco, Kansas City, Miami, Denver, Anaheim, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles

In their own words:

On San Francisco:

“It’s too damn cold.”

On Kansas City:

“Just not much to do there.”

On Chicago:

“When I say Chicago, I mean the White Sox. Chicago as a city is fine, the Cubs are fine.”

17. Which city would you like to see add an expansion team?

Top result: Las Vegas (21.4%)

Runners-up: Montreal (20%), Nashville (18.6%), Portland (15.2%), Charlotte (12.4%)

Also receiving multiple votes: Indianapolis, New Orleans, Oklahoma City, Orlando, Austin, San Antonio, Santo Domingo, Vancouver

In their own words:

On Montreal:

“It would be sick, bringing baseball back there. Canada is sick.”“I think adding another Canadian team would be good for baseball. I know when baseball went back to Montreal a few years ago, the reception was very good. I’d think the fan base there would support baseball better this time around and give the Jays a good, natural rival.”

Notes: Also receiving one vote: Australia, which is not a city.

Nice.

Fernando Tatis Jr. has made the Padres' Opening Day roster.

In a time when service time is being universally manipulated to gain additional team control on the top prospects in the game, we've got A.J. Preller here flailing his arms wildly and telling common sense to go f*** itself. Well done, A.J.!

Came here to post this. This will be applauded by fans/media, but it’s going to do real damage to a team that typically operates on a tight budget. I’d be pissed if Shatkins carried Vlad to start the season.

Yeah I'm mixed about that. Glad for Tatis that he made it, but seems like a dumb move by the Padres.

The system is broken and needs to be fixed, but the Jays are doing the more sensible thing here.

The Padres going all in it seems lol. I'm not mad as a fan of the sport to watch a talented rookie like him play in the big leagues if he's ready, but this is a terrible decision from a business perspective.

It's not like Tatis was tearing the cover off the ball in spring training (.761 OPS). This is just dumb.

But if he struggles they can just send him down and weasel their way back into an extra year of service time anyway.

He'd have to absolutely crater for sending him down to not be a disaster PR move

I mean yeah. If he's anything better than replacement level he's going to stick.

Tatis is overrated. He's going to K at like 25% with less power than the hype expects, and the SB won't be there.

Anthony: Tatis Jr. break camp with the big club…or a few weeks, OR months in AAA? I know you can’t “know”…but curious as to what you’re thinking.

4:32

Brad Johnson: Definitely not breaking camp. I went to a Padres game last Friday and watched him scamper around the bases after reaching twice on infield hits

4:32

Brad Johnson: He’s extremely talented but also overmatched by Triple-A Rockies pitchers

This is the quality content I read Fangraphs chats for.

The next CBA will probably change the current service time manipulation issues.

Yup. As soon as the Jays start doing it it changes. Like when AA bought a couple of pending UFAs to get the comp picks... That got squashed in short order too.

More like 40% in this case.
