Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted March 14, 2019 Posted March 14, 2019 That's actually such a stupid deal for the White Sox. You're paying Eloy like he's already Giancarlo Stanton, guaranteed. And for what? So you can call him up right away? He has no leverage. I've long advocated offering an extension of this length to Vlad, but it would have to be $75M... $100M is just whack.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted March 14, 2019 Posted March 14, 2019 I don't know if there's a more majestic home run hitter in MLB than this guy. Good lord, that's a thing of beauty.

I'm guessing there is some options at the end of this. It's the same number I talked about for Vlad. Betts (who wasn't a Super 2) getting $10.5M in Arb1 and $20M going into Arb 2 sets a new precedent. Earning $60-65M pre free agency is going to become the "star" norm. Also saves those years of dealing with saving service time, dealing with the headaches of arbitration. Without extensions it's a $20M overpay probably. Edited March 14, 2019 by TheHurl

TheHurl Site Manager Posted March 14, 2019 Posted March 14, 2019 Here’s a good article questioning Eloy rumor: https://www.yahoo.com/sports/theres-report-eloy-jimenez-white-143530173.html This guy has some fact issues But here's another thing that makes the idea of an eight-year, $100 million deal a head-scratcher: The whole point of delaying Jimenez's debut until later in April is to get an eighth year of control. Signing Jimenez to an eight-year contract would have him under team control for the same number of years if they didn't sign him to an eight-year contract. Players typically get three years before arbitration kicks in and four years after it kicks in, keeping a homegrown player under team control for seven seasons. So under usual circumstances, an eight-year deal would be mighty beneficial to the team in that they would get an extra year of control and at a potentially great discount. But a player only qualifies for arbitration if he has three or more years of major league service. If Jimenez doesn't accumulate a full year of service time in 2019, he won't have three or more years until after the 2022 season. That's the "extra year" in this whole discussion.

Great pitcher, but the back end of that contract could be very painful.

He builds really good teams but eventually kills them as well. Our timetable fits nicely with this.

There's no guarantee that Eloy will be a star in a few years, but there's also no guarantee that the current rules governing arbitration will still apply after the next CBA. IMO it's good to see a team investing in young talent, and from the White Sox and Eloy's point of view it mitigates uncertainty. Still not sure I'd give a similar deal to Vlad though, imagine how much food he'd buy with a contract like that, haha.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted March 14, 2019 Posted March 14, 2019 there's also no guarantee that the current rules governing arbitration will still apply after the next CBA. It's not going to go more team friendly that much is for sure. I do think this was reactionary to some negative publicity after sending him down. But I still think the final deal is going look different than just a straight 8 year $100M.

At some point they may be paying 66M a year for Price and Sale to be back end starter guys who spend a lot of time on the DL Edited March 15, 2019 by G-Snarls
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2019 Posted March 16, 2019 Sounds kind of bad for Severino, I bet he's out until June. Fri Feb. 15 Yankees general manager Brian Cashman on Friday said that Luis Severino (shoulder) isn't expected to return until May. Advice: It's not a surprise, but Cashman at least providing a rough timetable is helpful. Severino remains shut down after being given a pain-killing injection to combat inflammation in his right rotator cuff. He's expected to resume a throwing program by the middle of next week if all goes well. Severino's upside is unquestioned, but his health status obviously makes him a risky fantasy investment. If Albert Pujols is taking AB’s away from Ohtani when Mike Trout is on your team are you really trying to compete?
