Lol why would he do this to himself?

Makes sense. Dude doesn't really care about winning, and San Diego is awesome.

A team with a top farm system looking to compete within the next 1-2 seasons supplements their young core with a superstar. Sounds like something we should be doing. We have even less money committed than them going forward.

Massive respect to the Padres for going for it. They’re going to be really good soon.

Machado gets $300M 10 years according to Rosenthal.

That’s a hell of a lot better than I thought he would get at this point. And Harper should get more now too.

Doubt it. Preller is a really bad GM so I'm certain he is going to fall on his face.

10/300 is also a good reason. Holy f*** the Padres are dumb.

3B Machado

SS Fernando Tatis Jr

2B Luis Urias

C Francisco Mejia

1B Hosmer

I know Hosmer is overrated and Mejia might not stick at catcher, but that infield is really nice.

That should shut the players up. Interested to see what Preller does from here. Part of me thinks he plays it smart and adds some pieces with 2020 and 2021 in mind...the other part of me thinks he goes 2013 AA.

Now would be the perfect time to trade Stroman to the Padres and get Preller to overpay.

Too bad for them that Hosmer is a waste.

Absolutely head scratcher of a signing. Hated that deal the moment it was announced.

This one is a lot more palatable.

That's next years line-up, great core though.

I don't mind a team spending with the anticipation that their farm will control costs for the next 5 years when the competitive window is opened up. I mean their payroll was under $70M in 2017. Then they threw stupid money at Hosmer and a needless extension to Myers. That's all they have spent on though (and now Machado) (60% of the payroll will be on three players). Like I said it depends on what they do from here. They still aren't competing now and so much of it depends what they do with it...but I don't think this move is as bad as the Hosmer or Myers ones.

I went to a Padres game at the beginning of last season and they were all talking about how they loved Hosmer's leadership abilities and they'd targeted him to help with the expected influx of younger players over the next few years. And if he provided somewhere close to his usual odd year Royals performances they'd be very happy with him.

Even though the contract was an overpay (and looks even worse now) they really wanted him and so they decided to give him an above market value contract. Considering the payroll flexibility from having the majority of the team built on prospects, and how much they wanted him, I can understand why they did it. Even in a worst case scenario where he remains even year Hosmer (i.e. zero WAR a season) the wasted cash shouldn't really harm them too much as the contract is front loaded. Of course if that did happen they'd get a lot of stick for paying $20m a year for veteran presence!

This isn't an attack on you Bob, this is directed at the Padres. But this is one of the dumbest tropes in all of sports. Veteran presents.

I do agree that its importance is overblown, especially by old school sports people. However, I do think clubhouse leadership can help. Pretending it doesn't matter at all is a flaw of analytics IMO. Players are human after all.

For context, they weren't saying that they were only signing him as a leader, but they were saying that it was a big part of why they'd identified him as a target compared to other all star level infielders (as they and many others rated him at the time).

If they really wanted clubhouse leadership, we could've traded them Kendrys Morales.

You're missing the point entirely (unless you're joking of course!) - Morales was not rated as an all star level by the Padres or anyone else.

I really think we should sign Harper for a similar contract, but for $325 million

I'd rather see us go after someone like Rendon or Arenado next offseason, both of which might be better than Harper is anyway. Ozuna would be nice in the OF too.

Of course it isn't AS bad because Machado is actually a good player, but it is still pretty bad.

The irony here being, of course, that Morales and Hosmer provide similar value.

Never thought I'd ever see the Hosmer contract defended on the grounds of vetrin presents

The best part of the 'vetrin presents' argument for Hosmer is that he's apparently a giant *******.

So is the Machado deal good or bad for baseball? I mean a player getting $300m in any sport is huge, but distracts from the real area of concern with MLB (player earnings during years 0-6). I wonder if Manny and Bryce’s impending deal makes the MLBPA pause a bit. Lord knows Tony Clark only cares about free agency.
