Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 23, 2019 Posted January 23, 2019 It's more that they could've done better than Markakis in RF, who drastically overachieved last season. He doesn't really move the needle. Use that $6M towards someone who'll make a difference, like AJ Pollock. I agree with this. Everything went as good as possible last year and he still only posted a 2.6 WAR season. The over/under on WAR this year for Markakis has to be about 1.2
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 23, 2019 Posted January 23, 2019 The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reports that the Giants and Drew Pomeranz have come to terms on a one-year, $1.5 million deal.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 23, 2019 Posted January 23, 2019 per Rotoworld.... Ichiro Suzuki's minor league deal with the Mariners is set to pay him $750,000 if he makes the major league roster, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today. Obviously, Suzuki's return isn't about the money. Most likely, he'll play in the two games in Japan to start the year and then officially call it a career. I'm too lazy to look this up, but are the 2 games in Japan regular season? or spring training?

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 23, 2019 Posted January 23, 2019 They are regular games, including the season opener. That's kinda cool. I guess if he retires after 2 games, he'll only get a proportional amount of his $750,000 contract ($9,260 for what will probably be a couple of at bats).
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted January 23, 2019 Posted January 23, 2019 Travis Snider signs a minor league deal with the D'backs. He played indy ball last year, hitting .290/.374/.463 for the Long Island Ducks.

Slade Old-Timey Member Posted January 23, 2019 Posted January 23, 2019 With 3.5 million in incentives. I would have taken Pomeranz with that deal over Clayton Richards as our 5th starter.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted January 23, 2019 Posted January 23, 2019 I would have taken Pomeranz with that deal over Clayton Richards as our 5th starter. Yeah I thought Shapiro would have been all over Pomeranz due to his days drafting him back with Cleveland. If I'm Pomeranz though, signing with San Fran on a one-year contract to rebuild his value is a lot better than signing with the Jays. Don't have to pitch in the AL East, and get to pitch in a pitcher-friendly ballpark in the NL.

At 2237, the production has to stay pretty high and he needs to stay healthy for quite a few more years. At 35 now, is that likely? No, it's definitely not likely but it is possible. Needs 5 full seasons. Maybe an 8% chance or something like that.

King Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2019 Posted January 24, 2019 According to the Associated Press, Major League Baseball is seeking to increase the DL and option time minimums for players. MLB shifted from a 15-day disabled list to a 10-day disabled list in 2016, as part of baseball's new labor contract, but the league now wants to move it back to 15 after watching teams game the system, particularly in rotating middle relievers and back-end starters. Major League Baseball also wants to require players who are optioned to the minor leagues to remain there for 15 days, rather than the current 10. Per the Associated Press report: "Talks are ongoing and are expected to extend to the eve of spring training, if not beyond."
Ehjays Verified Member Posted January 24, 2019 Posted January 24, 2019 Dan Federico @DanJFederico Hearing rumblings that Major League Baseball has found that the Los Angeles Dodgers are in violation of rules involving the international free agency market. There is word they will get penalized similar to what the Atlanta Braves received a year ago Ho-Lee-s*** Shatkins should be on the horn with the Orioles and see how they can get some of their International Free Agent Money because you know Baltimore wont use it.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2019 Posted January 24, 2019 A.J. Pollock to the Dodgers, because of course he is lol.
Ray Verified Member Posted January 24, 2019 Posted January 24, 2019 In the neighborhood of 5 years $60 million according to Nightengale. Not bad at all for a guy like Pollock. Harper and Boras have gotta be sweating a bit. Cubs, Yankees, and Dodgers are not going to sign him at this point. As unlikely as it still is, I would love if we swooped in on Harper. His market has collapsed.

Too late, part of the remit of Mike Elias their new GM is to revamp their international scouting. Expect them to spend big on international signings this year.
Ray Verified Member Posted January 24, 2019 Posted January 24, 2019 Correction, it's actually 4 years and $50M for Pollock. That's a great deal for the Dodgers. Who's left to sign Harper now? Phillies? Nats? White Sox?

Phillies? Nats? White Sox? Can't tell if it's 4/50 or 4/55 including the 5m buyout on the 5th year. Either way, that's a solid deal. He should put up about 3war if he plays the whole season, way better value and much less risk than paying for a Harper. That's a smart signing, wish the blue jays were in on that and traded pillar.
Sorrow Verified Member Posted January 24, 2019 Posted January 24, 2019 I wonder with Harpers options starting to narrow down if it's more and more likely he returns to Washington. I'd really love Toronto to sign him, 10 years 250M with opt outs after 4 & 7 years. Fills a need, fits our timeline.
