Derek Holland back to SF on a 1 yr, $7M deal.

Blake Parker signs with the Twins. 1 yr, $1.8M (which could go to $3.2M with incentives)

Those both seems like solid value.

I don’t really understand the market valuation of Parker. It seems too low.

33 year old with (somewhat) questionable peripherals last year?

I guess compared to what the rest of the pitching market is getting it seems low.

He's one of BTS' boring pasty favourites

That's the only reason I can think of for you being surprised by his market

I don't think I've ever owned him or posted about him before. But he was elite in 2017, and still serviceable last year, though the results slid a bit. 1.8 is a pretty weak guarantee for him. I definitely would have paid him more than that.

He wasn't good last year and is projected to be poo-poo in 2019

It sounds like Baseball Prospectus will finally usher in the modern era with a revamped version of their site. It's supposedly expected to launch in beta before the season's start.

An excerpt from an article at The Athletic:

It was BP that really helped bring catcher framing to the mainstream, but as lauded as it was at first, Deserved Run Average (DRA), BP’s answer to FIP, never really caught on. Much of this can be explained by the fact that it’s very difficult to navigate BP’s statistics page and organize it in an easily digestible fashion. As someone who uses statistics regularly, I have Baseball-Reference and Fangraphs open at all times. Baseball Prospectus statistics are not used simply because the site is so difficult to navigate.

The folks behind the scenes at BP don’t disagree with this sentiment, and I’ve been told that with new ownership in place, this is at the top of their to-do list. As a former BP employee, this isn’t the first I’ve heard of such claims, but this time the people making the claims are the ones actually using the site on a consistent basis. According to those I’ve spoken to, new ownership is very eager to get a new user interface up and running. BP has already hired people to work on this full-time and the expectation is that at the very least, it will be in open beta by the time the season starts.

Half the battle of popularizing a statistic is getting writers to use it. Marketing is an underrated part of all of this, and it’s likely part of why FanGraphs’ statistics have taken off while BP’s often equally reliable advanced metrics have remained stagnant over the years.

FG succeeds because they made it quick and fairly intuitive for people to find the information they wanted, made it downloadable, and they included basically all information available. I can't even find simple things like pitch velocity on BP, although maybe I'm missing it somewhere.

+ he'd still be arb eligible for the 2020 season. A nice benefit if you're taking a chance on him.

https://blogs.fangraphs.com/steve-stone-has-a-lot-of-opinions-on-pitching/

this was a fun read, the dude is a total dinosaur and is probably wrong about basically everything, but it's still interesting to hear a 71 year old's thoughts on all the new fangled pitching concepts

Steve Stone is 71? Goddamn, he looks good for his age.

E: this is also making me miss Hawk Harrelson :(

White Sox offer to Machado is 7 years/ $175 Million reportedly. Jays should sneak in there and beat that. Move Vladito to 1B and have an allstar lineup when Bichette comes up

That is a total insult of an offer.

Jesus. The Jays need to sign Machado ASAP. You don't even have to move anyone right now. Give Machado his time at SS until you feel like you should move Vlad to 1B. We don't really care about winning this year, so its fine to roll with

1B - Smoak

2B - Gurr, Travis, Drury

SS - Machado

3B - Vladdy

Do all the shifting when Bo eventually comes up.

There's nothing wrong with flexibility. Machado can play 3B and SS, Vlad can play 3B and 1B, Bichette can play 2B and SS.

I'd figure it would be $30 Million a year, but if the White Sox are considered the favorites at that value, we need to at least take a shot at him imo

Why wouldn't the Orioles just come over the top an #BringMannyHome?

The marketing boost would be tremendous. TREMENDOUS!

2019: $40 million

2020: $30 million

2021: $25 million

2022: $25 million

2023: $25 million

2024: $25 million

2025: $20 million

2026: $20 million

8/$210 total. I think that would be a solid offer compared to what the White Sox are serving up. Slightly front loaded should appeal to the player and leaves increased financial flexibility to the Jays in the future.

With that said, I don't think there's a chance Machado would take this deal. But it would still be nice to be in the mix for a high-end free agent for once.

Teams basically never front load deals. That's just something we need to stop pushing.

Wouldn't that kinda make the more sense from a certain perspective? Pay while in the player is in his prime. Once age starts to set in it might be an easier contract to move if the actual dollars left are less of an albatross.
